Artist Norm Breyfogle Passes Away at Age 58

One of the all-time best Batman artists ever, Norm Breyfogle, died today on Monday. He defined Batman in the late 80s and early 90s and was the first to draw Tim Drake as Robin, as well as co-creator of the Ventriloquist and Anarky, among others.

Breyfogle suffered a stroke four years ago and had to retire from professional comics work and he was very much missed by many fans, including this one. When I picture Batman, Breyfogle is one of three portrayals to come to mind (the other two being Jóse Luis García-López and the also sadly gone Jim Aparo). The dynamism and excitement he put into his art was exhilarating and unlike just about anything else I had seen at the time. When he left Batman in the early 90s, a lot of my enthusiasm for the titles went with him, as none of his successors could measure up to the standard Breyfogle had set.

Below are just a few of the many awesome covers from Norm Breyfogle. Feel free to add your own favorite covers or individual panels.

He'll be missed.
