Centenary of Armistice Day
« on: 10 November 2018, 22:54:31 »
One hundred years ago today, on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, the guns fell silent to end the war to end all wars.

62,000 individually hand-knitted poppies have been installed at the Australian War Memorial to commemorate the Australian lives lost in WWI.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.
Incoming fire has the right of way.

The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire.

Always remember that your weapon was built by the lowest bidder.

Lest we forget.

one hundred years ago, the fighting officially ended.

but the dying continued for a while after.  "Lest we forget" comes kind of hollow, because we're humans, prone to making the same dunderheaded blunders over and over again.

but we can hope to remember for a little longer.  remember until tomorrow, and then, tomorrow remember until tomorrow, repeat, repeat, repeat.

 In Flanders Fields
By John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

A great uncle of mine, who I was named after, died October 8, 1918 during the Second Battle of Cambrai. Just a few weeks short of armistice. This time of year always gets to me, thinking of him.

I was looking for a thread on Veterans Day so I guess this is it. Turns out the “Great War” wasn’t the worst we could do to one another thus the change to a general Vets Day. A special hats off to my fellow CIB holders (or equivalents). May the remainder of your days be as fulfilling as thy are peaceful. Never forget the sacrifices made in your stead...
