Directly below the infirmary separated by a deck. Must be where they kept the medicinal brandy as well :D

As amusing as that seems, the truth is that ships can make more water, and constantly do so. Wine? Yeah, no vineyards onboard warships, you've got what you've got until you get back to port.

Before we make fun of the French wine ration, we should remember that the Royal Navy only abolished the daily rum ration of ¹/₈ pint in 1970.

edit: The RNZN even kept the tradition until 1990.

Some old ladies awaiting their final days as a forest of masts, primarily cages, stretch skyward from the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 22 October 1919, with at least six battleships and 14 cages visible. From left are the Iowa, Massachusetts, Indiana, Kearsarge, Kentucky, and Maine.

Here random ship class, the Schichau Class Torpedo Boat.
These ships started out as early Torpedo Boats (Attack Ships) serving the Austro-Hungarian Navy.

Due to budget restraints, the navy oped to use the French Navy's French Jeune École (Young School) of naval strategy. Using 37mm guns and it's primary weapons pair of 356mm Torpedoes as less expensive alternative to big gun Ironclads of the time. Beginning to built in 1885-1891, originally powered by locomotive boilers (i was amused by that.)

Ships would be obsolete and regulated to Minesweepers with some of the ships. The last of the ships would be sunk by scuttle or discarded during Second World War.

This is the Torpedo Boat No. 38 (ex-Kranich) underway (from Wikipedia.)

What's funny is that the Kearsarge would be saved from the scrappers, at least until 1955, and find a second life as a crane ship:

So, updates on the Olympia:

--Full picture of the ship. Basic painting is done, but so much detailing to do.

--Close-up of the superstructure. Thunderbolt and Nighthawk XXI for scale.

--While the turret's lined up centerline right now, both turrets do rotate. Stinger LAM hanging off the tail for scale.

The Revell Olympia was the first ship kit I had ever built (badly). It must have been 45 years ago, and the kit was OLD even then. Actually it was first released in the late 50s. A present from my grandfather. I feel old now...

I suspect the Revell kit would probably fit together better. This one's a "The Lindberg Line" kit, and is 1/240 scale to Revell's 1/232. The pics I've seen of the Revell look a little more accurate and complete.

A lot of the Lindberg kits were a bit compared to the competition of the time. I recall an article in Fine Scale Modeling in which the Lindberg USS Oregon had to get some work correcting it.

As a model builder & a fan of this era of naval architecture, I would love for someone to redo both models in 1/350 scale.

There is a 1/350 Olympia kit in resin (full hull) from Iron Shipwright, and an Oregon in resin (waterline) from YS Masterpieces.

The British ironclad HMS Agincourt, she really was a large lady by the standards of the time, and she was absurdly long lived. Even though she was reduced to a training ship in 1893, she would become a coal hulk and would last until 1960 when she was finally scrapped, having been laid down in 1861.

HMAS Cerberus, Ocean Going Monitor, which is looses terms still exists.
Commissioned in 1871, she was part Queen Victoria's efforts to shore up the British Colonies naval defenses.

The Cerberus was armed with 4 (in two turrets) 10 Inch (18 tons) guns,2 6-pound guns, mix of Gatling guns (I've never head these being on ships before) 1 inch guns to round up it's weapons. She was later made into ammunition store ship in her last years.

She had a quiet life until she was decommissioned and made into a breakwater at Black Water Reef for the yacht club. She there still, however she is sinking more into the sea bed. There grass roots efforts try rescue her, but i don't think they've been successful.

Alright, how about some warship/ship lore . . .

. . . as a kid I read a lot of Clive Cussler books, though I pretty much stopped after Dirk discovered his kids harkening back to the first chronological but not published order- Pacific Vortex. One of the things I liked was how some stories about missing ships got spun out and mystery was invented by some of the weird factors. I still wish a fleet of Phoenician ships had smuggled out the pagan portions of the Alexandria Library.

What weird/mystery lore has accrued about ships that you have come across that would be a adventure hook? And of course, pictures of the ship to get the imagination going?

While trying to find the story of a Royal Navy warship that became a submarine for a few minutes off Madagascar due to a rogue wave, I found this picture . . .

Think any passengers got their money back?
