Big Wholi-bids?

How would you go about replicating the '50s vintage Flying Banana? Something not for a hot LZ, but moving a lot of troop without a SmallCraft doing suborbital hops. Was there nothing better, ever, then the Karnov?

Wouldn't this best be addressed in the design thread?  ???

If you want to stick to VTOLs, go for the St. Christopher series in TRO VA, or the Trireme from 3085 Supplemental.

Yeah, you are going to be looking at super-heavy VTOLs and support rules.

Going slightly a different route, you do have the Koi/Ryo WiGE which can haul 100+ tons- the Ryo for having a bit more armor and a popgun.

If it doesn't need to be a VTOL, a very large chunk of VA is nothing but solutions to your problem, the Koi/Ryu among them. :)

King Karnovs?

Honestly, what isn't better than the Karnov?  Cobra carries things in bulk much better, Ferrets do fast inserts much better.  The Karnov isn't even the best Karnov: You can get the exact same performance for cheaper if one designs a "Mini Karnov" at 21 or 22 tons.  Well, not the exact same; such a Mini-Karnov would have either more carrying capacity (at 21 tons) or higher speed (at 22 tons).

You don’t necessarily need superheavy vehicle rules to replicate these kinds of real-world choppers.  The H-21 only weighed 4 tons empty and had a max takeoff mass of about 7 tons.  Even the world’s largest chopper, the Mi-26, weighs 28 tons and has a max takeoff mass of 56 tons.

But if you want to do considerably better than the Karnov or carry the Mi-26’s payload internally, then you do have to resort to the superheavy rules.

Since you don’t care about combat worthiness, the support vehicle rules offer even more efficiency.

Or just borrow the canon Trireme and St. Christopher, as suggested above.
