Excited for the mongoose gunslinger and the crusader 8L. Both are some of my favorite pieces of art. I’ll be happy if the minis just come close.

I am curious about the decision recently to release variants on existing sculpts; what’s the thought process behind additional sculpts of the same mini verses new sculpts?

I am curious about the decision recently to release variants on existing sculpts; what’s the thought process behind additional sculpts of the same mini verses new sculpts?

There's long been a practice of mixing variants in with completely new builds. Some have taken the route of extra parts in the blister (Banshee), or alternate parts to be purchased separately (3050 omnis), or complete minis (PP Locust and Osts come to mind as being on the odd side). Likewise, there are a number of different reasons variant sculpts are pursued. Some are special packs like the Bounty Hunter, Sword & Dragon, or con releases. When I've worked on the con packs, I've tried to add value by changing pose, working on the overall look, or including parts that could increase the appeal of what might otherwise be seen as just another variant of X. That in itself has ended up generating a few "extra" minis. In other cases, new art or a new variant in print may spike interest in a sculpt that just hasn't held up well (see the first generation of 3055 minis for multiple examples; the Huron Warrior and Battle Hawk got way better sculpts the second time around). For a more recent example, the P-Hawk IIC project ended up being nearly a full resculpt to trim some of the proportions on the earlier PP version and bring it more in line with other minis of similar weight. Still more sculpts can be the result of fan financing getting behind a project that otherwise might not be a prime candidate, or even the LD having something he feels could benefit from an update (the Mongoose for one - for a long time it's been good 'Mech with blah looks). Don't know if that answers your question or not; I'm not privy to every decision, so for many specifics I simply won't know where it stemmed from.

Are there images of this Crusader 8L? I didn't see that on the list before, but you have my attention.

With the -8L Crusader getting a mini how about a -8S version? Because who doesn't want a Crusader with a Heavy Gauss?

Deep Worktroll...but I think you might have meant to post that to a different thread.

As for the release list: Dasher II? Mongoose Gunslinger? Anzu? HAVE YOU BEEN READING MY MIND! I want all of those.

Oh, and I see my precious, the CN11-OD, is on the list as well. Must...have...chop-turion!

I'd rate it as 'not at this time'. I don't think it would be too hard to do, going from either sculpt as a base. Thinking from the -8L, we'd be talking about different arms, then adding the HGR and jump jets to the torso. Certainly could be a fan-finance project that shouldn't be too expensive to undertake, it was just beyond the aim of the -8L project.

Dumb question- has there been a mini done yet (outside the WK one) for the Hanse MBT? I had that tank on the brain a few nights ago and have a plan on how to paint one, but no idea if it's in the works or not.

I not yet. Most DA Vees haven't been made yet because they sell poorly. Contact your favorite sculptor and Speck if you want to finance lol.

I will definitely be putting the -8S in for the next round of fan financing.

Speck, what are the chances we can get out a few more of the 3145 BA designs worked in? The Amazon and Marauder were good starts, but there are many good looking suits of armor to go.
"Well, I do, Marcus, and rule number one of the MAC has always been that the man with the plan leads. If we get shot up, I'm the first one to get my ticket punched. There are no flags in the MAC."

I wonder why so much work is put into the Project Phoenix mechs. Since PP Mechs were made to replace the Unseens how much relevance do they have now that we will get the far superior designs of the Newseens?

Three things:

1: Better is subjective.

2: It seems unwise to assume the Classics are here to stay until after the current legal stuff is resolved.

3: Even if they are here to stay, it's still a known in-universe fact that the majority of them were refitted to the Project Phoenix standard, and the various flavors of Phoenix are how they look from that time onwards. Evolving pre-3060s images don't change this.

What do you mean by "so much work"? If memory serves (which it doesn't always), there have been a total of 2 projects involving PP designs in the past year. One is being fan-financed. The other was for a con pack. The latter was received well enough that the decision was made to move the variant blister to a distribution release. If a 'Mech looks cool and sells well, what's the problem?

Probably more of the art looks like something the dog ate is most cases. I for one can not stand most of the PP art designs, though a few of the minis do look good. Would still rather have the classics though. With the Wasp, Valkyrie and the Phoenix not being part of the legal issue (they were known to HG since they cited products using said designs) I just hope those at least will get used regardless of how the legal issues turn out.

In any event, I just hope IWM starts up the metal for the non Macross designs that will be in the box sets soon. My Shadow Hawks are getting lonely.
