The unit attracted the bulk of Hegemony SLDF personnel obsessed with Combine popular culture: Draconis TV dramas, pop idols, and animation. This became the unit's distinguishing characteristic. Numerous complaints were filed regarding the images of cartoon characters and singers that festooned the regiment's BattleMechs, and though a number of the unit's machines appeared on the covers of specialty magazines, the majority of the Draconis Combine populace regarded the 124th with thinly veiled disgust.
Ironic, considering that House Kurita itself was founded by people who were extreme Otaku of the Japanese culture and were actually pretty poorly regarded by actual native Terran Japanese. There was a Japanese Terran, who had links to a samurai lineage that joined the SLDF as a Gunslinger specifically to cut down the supposed Kuritan samurai, and was quite successful at it.
