My first thought would be to take a knife to the center of an armor panel and really carve it up/damage it, with most of the damage being in the center of the panel. Then take some styrene sheet and cut it just smaller than the panel and glue that over the center of the panel, so the edges of the damage are showing, then paint that sheet a metal color.
