Starter Box Merc Company
« on: 18 February 2020, 12:00:54 »
Hey guys! New player here, and I just finished up my Catalyst starterbox lances. I never got into BT because I didn't much care for the old metal models, but these new ones are great and I'm having a blast with the game so far (playing a mercenary campaign with some friends).

Thanks a lot for the kind words! I've been painting warhammer minis for about 10 years, but these are such a nice change of pace. I can put the time into making each one look nice instead of worrying about painting tons of models for an army.

Thank god. I was worried about that...

I need to bone up on my BT lore to make a proper company backstory. Most of my knowledge comes from the PC games over the years, which don't exactly go out of their way to beat players over the head with fluff.
I'm currently 2 wins and 2 losses in our chaos campaign, with 4/12 mechs destroyed (including my poor battlemaster) and 70 space-bucks in my coffers (a Locust costs 200). Unless I can pull out a win with some good salvage, it will be a swift meatgrind into bankruptcy.
If my ace Awesome pilot Olga Hampton survives the campaign, she'll have the honor of inheriting the next merc company's.

Actually, that is a good story for your next merc company- just like other businesses the majority of the start ups die (in this case, a good chance of it being literal) within the first few years.  So playing through a meatgrinder campaign where the merc unit fails and then plugging the survivors into a new merc band that reforms (and coincidentally dropping the debt b/c the previous leaders are 6 ft under) is a great addition to the details of what you are using.

This quarter marks the start of Ironwinds producing minis from that starter box- they are putting out the Locust, Griffin and Catapult this quarter and per the spokesman will have variant options in the blister.  If you like those you might want to also look at some of the artist's previous work updating or offering alternates like-

Did you get in on the KS?

I bought a cheapo lazy-susan off of amazon, marked off degrees on it, take individual photos, and put a gif together in photoshop.

Thanks! I'll keep my eye open on the Ironwind stuff. I didnt get in on the kickstarter, but the preview pics all look fantastic.
One of my friends recently bought a liquid resin 3d printer and did some test mechs based off the MWO designs that turned out pretty good. That will probobly be my source of robots going forward.

Locust 1E?

Yupp, because the 1V is hot trash!
On the original catalyst model, I also didn't much care for the oversized chin-laser and antennae.
