What if we didn't take 12 critical slots away from quads?

Instead, we make the side torsos extra spacious so that they don't lose out on being able to take equipment (DHS, Endo, Ferro) that would help keep them from falling behind other designs.

Hmm...  Interesting.  I'm not against this, and it's not like it would invalidate too many old designs, either (aside from maybe a design with HGR or AC/20), other than have people wondering why they didn't take advantage of it before.

It's more if anyone who never uses them would accept it.

It does have some interesting implications for Quad Turrets, though.  So that's something that should be of a mind, and possibly addressed.

This would probably require extra tonnage devoted to the internal structure, for balance reasons.

Not really - What are you going to use to take advantage of the space?  MLs that only bear on the side?  HS?

Arguably, the better stability, lateral movement, and hull down options are the bennies gained by losing critical slots.

Arguably, the loss of torso twisting, arm firing, arcs, and punching do not.

Both designs have their ups and downs, I just feel that losing 12 crit slots is an easily avoidable and unnecessary down.

Don't get me started on making a previously Level 3 rule created to implement another Level 3 rule being made a standard rule while the rule it implements is still advanced and the mech designs/art still imply torso twisting is absolutely a capability within the game mechanics through various means....

Meh.  Quads are barely at my groups table, movement options used are rarer still - I'd sacrifice a lot for those 12 crits.
