Overview
The Salacia AquaMech was introduced by Bristol Salvageworks in 3060 as an IndustrialMech for commercial-scale aquaculture. It was built during the height of the Trinity Alliance specifically for export to the Capellan Confederation world of Drozan. It made use of several recent technologies to allow aquaculture operations to be safer and more efficient.
Despite its development for the needs of a single world, it proved to be quite popular all throughout the spinward side of the Inner Sphere and Periphery. Its basic configuration would be extensively modified for use not only in aquatic environments but in other hazardous environments as well.
Capabilities
The primary features of the Salacia revolve around its use in aquaculture. Specifically, the mech was designed for use in kelp harvesting, a large part of Drozan’s bulk food exports.
The main feature for this is, of course, environmental sealing. This sealing is r equired for operations underwater, but proved to be quite useful for other environments as well. Variants of the Salacia have been used in toxic atmospheres, airless environments, and even to operate in the aftermath of industrial accidents.
Kelp strands on Drozan can be hundreds of meters long and a meter thick. The Drozen Sea Cabbage is rich in iron, and its tough central stalk in the past had required a powerful handheld cutting tool to harvest. A combination of a salvage arm on the right arm and a ceramic-bladed circular saw on the left allows the Salacia to harvest these strands effortlessly. A massive cargo bay capable of storing a metric decaton of kelp allows it to harvest for hours at a time.
When developing the Salacia, Bristol met with several experienced harvesting teams. Many of these teams expressed skepticism that the Salacia would be able to operate safely. Many were concerned with what might happen to a pilot during a potential accident. In a first for the company Bristol equipped with Salacia with a full-head ejection system, combined with a cartridge-powered inflation system to float the head to the surface in the event of an incident.
Perhaps the most notable equipment was the use of industrial triple-strength myomer. While standard strength myomer would have allowed the Salacia to operate, the use of triple-strength strands allowed a great deal more ease for it to move items around under water. Indeed, standard procedure documents suggest the use of unpowered "wagons" below the surface so that a harvesting crew can operate uninterrupted for an entire shift.
History
The Salacia proved to be quite popular on Drozan. It use allowed for a jump in efficiency that allowed the bulk foods market to maintain similar profitability to the rapidly growing luxury foodstuff market. By 3067 both agriculture and aquaculture had grown to the point where Drozan was the primary food supplier for a radius of just over 60 light years.
Following its successful use on Drozen other aquaculture operations began to express interest in the design. A half dozen other orders were placed by 3061, though most of these were still within the Capellan Confederation.
By 3063 export restrictions between the Magistracy of Canopus and other star nations were lifted. In addition, Brighton began exploring variants of the Salacia for use in other environments. A test shipment of Salacia variants intended for use in mining arrived for a proof of concept run on Solaris IV in 3067. These efforts were delayed by the onset of the Jihad, though production of the mining variant was in full swing by 3082.
