Lots of nice firepower in some of those ships. Like the Defender a 5/8 Battlecruiser, little light on the firepower but a nice ship.

I like the Defender Class stats, But maybe they should have dumped a lot of the secondary Weapons and added a tad more armor.
I don't set an example for others. I make examples of them.

Its a battlecruiser, the whole idea is to attack attack and than attack again and hope no one shots back with something really powerful. I like the idea of a fast battlecruiser with decent firepower, just don't ask it to slug it out with other big ships. I also really like the Congress D, nothing fancy but decent and logical imo. Also, thanks so much for the break down of the FSN into the various fleets, always a great little tid bit that I enjoy reading about.

Definitely a good read for me.  O0

Questions:

There were 6...now there are 2...were the others destroyed or are they in mothballs still. The fluff does say they have been in and out of mothballs many times.

Do you think they were upgraded? The stats we have may not be the final ones. After all, why stick with standard armour? Also dropships vs dropshuttles...the mass saved could further enhance armour.

The fast Battlecruiser built in the 2360s where some of the more newer SL battle cruisers barley did more then 3/5

On a separate note, I like the idea of the dropshuttle bay. You can protect your cargo inside the warship and you don't have to spend the extra money to carry them out side the ship and the cost multiplayer.

I'm going from memory here (I stayed up late to read through it quickly before bed) but didn't it mention that several were destroyed during the Reunification War? That makes me want to fiddle with the Tentative list to strip out some of the more anachronistic ships and add two or three Defenders in instead.

It's interesting that when it came to first WarShip designs, the Combine was very much "be the best!" whereas the Capellans and the FedSuns both went for "go big or go home."

The AFFS FR had everything that I could want in it. Details of how certain units vanished, like some of the Avalon Hussars regiments that died off in the Age of War; mentions of the names of former units, cores and brigades from the pre-Alexander Davion Federated Suns; background on Tancredi as a Principality capital during the five princes era; details of units by actual number that moved into the SLDF; lists of WarShip quantities broken down by fleets; multiple named WarShips (although I don't think the FSS New Syrtis was given a class?); interesting new WarShip, and fleshing out of the Congress-D, interesting new Brigades in the same vein as the CCAF FR...

It's more interesting than optimal, and therefore better. O0 - Weirdo

It's an actual battlecruiser!

The size of a contemporary Battleship, but sacrifices protection to achieve a 60% increase in thrust.

The FSS New Syrtis is the lead ship of the New Syrtis class.

It is an actual battlecruiser as you define it. Not as the SLDF or Hegemony defined it.

In a time when WarShip design was in its Devonian period.

Thank you - I was hoping that was the case, but I don't like to make assumptions, just in case, as there are ships like the SLS Riga floating around out there (which is actually a Potemkin, not a Riga).

Exactly!

(not just my definition though. It was the Royal Navies one and they created the type)

I think it should be Hotspur, but were stuck with the name now.

Well, nice i could guess close to what the outcome was going to be. Big boat, old and semi-outdate with so few of their numbers so being good unit it won't unbalance in years to come.

Despite everything they (House Davion) did alright, kinda surprised with all the DropShuttle Bays in numerous numbers.  I think only crimes the Defender has against it, that so few were made 6 is way to small of number. Really is, specially if your intergalactic power.  Second one its needs update badly, you've got your only large capital warship representing the flag, at most, running around without dated defenses and old armor.  I least hope replace machine guns with better for point defense.  Even the US Iowa Class was update for service in late Cold War. *shrugs*

But in end, VERY NICE! Thank you you brilliant man/men who designed this wonder for us!!

Given the ship's date of introduction and how/when new tech trickles away from Terra, you shouldn't be all that surprised—especially with that speed. Looking at the stats, this sucker could definitely get in quick, disgorge a Terran Marine ::cough:: Avalon Hussar force and then skedaddle if need be.

Defender vs Du Shi Wang would be an interesting fight. It's a glass hammer vs a tank, with the Du Shi Wang's range advantage countered by the Defender's higher thrust, and potentially heavier DropShips countered by eight times as many 5kt Dropships.

Overall, my money is on the Defender.

Sounds like the Defender would make a good counter to the SOyal as well, just imagine trying to line up a shot against something that fast and nimble?

So how does the art look for the Defender?

Lemme put it this way: You can tell at first glance that it holds a lot more beer than a Cruiser-class. 8)

Is there a proper definition of the various categories of Warships anywhere? All i am aware of is the size-based one in Strategic Operations.
As players, we see units in a completely different light to how they would be viewed in universe: they're not just playing pieces that fight to destruction to achieve victory at any cost in this evening's game session, but instead men and women that represent years of training and investment, and living to fight another day can be viewed more important than a Pyrrhic victory.  -- sillybrit

The Succession Wars are fought over water, ancient machines, and spare parts factories. Control of these elements will lead to final victory and the domination of known space. -- BattleTech Boxed Set, 2nd Edition

Not really, unless you have a old BattleSpace book somewhere, or AT2.  Its not really been defined clearly.  I think its basically, its defined similar to wet-navy ships are.  Cruisers are traditionally fast ships, which can work independent.  Battlecruisers are basically light Battleships, cruiser hulls with Battleship guns.   If anything, the Defender could take on the Black Lion I as well, though it would properly have problems handling Black Lion I's missiles.    I referr to the Black Lion I since its is more numberous in comparison to Dreadnought.  but then again, Defenders were made big numbers either sadly.

Imagine for a moment, a long ship similar in shape to Star Wars' Republic Cruiser that graces the screen for a few moments in Episode One. Now make that larger and deadlier. Add the rounded front with ribbing similar to a Cosmo Navy vessel of Space Battleship Yamato/Starblazers with a protruding tip. At the back, the stern engine block reminds me of the blocky engines seen in the Army of the Southern Cross vessels in Robotech/Super Dimensional Calvary Southern Cross.

In the middle is a squat bridge tower, and right after it appears to be the gravity section that appears to be roundish and spin that connects to the engine block.

Or, it's a cigar with a box on the end.

Either way, the Defender is a fine looking vessel armed with more DAKKA. Sadly, the Golden Lion probably succumb to ramming speed syndrome, but if she did, I hope that her captain had as good of a final line as Captain Matthew "Blunder" Marcus of Exosquad.
