Long ago in this burnt-out galaxy, there was a great and powerful society that spanned the whole of spiral arms and the core.  An enormous empire like none other lead by an emperor more god than man, it succeeded in bringing hundreds of fledging empires both human and alien to a pinnacle never before seen.  Even a war against what many would call hell itself did the empire nearly crack- and it did.
That was 9,000 years ago.  Now all that remains are the eternally feuding human states seeking to capture a throne that few care about, while great alien empires spanning whole galactic arms worm their way into higher positions of power.  Now, these kingdoms- stretched to their limits from wars spanning hundreds of years- are looking to ancient, forbidden technologies of ancient times.  The “progenitor” as they are known, left behind many strange xeno artifacts and devices, which they are desperately trying to understand to gain any edge possible no matter the cost.
This competition revolves around one of the few “alien” players on the galactic scale- if even this can be believed.  “Durak” as he is known, leads a small and highly elite force of nearly every known race on some strange eternal struggle against the reclamation of ancient progenitor artifacts, using weapons and battlemechs that have never been seen and are far more advanced than anything that can be produced in the galaxy today.  Using a force of 3 “clusters” of troops and equipment, “Durak” commands his mixed forces of Drones, vehicles and various battlemechs to capturing and securing progenitor artifacts from an enormous swathe of alien races from his personal warship- a medium sized vessel of strange warp signatures and unknown capability.

The competition is simple- build the warmachines of a highly elite, small force focused on stealth, with at least 3 Drone ‘mechs focused on singular tasks (namely anti-infantry, anti-armor, and a rumored siege walker meant to assault whole cities).  The guidelines are:
  • All ‘mechs are few in number.  Some exist only in the single digits.
  • All machines must mount Nova CEWS.
  • All ‘mechs are clan based in technology, however inner sphere components like compact engines and XL gyros are allowed.
  • Due to structural and resupply issues, endo steel-based structure should be used very sparingly.   Composite and reinforced structures are freely used.
  • Ferro fibrous armor is rarely used, as it can be easily captured and reverse-engineered.  This goes for hardened, ferro-lammelor, and reflective/reactive.
  • All battlemechs must use an active/passive stealth system of some form; Chameleon LPS, Null Sig, and Stealth armor are all allowed/required and should be used in the most efficient way possible.
  • TSM is allowed.
  • Tripods are allowed, despite our limited knowledge.
  • Interface cockpits are allowed, but their affects on elite pilots makes them used very sparingly.  Durak is known to utilize one, however.
  • AES is used heavily due to Null-sig.
  • Laser heat sinks should not be used, as the light emissions make them un-stealthy.
  • Because of Null-sig interference with Artemis IV, NARC beacons are extensively used.
  • Command consoles can take direct/semi-automounus control of drones, and effectively can order them to attack certain targets.
  • Durak’s forces make heavy use of Drone battlemechs, which are “hardened” against ECM due to both shielding technologies and the use of the Nova system, making them immue to ECM affect aside from the Angel system (or 3 interfering guardian/standard ECM systems).  These Drones are also more intelligent than their normal counterparts- their initiative modifier is +3 against instead of +4, and do not automatically go after the closest enemy (but rather, attack what their programming believes is the best target for their mission profile).  Drones will also freely push their heat up to +4 on the heat scale, and will only pull back weapons fire/stealth systems when they suffer modifiers.

Appearing in time for an assault on fortress Benjamin in the Formax system, the "Indefatigable" has so far appeared in only 3 separate, "sister" designs that attempt to mesh battlefield utility with as much damage resistance as possible.  While each varaiant uses some form of stealth-based system integrated into it's armor (seemingly standard for the Reclaimers) the first identified and most basic "Indefatigable" appears to use the least amount of advanced technologies for battlefield performance.

BattleROMs have indicated that the first prototype utilizes a combination of dense, "standard" fusion engine components mated to a compacted gyroscope for increased durability, allowing this design to loose fully a quarter of it's own center torso with the possibility of no loss in combat performance.  More telling however, is the hardiness of the design against internal damage- which has only been drawn up to a heavily reinforced chassis and powerful musculature of unknown capability slathered in as much armor as the chassis can carry.  These facts combined means the most basic "Indefatigable" truly lives up to it's title, as the Benjamin fortress discovered when long-ranged artillery fire was simply ignored by the advancing tide of assault 'mechs and Drones under the backup of orbital fire.

So far, only this unit, and the "sister" units under designation "Indefatigable II" and "Indefatigable III" have been spotted in-field.  With the possibility of only 3 available, the question of whether or not Durak's force relies on mobility appears to be a possibility.

Using ancient recovered plans from Tempest as the elite strike teams moved ever closer to their goals, the Angel was designed based on a rumored early BattleMech design that had undergone a series of upgrades over the years before being completely phased out.  While rare and often unseen on the battlefield, the Angel is capable of living up to its namesake appearing when needed in elemental fury before fading away leaving many to question if it had been there at all.  Most of the weapon systems displayed thus far have been simple in scope and purpose.  An augmented ER PPC with AES married to the Nova CEWS is the key weapon present capable of maintaining exacting accuracy even in the most debilitating electronic warfare conditions.  The XL Engine was considered a necessity to free up space for the twin iATM-6s installed and their four ton payload of ammunition allowing the stretched supply lines of Durak to capitalize on its flexibility.  The real drawback however has been the inability to create a design that could utilize any other internal structure than an endo-composite as the strange and advanced Combat Computer onboard managing the heat of the machine drew upon the composites to better dissipate the massive amounts of heat generated during battle.

For now, the design is considered competent and frightening to face at any range though its resilience leaves much to be desired and only the best snipers of the elite pilot corps are given the right to utilize the machine.

Overview:
The Steel Crab is a heavy automated AI drone meant to hunt down and eliminate
Infantry.

It's manufacturer or origin is unknown as of yet, though it stands to reason there currently is none.


Capabilities:
The Steel Crab follows it's sole purpose with solemn determination.
Anti-Personnel weapons are installed in every body part but the head, covering
all directions.

They are controlled by an advanced targeting system purpose-built for the mech,
which is capable of tracking up to 5 moving targets at high accuracy and create
targeting solutions for groups of targets on the fly.

It's efficiency drops sharply past 300 meters, but the Steel Crab doesn't mount
any direct damage weaponry reaching that far anyways.


Meant to charge into hostile platoons and eviscerate them in the face of return
fire, the Steel Crab is build around a reinforced chassis, with additional
armour plating cavoring important parts of the mech. A modified commercial
grade plating does well to protect the mechs internals from light enemy fire at
low weight, and is cheap and easy to replace even in civilian yards;
A tremendous benefit for a unit built to take punishment. The armour will quickly buckle under high calibre
fire, however, Infantry units rarely carry that sort of firepower.

In case of heavy battle damage, the armour of entire components can be removed
and replaced, however, the modular plating results in a severe hit in mobility.


Due to the singular purpose of the drone, and the very limited threat it poses
to other unit types, the designers opted to forego electronical stealth in
order to allow the installment of weapons to the mechs legs.

To avoid any control interference in the close range brawls this unit often
finds itself in, Additional Communications equipment has been installed in the
drone computer.


Deployment:
Steel Crabs are deployed in pairs and attached to a larger unit to provide
Anti-Personell support, or as ad-hoc automated defensive systems when defending cities. The
drone computer has been programmed to handle civilian traffic to ease the logistics, but is incapable of defending itself in this mode.

If deployed with heavy combat units, Steel Crabs can utilize their toughness to
spot for friendly long ranged units, as well as draw enemy fire due to their
lack of electronic stealth, however this move requires the direct attention of a remote operator.


Variants:
Two Variants of the Steel Crab exist.

The D03b Jump Crab ditches the Modular Armour and Heavy Machine Guns in favour
of 4 Jump Jets.

It hasn't proliferated due to the the drone computer being overtaxed with
landing maneuvers, requiring an operator to take direct control.

The D03a is configured to fight riots and weakly armed insurgents, and replaces
the equipment with vehicle flamers and tear gas launchers. A single pulse laser
provides backup firepower in the case of blockades or armred opposition.

With the success of the Indefatigable as the pinnacle of the Assault class elite forces of Durak, a new mech was required to not only keep pace with the powerful design but to support it as well.  Taking cues for the more successful aspects of both the Steel Crab and the Angel Covert, Illuminated Industries came together with their own top secret design meant to bolster the strike teams ranging further throughout the galaxy.  The appearance borrowed from an ancient snake discovered in a remote section core word of the galaxy dubbed a steel snake.  The Twin Fangs lives up to its namesake capable of quick, sudden strikes and fading away into the background.  Unlike most other powerful designs in service, it lacked a Reinforced Structure utilizing instead a sophisticated electronics array and while the massive design was too heavy and large to utilize the Angel Covert's low to the ground body, it could instead better capitalize on the Indefatigable's TSM allowing to plough through short range combat and engage enemies that were nearly half its weight at matching speeds.  While complaints about the inability to mount a Null Signature system or AES instead of a Targeting Computer are valid, the sturdy reliable design mounts enough firepower to cover any situation opposing infantry, vehicles, snipers, aircraft, light designs, and heavier chassis with equal skill.  More disturbing has been the appearance of models mounting what has been dubbed the zero Gauss consisting of a theoretical design that generates no heat in battle completely masking its signature from enemy sensors.  The design parameters lifted from the Steel Crab give the Twin Fangs a singular focus: High Speed electronic warfare.

Most opponents find the squat, boxy structure to be ugly and unappealing though the infamous interface cockpit means that those who do choose to sacrifice themselves for the state wear the Mech like a second skin.  Currently, the only known examples have been in Durak's personal honor guard though this may change in the coming days.

Here's a lighter version of the Steel Crab. While I liked the "weapons in every direction" approach from a visual and fluff viewpoint, and originally aimed it at around 55 tons, the argument that it's too heavy for it's job holds some water. So, here is a lighter version, not actually losing too much punch in the process, nor armour.

Overview:
The Steel Crab D04 is a lighter version of the D03 automated AI drone.

It's manufacturer or origin is unknown as of yet, though it stands to reason
there currently is none.


Capabilities:
The Steel Crab D04 is an efficiency upgrade of the old D03.
By removing the Pulse Lasers, the Designers were able to lighten the entire
mech my nearly 20%, the remaining ballistic weapons suite was replaced with a
streamlined arsenal of AP Gauss Rifles, four of which now sit in a turret next
to the Plasma Rifle.

They are controlled by an advanced targeting system purpose-built for the mech,
which is capable of generating accurate targeting solutions for every weapon
mount individually.
The raw firepower against Infantry actually increased over the first generation, but all weapons now draw from limited ammunition stores.

Meant to charge into hostile platoons and eviscerate them in the face of return
fire, the Steel Crab is build around a reinforced chassis, with additional
armour plating cavoring important parts of the mech. A modified commercial
grade plating does well to protect the mechs internals from light enemy fire at
low weight, and is cheap and easy to replace even in civilian yards;
A tremendous benefit for a unit built to take punishment. The armour will
quickly buckle under high calibre fire, however, Infantry units rarely carry
that sort of firepower.

In case of heavy battle damage, the armour of entire components can be removed
and replaced, however, the modular plating results in a severe hit in mobility.

Due to the singular purpose of the drone, and the very limited threat it poses
to other unit types, the designers opted to forego electronical stealth in
order to allow the installment of weapons to the mechs legs.

To avoid any control interference in the close range brawls this unit often
finds itself in, Additional Communications equipment has been installed in the
drone computer.


Deployment:
Steel Crabs are deployed in pairs and attached to a larger unit to provide
Anti-Personell support, or as ad-hoc automated defensive systems when defending
cities. The
drone computer has been programmed to handle civilian traffic to ease the
logistics, but is incapable of defending itself in this mode.

If deployed with heavy combat units, Steel Crabs can utilize their toughness to
spot for friendly long ranged units, as well as draw enemy fire due to their
lack of electronic stealth, however this move requires the direct attention of
a remote operator.

well as lacking any plasma weapons.
While being rightfully called fragile, the drone manages to field the same
direct firepower at 60% the weight and an appropriate cut in price, while
boosting the speed by two thirds.
At just half the weight of the Original Steel Crab, the Baby Crab can be used
in more open areas, where it balances it's lack of range and armour with speed
and expendability.
It may be more vulnerable to electronic jamming, but it rarely presents a
worthy target for such efforts in the first place.

A dedicated scout was considered necessary to the search for artifacts and ancient sites of older empires and as such a new design has been seen fleetingly from the shadows.  Operating in a role similar to scouts of more distant times, the Hindrance incorporates the most sophisticated stealth systems possible married to the most powerful sensors available.  Featuring an ungainly appearance with thin legs and arms that look barely functional, the ostrich like design manages to reach incredible speeds normally reserved for swift vehicles or aerospace fighters operating in atmosphere.  The weapons are barely considered functional and seem to be present as an after thought though their low damage is meant only to assist in engaging in the few opponents able to keep pace with the design.  A composite structure was considered to be acceptable despite the weak nature of the alloys as the Hindrance never was meant to be hit in the first place having such happen being a sign of failure of the pilot rather than the machine itself.  The lack of LAMS might be considered a flaw but again it was deemed that the Hindrance was never meant to truly engage any opponents in the first place.  Pilots have quietly discussed the strange use of weapons at all then when they could have been granted better protection and armor though no responses on high are forthcoming.

All those systems also cost a serious amount of crits that a Quad doesn't have available all that often.

Well, Nova CEWS produced it's own ECM, so in effect it's "protected" from its stealth systems.  It also comes with C3 capability, so in essence it not only has direct communication, but a rather heavy amount too.

Infantry drones are also a good idea.  I had forgot to mention that most infantry have voluntary bionics, and equipping them with even something as small as a spotter drone is beneficial.

No, Null Sig does not require any ECM/Nova CWES to work; it only needs it's crits undamaged.  ARAD doesn't go after Null Sig, but I'm not sure how Nova CWES counts towards it- since Nova is a light active probe, C3 and ECM system, a +2 or a +3 would be normal.

Overview:
As locations of potential sites are discovered and artifacts are exhumed, it is
obvious that a specific design would be required for retrival and transport. 
Weighing in at a light weight of 30 tons, the strangle-looking " Retainer" is
one of the last units seen by forces operating on archeological dig sites;
indeed, most information we have comes from post-battle video feeds and
after-reports given by captured personnel.


Apparently built to handle and transport damageable or dangerous materials of
unknown capability (see: The "Cyrene Incident") the Retainer has been built
seemingly from spare parts for the role of item retreval.  The battlemech's
rounded armor hide is capable of dispersing explosive attacks and deflects over
20% of all damage done (indeed, recently rediscovered LBX cluster munitions
have no affect, much ot our dismay) and the body, unrestrained by weaponry and
only carrying a powered 2-ton insulated container, has a very narrow profile
and is easily missed.  The arms and legs especially of note, are unusually
long- with each arm utilizing powerful moymer control systems to aptly use it's
6-fingered hands and it's digitgrade legs capable of extending it's height from
8 meters to over 12.  The addition of 5 jump jet exhaust ports also assists it
in gaining access to better locations and escaping battle when provoked.


Despite it's non-combat angle, the Retainer still carries the advanced C3
system of it's progeny and utilizes a full swath of advanced stealth-based
systems backed by a laser anti-missile system for added defense.  Indeed, the
rounded armor that is capable of bending light around it is what first provoked
our scientists into believing that all stealth systems used are in fact based
around a myriad of nanotechnologic devices- something that of course, is barely
understood by us to this day.


It should be noted that in each use of the Retainer, the pilots of the machines
were not identified on any known alien registry.  The creatures- appearing to
mostly consist of a rounded body surrounded by manipulative tentacles- are of
an unknown race and should be considered very dangerous.

Overview:
Direct Interface Controls have often been associated with fanatics and
fundamentalists, and for good reason.

The technology requires extensive brain surgery and the continued consumption
of drugs, and inevitably leads to death over long due to either critical damage
to the piloted machine, accumulated feedback, depression, or the drugs meant to
prevent all of the aforementioned.

In turn, an Interface cockpit grants the pilot unrivaled control over the
machine, allowing him to intuitively move and aim as if it was his own body,
without any strain or exhaustion normally associated with that.

For those willing to make that ultimate sacrifice for the cause, there's the
ultraman; costing more than a lance of Assault mechs and equipped with
technologies even Duraks forces consider rare and valuable, it is a sign of
dedication indeed.


Capabilities:
The ultraman makes use of the most modern technologies even Duraks force has
available.

Built around a lightweight composite structure and a supercharged engine, the
machine is protected by sixteen and a half ton of interlinked ferro-lamellor
armour with an integrated LPS system.
The armament is what many would consider below average, but the mech is far
tougher and nimbler than it's peers, able to reach flank speeds upwards of 140
kph in short bursts.

The mechs weapon systems are, without exception, highly accurate and generously
supplied with ammunition, allowing the Ultraman to be an unseen terror on the
battlefield far in excess of what it's firepower would suggest.
Two coolant pods allow the pilot to flush in additional cooling fluid should he
feel uncomfortable with the heat levels, and the Interface cockpit and advanced
acuator systems allow the mech to twist and dodge in ways no regular mech nor
human could do.

It has been noted that while the head ejection system will protect the pilots
body in case of a catastrophic hit, his mind is probably going to take some
damage due to the sudden forceful ejection from the machine. Future versions,
if any, will likely not feature this system anymore.


Deployment:
Only a single Batch of Ultramans was produced so far. How that actually is has
yet to be found out.

Issued only to elite soldiers with neural interface Implants, the rare and
elusive mechs are mostly deployed in Duraks personal guard or leading a command
lance with drone support.


Variants:
The only currently known Variant removes the SRM4 backup launcher in favour of
an advanced Case system and shifts the electronics and ammo to make better use
of this advantage.
It is assumed any future version will be built upon this variant.

There are rumors of a downgraded variant utilising standard structure and
armour.

One of the sister units of the "basic" indefatigable, the second version has made some
startling tradeoffs- in exchange for the battlemechs' heavily rienforced structure,
the Indefatigable II uses a combination of strange ballistic-dampening armor coupled
with a massivly powerful magnetic field that somehow stymies particle-based attacks-
a combination that has only been described as "insane".  However, as the defenders of
fortress Benjamin discovered, the coupling of the two systems was all too effective;
Taiidan forces are notoriously relaint on artillery, autocannons and particle weaponry,
and a battlemech that degraded the damages off all the above to less than 50% gives
a very good reason as to why the 33rd Formax Planetary Defense force broke so easily
in face of just one.

The rest of the battlemech is still just as advanced as the last- while one advanced PPC
was replaced by a torso-mounted coilgun of similar power, all the lasers have been exchanged
for a variety that seems to trade range for added accuracy through laser keyholing.
In-depth battleROMs have displayed that the design likely does not use the advanced moymers
of it's progenitor, but it appears that the major actuators have been heavily armored
in case of crippling motive damage.  The addition of powerful heat baffles to delay radar detection
(instead of the light polarization fields we have seen on the drones) leads us to believe that the
system is likely built of two different parts.

Few understand the purpose of the Hyperion; was it a stealth 'mech later repurposed into
a main-line fighter?  Or was is it a basic medium pulling double-duty?  Either way,
the Hyperion is known for one factor- being arguably the most well known and heavily
used battlemechs of Durak's enterouge.

Based on a heavyweight medium chassis, most variants of the Hyperion are capable of frequently
using both stealth systems heavily during combat instead of needing to "juggle" it's different
systems constantly during combat.  The prime is the greatest example- as a battlemech
it's coilgun can keep up incredible rates of fire and it specifially carries a rather heavy
amount of ammunition.  Indeed, the Prime is the most heavily seen, appearing in the 7-mech
teams usually gouped with two other units, several drones, and a heavier commander.

Other variants follow different concepts, mostly based around the use of the AES system in
the right arm.  Most varaints use ballistics to a heavy degree, with only a few variants
using heavy energy wepons or physical attacks to offset any heat generated.  Variants
D, E, and G are openly feared, mostly due to their electic spread- especially the G,
who functions as a heavy battle armor "taxi".  The X varaint is seen underwater where
the stealth systems are massively effective (due to lowered ranges on energy weapons)
while the Z has only been seen where capturing an enemy is seemingly required.

Of note is the final configuration, only seen in Durak's personal guard.  The "Aleph"
configurations, taking their name from Durak's own 'mech, try to ape it's battlefield abilities
as closely as possible.  Though they do not mount the advanced jump systems or TSM of
their commander, basic jump packs and superchargers come close while left-arm mounted
"Phased cannon array" is seemingly just as powerful- and destructive.  It should be noted,
however, that their particle cannons have not tested positive for the heavy radiation
that comes from Durak's cannon, which our scientists state can only come from theoretical
Meson decay.  If so, then the "Aleph" use much more basic reactors and lack all the
"modes" Durak's cannon posesses.

This is a little combination of two past designs I had and work well for the competition.

The Scorned is an odd duck even amongst the one off and elite designs that have graced the battlefield in the last few years.  It is considered by many to be a work of art in appearance and basic functionality along with elegantly getting around the issues of interfacing with a Mech design so thoroughly.  The bypass turned out to be one of specificity as the Scorned was designed to be operated solely by members of the fairer sex with all servos, outward appearances and general layout to match the female form.  Even the electrical lines harken back to a basic engineering and design of the organic body.

The main advantages of the costly and incredibly difficult to produce design are speed combined with accuracy.  The Large Variable Speed Pulse Laser is an older weapon but excels at target acquisition and provides a moderate amount of firepower.  It has been combined with an improved mynomer system in the arm and improved balance for further increased accuracy that is brought to the pinnacle of accuracy thanks to the Interface system.  The Streak LRM-10 grants the Mech the ability to assist in a small amount of long range support as it approaches the target with an over-abundance of ammunition.  The ferro-lamellor armor offers excellent protection despite Durak's desire to keep the majority of his forces using advanced armors to a minimum to prevent the technology from falling into enemy hands.  Internally, the design lacks much of the rigidity and robustness of the exterior, but the Chameleon LPS and high speed of the design is considered to be great enough to easily offset these disadvantages.

Overall, the Mech is not a main battle unit nor is it truly a close range brawler instead acting as a combination heavy scout and hunter-killer.  Only seven have been seen in total and all over them acting in concert with each other though rumors surrounding the design are taken with scepticism as the pilots supposedly leave no survivors.
