HCT-4D Hatchetman - an attempt to address some flaws

Big 'Mechs with big hatchets are cool. What's not cool is being so slow that you can't close to an optimal range to use it without having your paper-thin armour blasted into pieces. My solution: the -4D. Hatchetman by weight and appearance, but at least part Nightsky by it intended usage, it can be a vicious little beast.

At late Succession Wars levels of technology it's effective both at its primary role of flanking enemy Heavy 'Mechs and bonking them from the rear, or else bullying lighter 'Mechs with similar movement profiles who typically won't have the weaponry to easily overwhelm something with 9.5 tons of armour (which rivals the protection of a lot of Heavy 'Mechs of its era!). Bonus: its interactions with infantry units verge on a warcrime.

Honestly though, this lil' guys is a backstabber through and through. I went with Machine Guns for splatter damage rather than an SRM, simply because you're going to be gnawing away at the enemy's back at point blank range whenever possible. Send a couple around the rear of a Fire Support lance and munch on them from the back until you hit a Gyro, or cook off some ammo, or just plain degrade their capacity to provide support by hitting an LRM, then move onto the next and repeat.

I wonder, what a 3062 era version would look like.  Would you put a light or XL engine on, to free up tonnage for more weapons?  Shift any of the mediums to ERs?

Jump Jets.  If you're going to center around melee combat, you have to be able to GET there! :)

I just swapped the AC for a LL. Saved enough weight for 5/8/5 movement and more armor. 3 extra SHS doesn't quite cover the extra heat, thought.

Alternatively, take my original, remove a Medium Laser, a Heat Sink, and either an MG or 1/2 ton of armour and change it to 6/9/5 while retaining intro 'Tech. Will still be able to fire constantly regardless of how you're moving and not build heat.

TSM for harder bonks, Pulse lasers for better accuracy, and a bunch of mixed Small and ER Small lasers to always overheat to exactly +9. An 18-point Bonk in the rear will ruin ANYONE's day.
