Sable LRRV Taurean
« on: 22 January 2019, 11:06:12 »
This grew out of a redesign of the J. Edgar to give it an all-energy loadout and what to do with the ton of weight from the ammunition supply.

Code: [Select]
able  LRRV

Mass: 25 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Motive Type: Hovercraft
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Succession Wars
Tech Rating/Era Availability: D/X-D-D-A

Cruise Speed: 118.8 km/h
Flanking Speed: 183.6 km/h

Armament:
3 Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers
    1  Infantry Bay (1.5 tons)
Manufacturer: Pinard Protectorates Limited
    Primary Factory: Perdition
Communications System: Neil 5000-d
Targeting and Tracking System: TracTex Alpha-1

Overview:
Based on the popular J. Edgar hover tank, the Sable Long Range Recon Vehicle
was designed to be able to travel long distances without need for resupply.
The use of commonly available components allowed the engineers several
shortcuts when designing the vehicle and keeping the overall costs down.   As
an LRRV, the Sable has proven to have a good track record, though the
specialized nature of its role has kept it from replacing cheaper hover APCs on
the battlefield.

Capabilities:
The Sable is designed around the concept of a fast vehicle capable of
deploying a reinforced squad anywhere on the battlefield, support them as a
traditional hover tank, and then extricate them.   To this end, the use of a
more expensive fusion powerplant was mandadted.   The Warner 140 fusion
powerplant was based on existing Warner products with the aim of keeping it
simple and easy enough to be repaired with a minimum of specialized tools.
While this makes the Warner bulkier and heavier than most other fusion
powerplants, 'Techs enjoy being assigned to the vehicle.   Indeed, scout units
often have the pick of the most experienced 'Techs available for just that
reason, in spite of having to work in less than ideal conditions.

The use of a fusion powerplant allowed for the mounting of three Diverse
Optics Type 18 medium lasers in a centrally-mounted turret.   The lasers
provide enough firepower to pose a threat to other light or medium vehicles in
support of the LRRP infantry squad.   Without need for ammunition, the lasers
allow the vehicle to fight far from traditional supply trains, and even 'live
off the land' if needed.   As part of  a lance, Sables can even pose
significant threats to light 'Mechs.

The communications system for the Sable was based on existing components,
but with an increased signal strength and clarity to allow for the vehicle to
keep in contact with friendly forces while deep behind enemy lines.

Deployment:
The Sable has only been seen in Taurean service, where it is concentrated in
long-range scout companies that can be attached to larger units in order to
provide extra intelligence-gathering capabilities.   The LRRP companies can
also be deployed as a quick-response force to counter or at least stall pirate
raiders long enough for heavier forces to be brought to bear.

Variants:
The only major variant seen replaces a single medium laser in order to mount
an enhanced suite of communications gear.   This gear is sensitive enough to
snoop on any communications in-system.   Often, this variant is used as a
command vehicle for an LRRP company in order to keep in direct contact with
regimental commands.

Technically, a 10-trooper Taurian squad only weighs 1 ton, so you could use the other half a ton for Recon Camera in the Turret...

Nice variant overall!

Well, that or an extra half ton of armor.   Extra armor is always a good thing.

My basic idea was a reinforced squad or maybe a jumpjet squad with extra maintenance equipment.   A jumpjet infantry trooper (if I'm reading the relevant table from TechManual pg 239 correctly) takes 1.25 times the space of a leg infantry.   Therefore, an infantry compartment would (roughly) take 1.5 tons for the jumpjet infantry squad vs 1 ton for the leg infantry squad.

Anyone have better numbers/a better read of the table in question?

The table you really want is on page 155, and has been errata'd as follows:
Quote
Conventional Infantry Weight Table (p. 155)
Reduce the listed weights for Foot, Motorized, and Jump Infantry by 0.015 tons, giving values of:
Foot (0.085 tons), Motorized (0.195 tons), Jump (0.165 tons)
If you want anti-'mech capability, you add the 15 kg back.

Thank you for pointing that out.   I'm still trying to work out the actual weight of a given infantry squad and how that maps to the weights listed for infantry platoons in the rules, but that sort of question probably needs to be continued under Rules Questions.
