"What do YOU want?"  The visitor asked the heads of each House and each Periphery nation, until he got an answer his sponsors wanted.

Then, his shadowy allies provided a poisoned gift.  The year, is 3049, the year the Shadows came for us all.

So who´s going to give them Vir Cotto´s answer this time?

The only one I can see with that sort of wisdom, given his experiences, is Anastasius Focht.

The only one I can see with that sort of wisdom, given his experiences, is Anastasius Focht.

Vir wasn't really the wise, experienced character.  He was the everyman, the nebbish, the microscopic cog in the catastrophic plan, Londo's Jiminy Cricket.  That was what made his occasional moments of badassery so effective in the narrative - he was a regular guy who got pushed around until he couldn't take it any more, then pushed back hard.  The Battletech equivalent is a minor character, not a faction leader.  The first guy who comes to mind in the Battletech universe who has the subordinate position and moral authority to deliver that line is Michi Noketsuna before Misery.

In 2990, Maximilian Liao contemplates a coup against his father, Chancellor Tormax Liao. After careful consideration he decides the necessary quick transfer of power to avoid an internal conflict long enough to let the FWLM and AFFS take advantage aren't quite good enough. He will defer action until his position is slightly better.

Less than a year later, in 2991, Tormax Liao judges the developing political balance... and decides that patriotism trumps personal pride. The Chancellor formally abdicates in favour of his son, much to Maximilian's surprise. The younger Liao never expected his father to take such a step and is left wondering if this was pragmatism, cowardice... or familial love... a virtue that in that case he himself lacked.

In this period of uncertainty comes news that Captain-General Stephan Marik has died and Janos Marik now leads the Free Worlds League. The comparatively new Great Lord proclaims a period of consolidation and recovery, as well as preparations to celebrate the coming millennium with great celebrations.

Maximilian cautiously offers Janos a ceasefire until said celebrations, reasoning that the Capellans will probably benefit more than the comparatively stronger League. It's hardly unprecedented - the Liaos and Davions managed decades of truce during the early Third Succession War. While Janos has trouble selling it to the Halas and Humphreys, ultimately he has the prestige of the start of his realm and it's hard not to see that a period of recovery benefits them.

The two heads of state meet to conclude the pact and... to everyone's surprise they get along quite well. It's agreed that they will meet again in 3000 during the millenial year celebrations, with Maximilian ordering similar festivals in his realm. In 2994, Maximilian sends his regrets to Janos on the death of the latter's wife Hilda... and less than three years later, he receives a heartfelt message from Janos when Maximilian himself loses his wife. Correspondence becomes regular... while they clearly have divergent interests and can't afford to fully trust each other, they are... peers. Something that neither has otherwise.

(Anton Marik hates this development).

On 3000, Maximilian visits the Free Worlds League to join celebrations on a border world. Janos then returns with him to attend celebrations on Styk. The two leaders speak extensively and in private, content unfamiliar.

And in January 3001 Janos meets Parliament while Maximilian meets with the House of Scions. The two present figures showing the great benefits the ceasefire has led to, as well as showing crowds cheering and celebrating this period of detente between their realms. They each remind their governments that the Star League was founded by an agreement brokered by Ian Cameron but between House Liao and House Marik to cease their apparently endless warring.

"Are you," they are asked, "Proposing peace with the enemy."

"Peace is the result when one's neighbour is no longer an enemy," they answer word for word the same. And then they present a treaty that would, at a stroke, transform both realms by engaging Candace Liao to Martin Marik, uniting the two dynasties and merging the realms into the Free Worlds Confederation - a treaty with a new constitution drawing from both government models, and with a combined military that can withstand the rapacious Steiners and Davions.

It takes about 48 hours for Anton Marik to rally a rebellion against his brother, which is quick and decisive... in Janos' favour - it might have worked if Anton had been less impatient, for Janos was still riding the wave of popularity of the celebrations, and there was just enough benefits for the major provincial leaders in the proposed treaty (repeal of the Camlann precedent, their assured places on the 'upper house' of the bicameral legislative, etc.) that none of them backed Anton.

Well now, on one hand I wonder how the other Great Houses would react to this and if given the case that the canon FedCom would still be established how they'd in turn react to the FedCom being created ... and the Dragon is standing outside looking into 4 Houses having turned into 2 big ones and wondering who and what his equivalent would've been...  :o 8)

I'm not sure it will be the same level of defeat as the CC saw, because neither power can pull enough troops to take a big bite of it, and leave their backsides open.

DC only friend becomes Comstar, even more then in the canon timeline

The FWC can afford to entertain Katrina's peace offer because they rival the LyrCom industrially.  If they think that given peace on both borders they can restore their infrastructure faster than the LyrCom and FedSuns can integrate worlds taken from the Combine peace might actually break out.

Unless I'm mis-remembering when Katrina's peace proposal was.

As humanity continued to expand outward over the centuries and wage continued war against one another for various reasons, they had no idea that Terra was going to face a new enemy entirely.

In the year 3067, just as the FedCom Civil War came to an end, an event no one saw coming occurred within the Pacific Ocean. A strange portal which would later be known as "the Breach" opened up and unleashed a monstrous creature the likes of which none had ever seen before. This monster, dubbed "Trespasser", made landfall in San Francisco and began to devastate the region. Word of Blake forces launched everything they had at the creature. Tanks, Battlemechs, Aerospace fighters, even Battle Armor went up against it; but by the time they finally managed to kill it, San Francisco was completely destroyed, along with San Diego, and part of Los Angeles. The entire Inner Sphere were stunned that such a creature existed and the citizens of Terra were thankful that it was dead.

But it didn't end there; another one of these "kaiju" appeared in Manilla six months later. Rather than waste their military assets, the Word of Blake used an orbital bombardment to kill the creature from their warships. Despite killing the creature, the bombardment destroyed Manilla and almost the entire island of Luzon. The public outcry was enormous, despite everything the Word of Blake had done against the previous Kaiju. It was a victory, albeit a pyrrhic one.

However, to the shock of the entire Inner Sphere, another Kaiju attacked; but this time, it made landfall on New Avalon. Then others attacked other worlds around the Inner Sphere. By the time these Kaiju were dealt with, it was clear to everyone, even the Clans...that these attacks were not going to stop. More breaches were discovered; but on some of these worlds, an invasion of non-human aliens came through and devastated the human population with their Kaiju monsters.

It was for the first time, since the Amaris Civil War, that all of humanity had come together to discuss how they were going to deal with this new threat. Breaches had also appeared in the Clan homeworlds and the Clans themselves were forced (against their better judgement) to make contact with the Eridani forces on Huntress to meet with the new Star League in a surprising manner.

While 'Mechs were powerful in their own right; the first Kaiju attack had made it clear that even a single 'Mech by itself was no match for one of these Kaiju. So the scientists of humanity decided to built a new kind of 'Mech. One designed to fight off the Kaiju wherever they may appear. Thus, the Jaeger program was born.

The Terran Hegemony constitution does not allow for an under-age Director-General and thus after Simon Cameron's death, his three children are not eligible as successors. A hotly contested election between the two most senior branches provides no clear winner between two candidates - one from Terra but with poor credentials compared to Simon's half-sister who had married into a minor branch of House Davion. Both sides claim fraud over the results, with recounts strongly suggesting that both factions (if not the leaders) have been guilty.

The Star League Council and the SLDF watch in disbelief as the quarrelling breaks into violence and the entire Terran Hegemony seems to be falling into Civil War. Eager to keep the Davions from sending forces to support their candidate (and viewing a weakened Terran Hegemony as beneficial to them), the other lords agree that the SLDF should enforce a blockade against any outside involvement - as far as they can when significant elements of the SLDF are being tempted to interfere on one side or the other.

The SLDF might well have imposed one ruler had the Commanding General been willing to. But Aleksandr Kerensky's tragic flaw was that he had no desire to rule or impose a ruler. And besides that, the Periphery lords saw this great opportunity to regain their freedoms while the Star League was distracted, something pinning down much of the SLDF (those who don't feel defection to join the fighting for the Hegemony is better than suppressing the Territorial states).

And the other Council Lords begin to consider if they can elect a new First Lord from outside House Cameron...

That would make a break-up of the SLDF along that existing Royal-/Non-Royal fracture/faction line very probable and at the same time Civil War may very happen within the (Royal) SLDF units.

A veritable free-for-all conflict looms - and that is just the SLDF.

RWA is still home in the Rim Worlds and Amaris is not factor to consider at that point in time. Nor will the Periphery Uprising happen as in canon.

Yeah, it is more like a reset back to the Age of War period, though, enhanced by a free-for-all in Hegemony space and at the same time in the Periphery.

Only thing is (if iirc) that the Periphery Uprising preparations can simply not be as far advanced as if what they were at one generation later in canon.

A lot of the canon Periphery Uprising resources were provided by Amaris in preparation of the Coup and the Amaris Coup is a non-entity ITL.

If drakensis follows through with this it provides him vast leeway as to the Periphery in general and any Uprisings thereof in particular ITL.

After the Interdict during the 4th SW Hanse orders plans drawn up to use Black Boxes to replace HPG's in the FS in case C* ever does this again. After OPERATION: SCORPION they are dusted off, updated, and the equipment required to implement them is manufactured and distributed. During the Jihad they are activated because of the Whiteout, allowing the FS to better combat the WoB, and any problems in the system are ironed out. Then the Blackout comes along.

Yeah, Black Boxes work on a version of 'Hyperspace' that aligns with universes like Star Wars, it a parallel dimension where you can travel faster then light, K-F Drives and HPG's use the mathematical version, which can be viewed a a matrix transformation/translation or a method call to the universe to set your co-ordinates, traveling without moving, but Black Boxes signal most definitely do move.

#684 - Alternate Wolf Dragoons (where all the Clans contribute)

In early 3006, a convoy of three Leviathan jumpships arrived at Apollo in the Lyran Commonwealth. While heavily laden with military dropships, the force was content to communicate fairly openly with local authorities and later with military and political figures within the Tamar region. Colonel Shelby (no last name) informed anyone enquiring that their origin were several struggling colonies founded by refugees from the Amaris Civil War and First Succession War. With political tensions on this federation of colonies high, she had located a cache of SLDF hardware and decided to bring it to the Inner Sphere rather than see it used against her neighbours. (The notion that she was more than happy to see it used against spheroids, while accurate, did nothing to improve her standing in the eyes of the locals).

Having established that the former RWR capital was not, as she had expected, a world of significance, Shelby obtained navigational data and further disclosed that her own command was somewhat fragmentary and that several companies would be looking to break off as independent units now that they were in the Inner Sphere. When pressed out of concern that her forces might fight their own destructive civil war on Lyran soil, she clarified that this had been agreed as a compromise and with this as a promised outlet there was no immediate likelihood of her unit self-destructing.

Duke Selwin Kelswa was not inclined to wait for instructions from Tharkad, given the Archon's poor military record and ComStar brokered a contract with Shelby's Legion, under the terms of which Kelswa underwrote the shipping for twelve dropships of mercenaries to Galatea, as well as the operating costs for the Legion's remaining five battalions during a 12 month garrison contract along the Combine border. Investigations by LIC and ROM began almost immediately to dig into the Legion and the smaller units that had broken away. Initial impressions supported the idea that the bulk of the force's equipment came from a cache - there was unusually little variation in the designs being fielded (only 26 different 'Mech types were identified across the roughly three hundred 'Mechs involved, for example) and the equipment was all of pre Succession War design. The only equipment that didn't fit were crudely armed civilian 'Mechs and vehicles, which bulked out some units. Colonel Shelby admitted that this was more typical of the armament of her homeworlds' armed forces.

Each of the different companies breaking away possessed a single Union-class dropship, converted to support a mix of 'Mechs and other combat units. By the time Shelby's Legion completed its first contract and a longer term contract with the Commonwealth was under negotiation (this time overseen by the new Archon Katrina Steiner), all twelve had reached Galatea and found employment.

Black Widows

Perhaps the most flamboyant of the Legion's splinters, the Black Widow company is named for their leader, the instantly infamous Natasha Kerensky, although it's noted that much of the actual adminstration of the unit is handled by her lover Joshua Wolf and his brother Jaime. After a brief stint operating in the Draconis March, the Black Widows were transferred to the Capellan March on the personal request of George Hasek to deal with the Turkina Company - the two units have clashed twice, thus far indecisively, although the Widows have at least survived which is more than most other units facing Turkina's five Gauss Rifles have managed.

Furious Ferrets

The Ferrets spent less than three days on Galatea before departing under contract to the Capellan Confederation. Deployed for a diversionary raid on Lurgatan, intended to draw off reserves from the ongoing fighting between the CCAF and the Defenders of Andurien on nearby Shiba, the Ferrets succeeded in that they drew in a full battalion of 'Mechs from the provincial brigade. What they did not in fact manage was to escape - the Ferrets possessed no aerospace fighters and their dropship was shot down while it tried to touch down to recover them (this also killed the six-strong tank lance aboard). The Ferrets reportedly fought to the last, inflicting heavy losses on the Defenders who had orders to try to force a surrender of the valuable 'Mechs. No 'Mechs were captured intact and lostech components salvaged were destroyed in a fire before they could be shipped to Andurien - a Maskirova operation is the assume cause.

The Horsemen

Offered generous terms by House Centrella, the Horsemen reached Canopus IV in 3007 and have been apparently largely employed as trainers to help the Magistrix improve the competence of her small military - although their squadron of aerospace fighters has also put on several displays at public events. Security around the Horsemen's equipment is tight but it is believed that MIM has made repeated efforts to convince members of the Horsemen to defect and bring their equipment across. One can only admire the mercenary's loyalty as so far as has been determined, none have yielded to this temptation and the efforts do not appear to have been detrimental to relations with their employer.

Rim Volunteers

Taking employment with the AFFS, the Rim Volunteers company was contracted for several raids into the Draconis Combine. After two successful operations, their third raid hit Matar in late 3007 only to find that it was garrisoned by Schmitt's Spirits. The battle was ferocious and the Volunteers passed up opportunities to escape in their fervor, ultimately suffering complete defeat and extermination. Their dropship and support crew, with no forces to continue the contract, were taken in by the Eridani Light Horse and continue to serve that unit.

Scavenger Sons

Since leaving Galatea, the Sons have taken four short-term contracts in Free Worlds League provinces near the Circinian Federation. Their exact employers are classified (although the MRB has verified that contracts exist and their raids are not piracy), but it is hardly a secret that they are being employed by the many petty provinces in that area to carry out attacks in furtherance of long-standing vendettas in the area. Captain-General Marik has thus far declined to expel them from the League as the attacks are at least being carried out cleanly and with the minimum of collateral damage. After losing their two armed work-mechs in their second raid, the Scavenger Sons have made good the loss by purchasing a Cheetah aerospace fighter to join the overworked Corsair that was their only previous air cover.

Schmitt's Spirits

Accepting a garrison contract with the Draconis Combine, Schmitt's Spirits proved quite energetic in working with the local garrison of Matar and were considered model mercenaries during their short tenure. The arrival of the Rim Volunteers about a year into the contract ended this. While the PSL expected some reluctance to fight, the Spirits engaged the Volunteers with bloodthirsty enthusiasm that ultimately wiped out both companies - Captain Schmitt was the only survivor of the battle and died before she could be brought back to hospital. The unit's dropship was able to arrange passage back to Galatea under their exit clause and later negotiated a return to Shelby's Legion.

Shark's Teeth

Having made it all the way to Galatea, the Shark's Teeth found themselves then backtracking into Trellshire where they have been garrisoning the Trellshire Heavy Industries factory on Chahar. Although the company hasn't seen action, their technical teams have formed a very effective partnership with the factory workers which has led to a sharp upswing in the output of munitions and spare parts. With Archon Katrina's commitment to restoring security damaged by her uncle's blundering, THI is discussing moving the Teeth to Twycross in the hope of arranging a similar partnership to benefit the 'Mech factories there. The Teeth only possess a single lostech 'Mech, a WVE-5Nb Wyvern but they have indicated they would be willing to co-operate in efforts to resume parts production (and perhaps even assembly) for the STC-2C Striker in their line-up, which they may otherwise struggle to keep operating.

Snord's Irregulars

Hired by the FWLM for operations on the successful invasion of Shiloh, the Irregulars lost their commander in the fighting and were among the units who faced contract termination and pressure to join the FWLM to make good the losses to federal forces in the battle. Mechwarrior Cranston Snord was able to rally the unit and several other survivors of mercenary commands, using Colonel Shelby as a back-channel communication to the LCAF. Three mercenary Unions escaped Shiloh and were picked up by an LCAF-owned Invader-class jumpship. Major Snord's new battalion has signed with the Archon on express terms that insist they be deployed against House Marik in the near future.

Space Apes

The Apes were one of several mercenary units deployed for the invasion of New Aragon by the AFFS. While some units emerged from the campaign with improved reputations, the Space Apes were not one of them. The 'Mech heavy force showed little cohesion under fire and after seven of their 'Mechs were destroyed by combined fire from Capellan lances, the unit withdrew precipitously. Citing their contract, the AFFS attempted to reason with them only to find two of the mechwarriors duelling with live armament. Calling a company of Waco's Rangers to restrain the Apes was apparently the last straw and with the duelling 'Mechs brought down, the remaining Apes boarded their dropship and departed, somehow obtaining jumpship passage as far as Rio before they ran out of funds and goodwill. Formally blacklisted by the MRB, the remaining Apes and most of their equipment were ransomed by Colonel Shelby and their dropship forfeited to the AFFS, while the Waco Rangers were able to salvage one of the Crocketts they brought down with parts from the other.

The Spirit Hunters

Among the last of the units to take a contract, the Spirit Hunters ultimately accepted an offer from the Taurian government to garrison Althea's Choice on their Suns border. While effectively pinned in place there with a ten year contract, the Hunters arrived in 3008 after an extended travel time and have twice repelled pirate raids, making them quite popular with the Taurians. Their reclusive nature and a cultivated image of mysticism has given them a romantic air to the populace of the remote world.

Storm Bears

Somewhat unwisely, the Storm Bears accepted a contract by the Tyr resistance movement to support an uprising on the Rasalhague world of Alleghe. It is largely assumed that the company had little idea what an uphill struggle they would face, but the Bears are known to have landed on Alleghe in late 3006 and participated in attacks on the planetary capital, with their three assault 'Mechs (one Atlas and two Royal Highlanders) wreaking havoc on the planetary militia. The deployment of the Rasalhague Regulars, eager to seize these powerful 'Mechs, crushed the revolt and the majority of the Storm Bears are presumed dead but the assault 'Mechs are not confirmed as destroyed and their dropship was not reported as departing. Popular rumour on Alleghe has it that the Bears are lying in wait for a future attempt at liberating the world from House Kurita.

Turkina Company

Hired by the CCAF, the Turkina company is stationed in the Texlos salient and have been active in the raiding and counter-raiding on this part of the border between the Capellans and the Suns. They have twice clashed with the Black Widow company and there is known antipathy between the units although they haven't thus far re-enacted the brutal end of the Rim Volunteers and Schmitt's Spirits. Their deployment of an Alacorn Mk. VI heavy tank, escorted by a pair of Star League-era Highlanders, has made them a serious threat to AFFS raids and rumour has it that Duke George Hasek has offered a large reward for their capture or elimination.

Black Widows - Wolves
Furious Ferrets - Ice Hellion
Horsemen - Probably Hell's Horses
Rim Volunteers - Likely Star Adders due to hatred with Blood Spirit.
Scavenger Sons - Suspect Goliath Scorpion
Schmitt's Spirits - probably Blood Spirit
Shark's Teeth - Diamond Sharks
Snord's Irregulars - Probably wolves? Could be Coyotes.
Space Apes - includes infighting, must be Fire Mandrill
Spirit Hunters - Either Cloud Cobra or Goliath Scorpion or Nova Cat
Storm Bears - Ghost Bear
Turkina - Jade Falcon

Maybe not represented:
Burrock
Coyote
Smoke Jaguar
Snow Raven
Steel Viper

Good guesses, but some aren't right.

Rim Volunteers are Burrocks. Scavenger Sons are Snow Ravens. Snord's Irregulars are mostly Goliath Scorpions, plus some Wolves. Spirit Hunters are Nova Cats.

Coyote, Steel Viper and Smoke Jaguars didn't send enough warriors to form independent companies, Star Adders and Cloud Cobras decided against doing so.

Scavenger Sons threw me off because they came with such sparse aerospace assets. A single Corsair?

Schmitt's Spirits was obvious. Schmitt is a Blood Spirit Blood Name.

Had no idea about the Rim Volunteers. Clans would have despised any connection to the Rimworlds unless one of their founders was from there. Only one that comes to mind is Drummond and that was a Nova Cat who are obviously the Spirit Hunters.

On the not included:
Can't see the Jags passing up an opportunity to bust skulls. Coyote might adopt a wait and see so no surprise there. Vipers OTOH, would have considered it a loss of face to not participate. They're prickly like that.
