Wish there was pictures from another view of the vehicle landing, the soil it landed on crushed with it's landing.
What we see in the touchdown isn't the soil crushing during landing - because Hayabusa never landed. What we see is the soil disintegrating at the moment the sampler horn fires its 10mm gun point-blank into it. That's how it's intended; the sampler horn then proceeds to suck up the dust generated.

The two images are the CAM-H images at moment of touchdown and 4 seconds after touchdown.

There's a third image with CAM-H taken 4 seconds before touchdown, and two pictures with ONC-W1 taken during re-ascent:
http://www.hayabusa2.jaxa.jp/topics/20190711_PPTD_ImageBulletin/

Or at least those five are the ones JAXA is releasing. The japanese text on the above page hints that they'll release more later on. There's a couple more imagers btw, although ONC-W2 looks sideward, ONC-T doesn't focus below 100m and TIR doesn't exactly produce "images". ONC-W1 is the downward-looking wide-angle navigation camera. CAM-H is a monitoring camera to observe the sampler horn specifically (that's the "foot plate" you see in those two pictures).

Not breaking news, but interesting report in Wall Street Journel.  A gentleman who came upon a old Lunar Lander computer that was scrapped, had it restored for first time in generations.   Apparently there aren't any known ones working, this one now does at least after its painstaking restoration at museum.  The Museum, after resorting the Lunar Lander computer, plugged in one of it's own memory modules, got it boot up.

The Teslarati website was saying that SpaceX is thinking of packing up total 41 raptor engines on their Starship/Superheavy Rockets. (6 on Starship, 35 on Super Heavy booster).  Problem for them is their engines are alleged to have twice the power of Saturn V, likely it will be eating launch pads for lunch.   That's going be expensive as heck effort.

I know Teslarati is pro-Tesla/spacex funded website, but i still found it interesting if it's true that is engines will end up being that powerful.

Nasa has given out more info on their plans with the Artemis Program.  Essentially they want put small base on the moon, but nothing in super amount details.   This link for the BBC article.

I have alot questions of NASA's ability to be able focus and get stuff done without a political football wiping their budget out.  I hope Blue Origins and SpaceX among other companies will make their plans work out.  I'm curious if Gateway will be remotely useful, i've read else where that having two of them acting like a relay vehicle orbiting been Earth and Moon would make more sense.

I'm on fence, since i honestly Believe SLS is waste money.  Not the intend, the sheer cost of the vehicle isn't sustainable.

If we want a sustained presense past LEO wouldn't capturing an ice asteroid be the absolutely best start? Even if it takes longer, putting the Lunar Gateway on a 1,000-ton snowball ought to save a lot of money compared to lanching the fuel from Earth.

"Capturing an ice asteroid" would be an undertaking roughly on scale with landing humans on Titan.

  • We can do it. We have to.

Step 1: Build lunar base.

Step 2: Use lunar base to expand space infrastructure and technology to the point that capture of a sizable asteroid becomes credible.

Step 3: Capture iceteroid, build a base there, and go nuts with the expansion of capabilities it brings.

Step 4: Turn lunar base into historical monument/shopping mall.

I'm not talking about a moon! :D

An asteroid redirect isn't time critical so you could use a pretty small engine for the job. Inflatable solar mirrors for a steam rocket maybe.

Just for scale, the kind of asteroids that NASA about a decade ago talked maybe bringing in close to Earth (not LEO) for study were under 1,000 tons weight, with a retrieval timeframe of up to 6 years after capture from a near-Earth orbit. That's the kind of thing you can reasonably do nowadays with some technological advance. And those 1,000-ton asteroids would only be the same size physically as a single ISS module.

The yield of such an operation for orbital mining is ridiculously low. Even if you manage to finagle a CI carbonaceous chondrite body. Something like 400 tons of serpentine (which contains two thirds of the water in the asteroid bound in its molecules), 250 tons of magnetite (... advanced rust), 350 tons of other minerals. Even if you crack the serpentine for fuel you'll only get something like 30 tons hydrogen out of that.

Should I point out that 2019 OK, that asteroid, was only 10% larger than 2019 OD which flew by at below 1 lunar distance yesterday without much fanfare?

If and when bases are established on the moon in the decades to come, maybe he'd the closer encounter with Luna will raise more eyebrows and concerns.

Oh now I'm so very curious.  Saw this tweet from NASA:

Onboard @SpaceX's #Dragon spacecraft that launched yesterday:
🧠 Biofabrication tech to 3D print human tissue
🚗A “self-parking” docking adapter
🔬 Micro-gravity microbes in rocks
Now, I'd heard we were working woth concepts for 3D printed tissue, but now we're actually doing it and on the space station!  Weird and creepy Space Zombie stuff aside, I wonder why they're trying it out in freefall.  Not to mention wondering how well the technology's come along planetside.

Because with their current technology level (for the particular system used) 3d printed tissue is not resilient enough to withstand gravity and dissolves into a puddle.

Looks like the Solar Light sailing spacecraft was a success.  I wasn't aware Bill Nye was involved with the project, which i think is cool.

CNN interviewed Bill Nye about it.

:o sorry, was trying to link to the recent 3D map of the Milky Way revealing a significant warp to the disk, which begins near (in astronomical terms) the rimward edge of the IS.

Try this again, think that's the one I wanted  :D

Hmmm... I'm wondering if any of that warping might explain some of the observations that lead theorists to dark matter...

Hmmm... I'm wondering if any of that warping might explain some of the observations that lead theorists to dark matter...

Most of the observations behind that fallacious pseudo-theory are based on observations of other galaxies.

Not arguing that the observations aren't real. Just every so-called "hypothesis" for DM is fit to a selected set of observations, and falls over once you bring in other data. In addition, none have yielded testable predictions that have succeeded - those that have made predictions, that can be tested, fail.

And let's not forget that the quantity of "missing matter" is continually being downgraded. To the point where we can probably explain the universal expansion without dark matter, but not the galactic rotation issues.

My personal theory is that if there is dark matter, it's the mass of grant application paperwork for academics who want to be funded to research dark matter.  :flame:

Now Dark Energy - at this point, no-one's staking much ego on predictions. They're still observing, measuring, and validating. The theories are clearly initial best guesses, and no-one's creating an industry. But it does indeed look like there's some strange **** happening with gravitation on mega-scale distances that we don't yet understand.

I've been skeptical of the dark matter theories since they came out.  I think we're just missing something less mysterious, probably due to insufficient detection technology.
