I wouldn't worry too much about jump ships and the like. I've just folded space from IX. There are many new machines on UX.

Thread Necromancy!

So, for any of you wondering how the orbital mechanics of Niops work, wonder no longer: we found them, only 40 light-years away:

https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/02/nearby-system-has-7-earth-sized-planets-several-in-the-habitable-zone/

Let's look at the similarities:

1. Red dwarf star (M8V instead of M5V, but close enough)
2. Seven planets close to Earth's mass, with the last three being clearly in the world's habitable zone.

I mean, holy crap, could this any more perfectly resemble Niops?

Just saw this on the news, its incredibly close.

For those playing the home game:

Niops
Spectral Class: M5V
Time to Jump Point (at 1G with midpoint turnover): 2.45 days
Proximity Point Distance: 0.11 billion km (0.7353 AU)
Recharge Time: 206 hours
Approx. mass: 14% of Sol
Approx. Radius: 20% of Sol

TRAPPIST-1
Spectral Class: M8V
Time to Jump Point (at 1G with midpoint turnover): 2.09 days
Proximity Point Distance: 0.08 billion km (0.5348 AU)
Recharge Time:  209 hours
Approx. Mass: 8% of Sol
Approx. Radius: 11% of Sol

So, yes, TRAPPIST-1 is  around 57% the mass and diameter of our fictional Niops, but it's close enough that you could easily swap it out to little to no effect in your own game, as well as rough descriptions of what each world may be like.

What about TRAPPIST-1's position in relation to Earth? Rimward-Anti-Spinward?

What about TRAPPIST-1's position in relation to Earth? Rimward-Anti-Spinward?

Opposite direction from Niops, amusingly.

Because Battletech's star map is 2D and takes liberties with reality, it takes a little extrapolation, but it's in the same ballpark direction as Markab and Fomalhaut, 40 LY from Earth.  So, figure TRAPPIST-1 is somewhere in the area between Styx, Nirasaki and Northwind.

OK, hopefully playing my first Alpha Strike game next month, and looking to do a Niops-themed company for it.  Limit is 500 PV, and I was looking at:

2 HGN-732 Highlanders
2 UM-R60 UrbanMechs
4 BLR-1G BattleMasters
4 SHD-2H Shadow Hawks

Everyone is at a skill level of 3, which was recommended to speed up the game.

Thoughts, ideas, comments, suggestions?

Been looking around... Crockett-1 and -1b have same profile as Highlander-732, just way better stats... only -2 and +5 PV respectfully...

The -1b is a Royal, and we know they do build SLDF mechs, Royal possible.

4, 4, 3 or 5, 5, 4 vs. your 3, 4, 3...

Now if you jump to a -732b it gives you 67 PV...

Everything you have listed, minus a single Urbanmech, leaving you 2 PV left. Higlander-732b and Crockett-1b... 5, 6, 4 and 5, 5, 4 damage, plus the rest.

Hmm, I'll have to see if I can dig up my Crockett mini.  That's got possibilities.

Would you run with BA?

Meaning a triple Nighthawk (P)ALs, one XXI and two XXII.

2 PV XXI
7 PV XXII
7 PV XXII

All 6"J and the XXI has LECM, the others have 1, 0, 0.

Would mean losing the Urbie, but you could swing it. A pair of Powerhouses anchoring with the SHawks running Recon with your BMasters dictating the field.

Thoughts GB?

I would have to buy some BA minis. I have 2-3 Kanazuchi, 1 Sloth, 1 Nighthawk, and 1 Marauder.  Those are individual suits.

So, haven't had a chance to pick it up yet, and debating between now and next payday, but does anyone know if Niops gets a mention in Shattered Fortress?  I know there's some Marian activity there, so it had me wondering.

Not one that I recall . . . but to be fair, most of it is focused FS/CC/Rep with a dash of Drac, Wolf & Falcon.

Disappointing in that regard since MWDA left a lot of great League based storylines- to include the Regulan's trying to pit Niops against the Rim Commonality.

Bit behind on my 2020 releases, and it's been a couple years.  Anything in the recent source books or Recognition Guides for Niops?

Aurigans, Scorpions, and pirates also got some mention.  IIRC Niops hand built Black Knights, with that mech now out in RecGuides I do not expect them to get a reference.

Aurigans are just a nod to the game since it's already a fallen state. Scorpions are still Clan, not Periphery.

We do not know about the Aurigans for sure . . . think the Hansa got a shout out too.  And the Scorp nod was to a freebirth IIRC.

They used to build those and Highlanders, but the ability to do so was lost during the Jihad between the raids and destruction of the Project Workshops by first the Marians and then the Word of Blake.

In effect making Niops of the Dark Age like a hermit state. It's uncertain whether they can even build Nighthawks now

I think the only industry Niops has left is mining which is run by Interstellar Expeditions. In FM 3145 it is stated that the workshops were abandoned. Best guess: Niops can only produce ammo for it's military hardware.

I hope the next time they make it into the lore, they have recovered a lot of their capabilities. I didn't have a problem with all the chaos that happened in Niops because it was part of creating adventure hooks for the region in the early post Jihad era. But having Niops stay down forever turns it from something unique and fun... to just any other run of the mill down on their luck periphery mini-nation.

I guess I very much look at it from an out of Universe perspective.

Since details are slim, the developers can chose how well Niops recovers or overcomes their challanges. I know Ray wants to simplify the faction situation. Which is understandable, but If you are gonna kill it, then kill it like Circinius and put it out of its misery, but if they are going to keep it on the map, it should be something more than a has been rando periphery state.
