Customy space ship design.
« on: 05 June 2024, 12:16:36 »
Hello, I would ask for help with jumpship design. I'm fan of Invader hydroponics system, but i really like Magellan look, and biggest short coming is lack of gravity deck.

My questions are:
What would be the best to represent hydroponics systems in game (i was thinking about refrigerated cargo bay)?

Is there any idea how many people could 1 ton of hydroponics support?

How additions of that two systems would change look of dropship outside?

I think that makes sense.

An square meter of hydroponics generates about 100 kg of food per year, depending on the crop.
A person needs about 1.5 kg per day, so 547.5 kg per year. Call it 6 square meters per person as a baseline. With a full crew of 53, that's 318 square meters.
If we assume that you need a *cubic* meter of water to support a square meter of hydroponic (probably not) that turns in to 318 tons.
If you only need 10 centimeters of water on average (which is the depth of most standard hydroponics trays I found), it'd be 31.8 tons.

If you want enough to cover additional people, bad crops, mechanical failures, etc, you likely need to boost that tonnage anyway.

What's the second system?
Hydroponics would be inside the existing cargo areas presumably, so no exterior changes.
The solution is just ignore Paul.

About thist second system, i was thinking about gravity deck. I saw that some ships have rings around them and others don't. That made me curious.

Thank you for that math on hydroponics. It will help me think how much tons i should put on jumpship.    :)

Grav Decks can be 100% internal to a craft such that you wouldn't see it (If the vessel is large enough). For military vessels this would be common, since it'd be a relatively vulnerable structure.
If it gets added after a ship has been completed, mounting it on the outside of the hull is likely the easiest and cheapest way to do it, but it would be very difficult to protect.

Glad it helped!
