Aeneas Assault Tank
« on: 03 November 2013, 15:24:34 »
Noting the weakness of their heavy armor corps, and seeking a design that could compete on the modern battlefield with the Challenger and Alacorn tanks, the Free Worlds League took the unusual step of importing the heavy Gauss rifle for use on its new Aeneas design.  Although the heavy gauss is mounted in a forward fixed position, the tank's turret is formidably armed itself.

Not a bad design, but I'd really want CASE and an AMS too!

Yeah?  You think an AMS is worth its weight in armor?

I can see the argument for a tank, since SRMs are such a threat in terms of motive crits.

If you can strip some armour off the sides, it may be worth it. I was going to suggest using that tonnage to upgrade to an iHGR instead.

It's already pretty lightly armored for a 100-ton tank, by my standards...

I think of tanks dying before breaching their armour, but most of those experiences come from the days when vees were much easier to kill.  ;D

Yeah, they'll turn into bricks pretty fast if you hit them with cluster weapons, but they won't stop fighting until you crack the armor.  So if you have a good turret loadout it's worth armoring a heavy tank pretty well.

They still get critted out pretty quickly. The biggest difference is that insta-kill results are unlikely, so it tends to be more "critted into uselessness" than "critted to death". Since SRMs are still (at least IME) one of the most common crit-seeking weapons an AMS is really nice to have. And CASE is almost mandatory on an assault tank!

But I agree that you're pretty darn tight on weight. IMHO the best thing to do would be to drop the LB10 for a SRM/LRM combo, even if that is kind of bland and boring...

Wouldn't it be more (*cough* cliché *cough*) FWL to use a light engine, dual LGRs, and LFF?

Ooo! OOOOOOO! That was a bad one!...and I liked it.
