Elemental (Fire) or Elemental III?
« on: 26 April 2024, 22:12:09 »
Just thought I'd see what people's thoughts were between the two.  It's fire-resistant armor and a one-shot SRM 2 vs basic stealth armor and a one-shot Advanced SRM 2.

FR armour protects against one class of weaponry only. Stealth helps against all classes except AE (which FR doesn't help with either), and the advanced SRMs get that extra tick of range. Elemental III for me!

That's true, but Infernos are Battletech's only Instant Death Effect attack that isn't a nuke.

Fire-Resistant Armor shouldn't exist and stealth armor is much more interesting on top of being more fun.  Elemental IIIs 100%.

Kansas City players, or people who are just passing through the area, come join us at the Geekery just off Shawnee Mission Parkway for BattleTech!  Current days are Tuesdays in the afternoon and evening.  I can't make every single week, but odds are pretty good that somebody will be there.

Those are good for squishing battle armor, but they don't have the effect of "you are automatically dead, regardless of how much armor you have."

I half agree with you.  Fire resistant armor should half the effects of fire, not be immune to infernos entirely.

BA stealth armor shouldnt work at short range.  Stealth has no counter play, no probe that reduces it.  Since it works at range 1, it's just always useful with no drawback.  Imho this runs counter to design choices mattering.  Compared to stealth armor on mechs, with no short range bonus and +10 heat load, stealth armor on BA is always useful.

I voted for the Fire, because I'm primarily a Jade Falcon player, and it helps to be able to bathe the map in fire without melting your own troops.

That said, as an overall suit, the III is better.

See, I'm the opposite.

Fire-Resistant is very Rare so I love seeing it.

And Stealth is sort of "Anti-Clan" so I certainly don't want it on my bog standard Elemental suits that are supposed to be common.

Now all that said on the Table Top, I'm using whatever fits the mission & BV allowed since I mostly use ANY kind of Infantry as filler BV to do an Infantry Job while also topping off BV.

The Elemental (Fire) and Elemental III are close enough in BV that you would virtually never have to take cost into consideration between the two.

Fire is my go to, forested terrain is very advantageous for BA and flammable so having fireproof BA to get in there and leg strike overheated mechs is great. Stealth would only be used for ambushes or headhunter ops

True, but the BV portion of my comment was more about ALL infantry,  BA, Conventional, Mechanized, Platoons, Points, Level-1's, etc etc.

Three, and it's a cumulative affect from all Infernos that hit in a turn, so if two units fire infernos at a BA squad and one gets a total of 5 and the other hits with 4, that's three roasted BA.

Yeah, I had a Harasser land both SRM6s on a Fa Shih squad in 1 turn . . . enough Infernos hit to wipe them out.  How about A4 Infernos?  It will be a MUCH larger risk to Elementals shortly since it is a Capellan munition though they did not use it against the Hell's Horses back during the Jihad.

I do not remember, do that armor help against Plasma?  If so, I think Plasma is the bigger threat.

Yes, fire resistant armor protects against the bonus damage from plasma weapons:

Quote
A unit with fire-resistant armor ignores the heat from heatcausing
weapons (see Weapons and Equipment, p. 113). Standard
damage caused by such weapons is halved, rounded down.
