I don't think I have seen this mentioned in any iteration of the Chaos Campaign rule sets: When a unit is salvageable post battle, if the pilot is not dead, does the player also gain the pilot for later use as well? If so, is this pilot considered free for cost SP purposes? Or is it intended that the player must pay the cost of hiring a new pilot, applying the SP hiring cost modifiers (Campaign Operations, p 163) based on the P/G skillsum rating of the pilot?

The rules dont cover the complexities of prisoners, ransoms, or bondsmen you want to redeploy.
For balance purposes, I would recommend paying for new pilots, and looking at the bondsman aspect as fluff.
The solution is just ignore Paul.
