Wrong primer
« on: 06 April 2020, 15:46:20 »
Sorting out minis and i've got a couple of plastic minis i've already primed white for reasons unknown. Now, i've yet to settle on a paint scheme, so it might be OK, but what if my paint scheme needs other base?
Can i just re-prime them? If not, are there other options?

Also, which FedSuns paint schemes work well with white primer?

You could always just brush-paint another base over the primer.

That is, if i need black base, i can just paint it black and then whatever i'm going for?

Figures the simplest solution works lol

Still need to figure out what to paint, might not need to even worry about the original primer...

Basic Davion Green goes great over white primer. At this scale colors are lighter to the eye anyway, and starting on a white base means the green will pop more and keep its richness and look less muted and shadowed. I use white or LT grey primer on most earthtone minis in 15mm scale or smaller, and add depth and shadow with washes and highlight.
So any unit using desert colors, or camo greens and greys, will all look fine over White. So does a bright yellow or red palette as far my experience goes.

Well, i've ended up switching these units for Lyrans. Alliance Guard/Bolan Guards brown and tank probably works OK on white primer?

It might come out looking a bit lighter than if you used grey or black, but it will work just fine, and won't really restrict your color scheme any.  You might need to do an extra base coat, but that's about it.
If you DO want to reprime, an alcohol soak will remove the primer if its acrylic without damaging plastic minis, but you'll have to scrub a bit to get everything out of the crevices since it doesn't dissolve the paint as effectively as acetone would (which would also absolutely destroy plastic minis).

For future reference - some primers you can't re-prime right away. I ran into one brand where it said to second coat 30-60 minutes or one day after initial coat. Basically a new coat had interactions with uncured product. This can be worse if you aren't using the same type of paint. It's rare, but I heard horror stories from an auto painter I ran into.

If something has cured for a few days you're probably good.

And davion guard can look excellent with a white primer, but if you default black you might need a different system than you're used to.
