AMM, TMM, Airborne Units
« on: 20 February 2024, 16:47:06 »
Just started to play aerospace so here some basic rule questions:

In air-to-air combat:

1. Is there a to hit modifier for the attacker movement?
2. Is there a TMM for moved hexes?
3. Is the +1 for airborne units also applied?

Thank you!

1. Only if you exceeded safe thrust
2. No, only Angle of Attack modifiers apply, displacement doesn't affect your shots beyond weapon's range
3. No, that only applies to ground units firing up. If you are already a flier you do not suffer that to hit penalty (which makes VTOLs with AA missiles pretty nice)

Air-to-Air is a little bit ambiguous because there are ground units which can be airborne.  For example, an ASF can execute a strike (+2 penalty) against a VTOL (which may impose a significant TMM penalty) when it is airborne.  The VTOL firing back in turn suffers no TMM, but it does have an angle of attack modifier and suffers an AMM when using cruise speed.  To avoid ambiguity, you need to be precise about whether it's an aerospace unit (Aerospace fighter, but also conventional fighter, airship, or dropship) or an airborne ground unit (VTOL, WIGE, or oddball battle armor).

VTOLs are ground units and use ground unit rules, no matter that they don't spend much time actually touching the ground. Therefore an aero unit firing at a VTOL must use Air-to-Ground rules. And because VTOLs are ground units, they fire on Aeros using Ground-to-Air rules. Same applies to WiGEs.

Also note: The aforementioned +1 to hit airborne units only applies when ground units are firing on airborne ground units such as VTOLs or WiGEs. It does not apply when firing on Aeros.

Thank you!

One more question:
Does the "Atmospheric action" modifier apply to all control rolls on an atmosphere-/ground map?

That +2 due to being in atmo?

Yup, it applies to all Control Rolls. This ain't no slugfest between mechs lasting turn after turn after turn until one combatant finally falls apart. Air combat is lethal.

One more question
Also the example in TW doesn't mention it, i'd like to ask.

Does the -3 modifier for Aerospace targets executing a ground attack count for ground
units shooting at the aerospace target?

That's just for an aero shooting at a ground-attacking aero.

Isn't it an effective +1 when you add the -1 from being a small craft or fighter in atmo from TW pg. 249, assuming it isn't a dropship that is.

You are correct. Those rolls are still always nail-biters, trust me.

Two more:

Can i fly evasive while doing a special maneuver?

Special maneuver occur at the beginning at the movement phase. But i can still adjust thrust before right?
