Printing Jorg Cappel's Hex Terrain
« on: 31 July 2024, 01:24:38 »
I just started printing Jorg Cappel's impressive HexTerrain files.

For those of you that have printed these, I'm curious if you kept them the same size... upscaling seems very popular. What did you use for trees?

Also, I intend on printing some river tiles... what's a good way to get a nice water look?

TIA

I kept mine the standard size, only because I didn't think to upscale until I had already printed a couple.Standard size seems to fit everything well enough. Some of the new bigger minis overlap when adjacent.I bought trees from hobby lobby. something like:

My water came out decently. Nothing super fancy. I airbrushed light blue for depth 1 and dark blue for depth 2, threw down some gravel, then flowed epoxy over it.

That water looks awesome! Nicely done.

Hot off the printer...these are upscaled 125% giving me a 1.5 inch hex.

Going to start painting. I bought some rustoleum camo spray paint that I am going to start hitting panels with. Those paints are completely flat and are all earth tones. I feel like that would be a good base to do anything I want from there.

Indeed!  That water looks great, and the plates look like they printed very clean... :)

Thanks. It was my first time messing around with epoxy.
It was a fun project and I'm very happy with the results.
I think the designer is working toward another kickstarter with additional terrain elements.
A good use for the 3d printer for sure.

Jorg Cappel's HexTerrain files are a fantastic choice for creating a detailed BattleTech board. Many players choose to upscale the tiles to better fit their miniatures and create a more expansive battlefield. For trees, popular options include using model railroad trees or 3D-printing them with flexible filament for durability. For river tiles, you can achieve a realistic water effect by painting a gradient of blues and greens, then applying a glossy varnish or clear resin to give it a convincing shimmer and depth.
