Title: PaperTech III: The Search for Cheap Counters
Post by: Sartris on 19 July 2016, 12:57:44
Below are a series of links for paper counters for use with BattleTech (and maybe Alpha Strike if you're so inclined). Provided are both the PDF and Word .docx. The doc files allow you to copy and paste counters to a new document for on-demand printing.

Bedwyr's original set, from which I derived inspiration for my own, has been hosted on Merdon Pryde's site for years if you prefer those (http://www.pryderockindustries.com/dl_boards.php#CTR)

To display correctly, the .docx files require the BattleTech Oldstyle font, which can be found in the downloads section of Sarna.net

These look excellent! However, some of the figures have the wrong names. Like the Linebacker being listed as a Hatamoto-Chi and the Naga as a Victor. Small things like that are bound to slip through on such an undertaking, however. Nice work!  O0

All modern TROs are more or less done - I still have to add the 3085 Phoenix design art to the Unseen and Phoenix collection. I'll probably also do a master XTRO list and one for random stuff from sourcebooks not found in mainline TROs.

Great work. I think the only problem is that from what I'm seeing these are 'Mech only, and given how often people talk about fielding multiples of tanks that could be a bit of a problem, even worse is on the BA front, particularly the Clans during REVIVAL

i've thought about vehicles. we'll see how much motivation i have when i finish mechs.

if you want multiples, copy/paste to a new document. using the doc lets you simply click on what you want and copy it wholesale

Sorry, I wasn't asking you to put multiples in a document but given how people often talk about deploying multiple of a vehicle the ability to create paper counters yourself is useful. Also applies to Bugs

Gents,

I know this isn't specifically BattleTech, especially lately, but some may still find some interest in these free paper counter downloads:

http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/189303/Paper-Game-Pieces-UEDF-Wave-2-for-Robotech-RPG-Tactics

There are 4 - UEDF 1 and 2 (2 linked), and Zentraedi 1 and 2 (you'll find the links in the "People who bought this ..." section).

Cheers,

W.

yup. 100% MS Word. I had extracted the artwork from official record sheets for printing from MML so that part was already done.

Clarification: Vorpalstar probably means the dropbox links are not working. The 3 I tried were dead.

FYI, due to reasons these aren't available from DriveThruRPG anymore, but a Google search found them at a place called Cardboard Warriors and the Robotech RPG Tactics Wiki (http://robotech-rpg-tactics.wikia.com/wiki/Official_Paper_Minis).

(Side note: "Cardboard Warrior" is going to be my new nickname for the Patron PatrolMech.)

Edit: Cardboard Warrior redirected to RPGNow, which didn't have the files either, for same reasons DTRPG doesn't have them any longer.

You could also use micro binder clips like these: https://www.amazon.com/Officemate-Micro-Binder-Clips-31030/dp/B003U4U3YQ (https://www.amazon.com/Officemate-Micro-Binder-Clips-31030/dp/B003U4U3YQ). I'll leave it up to you if you want to remove the clip's wires when the 'Mech is mounted.

As the 2nd KS shipments make their way across the deep blue sea, I've returned to these for a few updates

An updated Unseen/Classic/Phoenix/Phoenix II (hereby known as UCPP2 for reasons that should be obvious) version is in the offing and will replace the old set once all of the art is released (ie October / November). It's more or less done and requires about a half dozen more lineart upgrades

In the same vein, I'll do a stand-alone release for the KS art.

Since most of the RecGuide art is going to be folded into the KS pack or the UCPP2 set, the ~28-30 RG debutants will get their own set

I'm going to venture into battlearmor and protos in the near future. Unsure how I'm going to package those

I've also acquired the old BT font from Sarna (I find some buried treasure every time I tool around in their files section) and am in the process of replacing the other military-esque spray-paint stencil font I was using (AR Destine). I'm through 3055 (the unseen one I'm not bothering with because it's getting replaced soonish).

I have a mostly complete unseen/reseen/new art classic ready to go as soon as the last four pieces of art drop.

I have a mostly complete unseen/reseen/new art classic ready to go as soon as the last four pieces of art drop.

The GoAC/Kickstarter art and Rec Guide originals will see some kind of compellation depending on how CGL chooses to package it in the print version of the recguies

So glad this will continue!

Even with the reinforcements box from the Kickstarter, these are still a hugely useful resource.

Thanks for continuing the support!

These definitely beat reverse folding my old mechs and writing in pencil. :) I've noticed there's a copy-paste error in the TRO Succession Wars, the row that starts with the Awesome is labelled incorrectly, it has the same labels as the Wolverine row.

Question to the Paper Counter Crowd… does anyone have experience using Photoshop or any Photoshop clones to add color to these? I have what I am tentatively describing as “An Idea”.

Thank you for all the great counters!

I'm trying some coloring on them but i saw that 5 of the docx-files aren't avilable on dropbox. Is it possible to reupload them?

It's the following docx:
PaperTech - TRO 3050U.docx
PaperTech - TRO 3058U.docx
PaperTech - TRO 3075.docx
PaperTech - TRO 3145 & 3150.docx

-Edit-
Nevermind. It took several tries to download them but they work.

Y'know, paper counter standees are a good way to fix the scale issue that you have with Minis that are roughly 1/250 scale on a map that is 1/900 scale.

I actually did this when I first got into playing BattleTech and had access to a printer/copier.  Took the Mech pictures in the 2nd ed book and photocopied them at a smaller scale.  Many old games of the time had the smaller clip bases, and it worked nicely.  Might do that again for fun. (I made my own map-scale kitbash minis since then, but there are times I need something for better proxies.)

Nothing like having properly 1/900 scale mechs on a map to show how the ranges aren't really that short and elevation changes aren't really as steep as they would appear when you forget the scale differences between modern mini and map.

TRO: Dark Age has been added. I'll be holding off any RecGuide additions until the compilations are released.

Quick question:  What do you have available for infantry?

none

There are infantry counters (half a hex size) in the new Mercenaries Kickstarter files.

I wanted to check if there are more vehicle counters on the internet and found these! The only problem is that they don't have a clear front of the vehicle. Maybe I'll just somehow paste these over the new counters.

They have some tanks but no Condor which I need for the RONIN! campaign.

It's in the file called "Counters.pdf" as part of the Open Beta of the Battlefield Support program.

When preparing for a Star-Wars RL: Interceptor-game, I found Star-Wars stickers of X-Wings, Tie-Fighters, etc. and put them on counters at the 99-Cents Only store; then, I found actual Star-Wars toys the size of minis that worked even better!

Did that with my Cobra G.I. Joe stickers, attached them to Imperial TIEs and such.

Nothing funnier than going to an Armada Game with your SSD sportin' Cobra Livery...

I found Armada to be very expensive.

Also, we did use GI-Joes once to play Battletroops; however, with another friend, that actually liked, GI-Joe, we played using Cyberpunk 2020's Friday Night Fire-Fight rules; that game, was bloody and he wasn't used to GI-Joe characters, um, dying, messily.

It is, but the shock value is awesome, especially when you bring in an SSD, several Squadrons of Tie Interceptors, Line and Bombers. Then deploy a ground base using Star Wars Tactics with 3d terrain.

We had a Civil War battle that was like, holy crap, Orbitary Strikes, Ground, Aero and Space battles as one fleet tries to eliminate each other while not dying. Trading shots and evading to stay alive in one room, we had a hex-based floor tarp with several furniture placed as Planetary orbits... Evil tennis balls as asteroids.

When we got over a Planet hex, and wanted to Support our troops, we would pause and go to another larger room to deal with that. Did 1 Space and 3 Ground per Turn. Awesome combo.

But yeah, my Cobra SSD was called The Fang and I ran two AT-TEs, quad AT-STs several Squads of Stormtrooper "Vipers" and Droid "BAAT"s. Yeah just a "reskin" for them.

Correct.

Overall, it was a good game.

But I do wish there were more Hex Packs made then what we have, the Promo1.

Like more, but in an official Download PDF.

I am not saying free, I'd buy it, go something like 3 files of random terrain tile sizes for like a $1.50 each and do several PDFs in a Series of Hex Packs.

As it is, I color photocopy my maps and cut them out while lamenting them before gluing unto a dark stained wooden hex, slightly larger than the OG. makes things easier to read, and I can upgrade the hexes.

Also, the dollar-stores have Christmas decorations, like, miniature-trees for Holiday-sets which you can use for your games!!!

And yes, anything that's, "Cobra", is officially used by the Galactic-Empire.

Where are these files? I can't see them in the google drive with the books etc. Is it limited to certain backer tiers?
