Irian Armored Fists
« on: 27 August 2018, 06:07:36 »
The story of the Irian Armored Fists starts as the 4th Irian Planetary Militia. This unit raised in 2882 was part of the garrison of Irian for most of its history even if sometimes its assets were used in incursions in nearby systems. The 4th Irian Planetary Militia was a mechanized infantry division tasked with rapid response to treats to the contested planet, generally in support of mercenary or Free World Battlemech regiments.

During the late 2900 and the start of the 31st century, Irian saw increasing changes of hands. The Irian militia units but suffered increasing attrition. As the place was in a constant state of flux during this period, the FWL nor any of the raiding parties of the LC or CC reinforced the local militia much, preferring to rely in off-planet troops and mercenaries to battle for Irian.

The constant complains of the president of the planet (usually a member of the Frapollo family) did not achieve much, and discontent settled among the Irian troops. By the time of the Marik Civil War Irian had had several defections and some units had had to be disbanded to keep others combat ready.

The Marik Civil War had a profound effect on irian, with some of the planet’s militia units aligning with Anton Marik due to their disaffection with the FWLM. The 4th Militia remained loyal to Janos, but refused to engage the 2nd Militia in a suicidal run. Labelled as traitors by the force commander appointed by the FWLM and unwilling to fall into Anton’s camp, they had to defend themselves and flee off planet.

And this is where we start our campaign. September 11th 3014, Bergan Heights, near Solsona and its starport. Irian.

The players are part of the 322nd artillery company. Their unit is composed of Hunter Support tanks, and are supporting the advance of the 4th towards a small military spaceport. Facing them are armor and infantry elements of the FWLM and there are reports of mechs sightings, but nothing confirmed….

Facing them are armor and infantry elements of the FWLM and there are reports of mechs sightings, but nothing confirmed….

For the first game we started in media res, with the players taking command of the 322nd, composed of 16 Hunters and 4 spotter VTOL (off map). The game started with the Hunters redeploying and shooting at some (unseen) stuff for a few turns and getting counterbattery fire in response. A pair of Hunters were lost that way.

Suddenly a quartet of Saracens of the 112nd recon emerged from a river nearby followed hot on their armored heels by a fast FWLM battle lance! And here all hell broke loose. The Hunters tried to redeploy to face that unexpected threat in their midst and protect the all-important command vehicle that acted as the brains for the remote control Hunters.

The battle was intense, and even if the 2 shadowhawks, Vindicator and Warhammer were beaten back, it costed the unit several vehicles to do so. The timely arrival of the company’s Warrior VTOLs and a mechanized hover unit of the 17th infantry contributed to rout the mechs. The only positive element here was the report that the 4th had been able to clear a path to the Solsona spaceport and that one of the Warriors scored a direct hit on the cockpit of the Vindicator, downing it in one strike. The Marauder was taken out by combined fire and the Shadow Hawls retreated after causing significant damage to the tank company, including stepping in one of the vehicles.

The havy flat trucks of the unit took the Vindicator and dragged it to the spaceport along with some of the wounded Hunters.

The 332nd Artillery company reached the Solsona, where it took control of the aerospace installations. Rarely there did not seem to be a garrison there. Interrogating the few military personnel present they learned that the garrison had gone to the Berga pass to ambush the 4th Militia. The force included mechs and armored vehicles. Things did not look good.

An artillery company, a support unit by definition, cannot hold a spaceport on its own, so Captain Xavier Curd talked with the crew of one of the Intruder dropships that there were to be used to lift the 4th off planet, and that agreed to leave FWL space with them. Curd ordered his people to load the Intruder with the vehicles of the company and as many supplies as could be cramped in and hope for the best. Along with several ammo trucks, diverse supplies and recovery vehicles they loaded the downed Vindicator in the ship. Only 3 Saracens and a pair of infantry squads were left behind to provide advanced warning in case others came, be them friends or opponents. They were to mount a nearby Fury dropship.

Lieutenant George Smith, informed from his Saracen that an infantry squad and a Manticore were coming from the mountain pass. There seemed to be other troops in pursuit. The Saracens performed a distraction maneuver to allow the infantry APC to reach the spaceport with the Manticore, dodging it with a Scorpion and Vedette units. A pair of mechs were seen in the distance, but did not intervene. One of the Saracens was lost during the operation but the infantry reached the starport. Seeing pressure mounting and shells starting to fall near the ships, Captain Curd ordered the 2 dropships to take flight.

En route to a pirate point to jump off system without having to pass though the fighter screen covering the Nadir point of the system, the staff of the 332nd company reviews available assets:
1 Manticore
14 Hunters (2 damaged)
2 warrior VTOLs
4 ferret VTOLs
3 Saracen hovers
4 infantry squads with 4 heavy hover APC

The Saracens, Manticore and 2 of the infantry squads are in Fury while the rest are in the Intruder.
They also had several trucks (both armored and unarmored) and J27 ammo carriers. And a downed Vindicator without a cabin. Ammo was not a problem at the moment, but a few battles and they would be running out of LRM and SRM ammo.

Now they were going rogue, so it was time to change the designation of the unit and think about options. First step would be a destination. They decided to go to Galatea, the mercenary hub. That was the easiest of the decisions. And then they had to decide on what to do with their force (nobody hires a mercenary artillery company, regardless of them being top of the line artillery) and a name.

The option to search for employment in a larger force was discussed, but the troops disliked that options. They were Irians, not someone’s lap dog! And they had broken ties to decide for themselves instead of being subservient to another ruler. Given those constraints it was decided that they needed to rethink the company structure.

Roderick Square, one of the engineers came up with the idea of mounting a PPC on a Hunter chassis. The fusion reactor could certainly cope with that. The drop in tonnage would allow them to increase armor somewhat as well, and since the suspension was designed to sustain the impact of massive LRM salvos it should be able to cope with that as well. Not a perfect fit, but it could be functional. He charged with testing the theory mounting the Vindicator’s PPC in one of the damaged Hunter chassis to see if the idea was feasible.

The name was a longer debate. It was settled to the Irian Fists, but it took quite a while (including OOC table discussion) to reach that discussion. Finally, the new designation decided to be registered in the MRB was Irian Fists. As a symbol of belonging and a show of power (yeah, right…).

With that we ended the first session and headed home.

PC and NPC:
Note: the names are the real player names turned to English. So it is in fact an internal joke.
Xavier Curd (Company captain, NPC); it has been pointed out that it is weird that the company captain, being the Game Master, will be leading the opposition in most battles
Richard Fields (Lieutenant, 1st Hunter battery. PC)
Borja Farm (Lieutenant, 2nd Hunter battery, PC)
George Marfa (Lieutenant, 3rd Hunter battery, PC)
George Smith (Lieutenant, Recon platoon, PC)
Janus Ashes (Lieutenant, VTOL recon corps, NPC)
Marcel Foot (Lieutenant, infantry platoon, NPC)
Roderick Square (head engineer, NPC)

Arnau Olivier (Intruder captain, NPC)
Alba Oliver (Fury captain, NPC)

Elmoth,

You are off to a good start.  You have 4 squads of infantry and 4 heavy hover APCs, you have enough for 4 platoons of infantry.  Are you going to add more?

No idea. Depends on the PC. I am the game master after all. Surprisingly (or not) the captain is extremely permeable to the opinions of his main officers ;)

On the transports I think we might have got it wrong then. The idea was "1 APC per squad". We are enot that knowledgeable in BT transports, so might have gone overboard here xD

no such thing as too much transport, can always be used for cargo

as far as the CO being GM, leave him  commanding from the dropships or a CP, I would quickly elevate the most engaged player to XO and basically let them take over most things until they are ready to fully run things

the PPC is a great  idea, and if it tests ok they could arrange a variant license with the manufacturer

Sounds like we went overboard with the heavy APCs, and normal APCs are more what we were looking for.

The PPC thing is basically it is a way to have quasi-Myrmidons in 3015. They will be unreliable, and prone to break down, but myrmidons by the rules none the less. It was suggested by a player actually, even if I had that in my backburner as well. It might be that he reads the forum as well... If you do, hello Jordi ;)

Now they have to secure 10-ish PPCs (no easy feat) and ensure they get a contract before they get out of funds and things to sell... Oh, and a Vindicator cabin and the technical knowledge to repair it. And a pilot. And... Well, lots of stuff to do :)

One month. They had been in Galatea for a month, and it seemed unlikely that they would be leaving in brief. Square had been able to make the PPC test on a Hunter work, even if there were some overpower and connection problems between the fusion reactor and the weapon. At the time there was much rejoicing and the unit used its meagre funds and the selling of stockpiles of ammunition and LRM launchers to acquire 10 second hand PPC from the Point Blank Salvagers a mechwarrior mercenary company. The new tank protype was christened The Lion by a troop poll.  Roderic Square and his assistants also increased the protection of the vehicle, since the drop in weight of the main weapon allowed them to do that. It increased the weight of the vehicle to almost 40 tons, though, and suspension could cope with that, but it would require more frequent maintenance.

Still, there were no jobs coming their way, and this was worrying the command of the squad. If they were not able to get some income, they would need to start selling important supplies. They had already parted with a significant amount of missile stockpiles, so things were not going very well.

And then an offer came from an unexpected quarter.

2 of their new Lions were practicing in a shooting range when a representative of Defiance Industries approached them. She had seen the small vehicle and was wondering what was afoot here. When he was told that it was a field refit she was quite impressed. She offered a deal: an arena match between 4 of the Hunter refuits (she refused to call them Lions) and 2 medium battlemechs of her choosing. The rewards were significant, but Commander Curd refused since he did not want to risk the lives of his crew just for sport. If it was a military operation it was ok, but not for the entertainment of holovid masses. The match was scheduled as a private one, but Curd still refused.

Defiance offered a solution in the form of an advanced remote control system, that would allow the tanks to be operated from a Skulker command center. That was another thing, and an idea for further improving the tanks for direct combat crew-less operations, so Curd agreed as long as Defiance paid the bill. The hard negotiation ended up with a farther reaching agreement, with Defiance willing to supply the Irian Fists with Hunter chassis in the future if the project proved successful. Defiance would also provide access to 3 command vehicles, similar to the famous Skulkers of JES.

2 weeks later, 4 Lions entered a closed up arena and found that their 160 tons were facing the might of an Orion K and a Dragon. 135 tons all in all.  The arena terrain was quite broken with a lot of tall unstable stone towers. This worked to the tank’s advantage, since the mechs had problems getting up the stone spines to get a high ground bonus on the tanks.

The first shots went to the mechs, with glancing missile hits hitting Lion 3. Using cover and their superior numbers, the tanks spread to maximize cover and started bombarding the enemy mechs. Keeping the initiative, they managed to present different tanks to the enemy return fire, and slowly but surely they hit the Orion with repeated PPC and SRM shots from several angles. An ammo explosion downed the wounded 75 ton monster, but not before he brought a stone spire crashing down on Lion 2. Once the Dragon was alone it was not a match for a trio of PPC armed tanks running circles around it. Lion 1 was destroyed as well when the dragon jumped on it, and Lions 3 and 4 had several hits each (Lion 4 being immobilized) but they brought down the Dragon. At the base there was much rejoicing and when Richard Fields and Borja farm emerged from the Skulker they were celebrated as heroes by their company mates.

Olga Palau, Defiance Industries’ representative seemed satisfied with the result as well, and left the stipulated rewards in the Irian’ warehouses as well as the stipulated payment for their services. They were forbidden to divulge the footage of the match but you cannot prevent troops from boasting and talking when on a celebration bar crawl, and the next morning Captain Curd had a few offers of interest on his table to choose from as the Irian’s first mercenary experiences.

[This was actually a fairly difficult battle. We allowed the PC to keep the initiative throughout, but it is clear that the points of the mechs are way more efficient than the points of fighting vehicles; at least this is our impression. Or heavy units are better. Nothing to worry about in a mech-centric universe, but the points equilibrium seems to be somewhat biased. They won, but barely, and the Game Master was not really playing hard on them, but hey. We will have to keep that in mind for future engagements since this was a 92 vs 71PV battle, and the mechs could have won easily. The ammo explosion on the Orion and retaining initiative throughout the match were very important here. It helped the players see that they are far from invincible in any case, and was an interesting exercise for a quick mid-week gaming session in a bar with a few pencils and sheets of paper; it also showed that we do not need a full gaming table to play Alpha Strike from a RPG point of view :)].

Don't sweat the heavy APCs... that just means you'll have sufficient transport when you add enough AsTechs to actually do the maintenance on all those vehicles...

Onlyu one

Only one mech so far, and it is cockpit-less :P The PC have getting a cockpit for the vindicator and a pilot for it as part of their "to do" list, but no definitive actions so far. I might have to remind them that they have a contact with one of the major mech builders in the IS, but hey, time will tell.

I guess that this will be done more as a narrative tool in any case, but I do not need heavy APC for this. Normal APC should be enough right?

Things they have in their plate right now:
1. Decide on which mercenary contract to pursue.
2. Repair the vindicator (PPC + cockpit)
3. Find a pilot for the vindicator (or train a PC to pilot a large fighting machine when they were firing form a Hunter supprt tank a few weeks ago; no easy feat)
4. Convert all vehicles to remote control, leaving a buch of their Irian artillerymen jobless in the process.
5. Use the now-jobless artillerymen to build up a second infantry platoon.

I think that 4 and 5 will be interesting, even if the players have not anticipated the problems that automation will have in their home front :P

whether its mechs or busted vehicles you are still needing to haul techs and parts to the damaged vehicles unless you buy some haulers

as to the now surplus crew, shazam, they are astechs, they already know
the maintenance of the vehicles and weapons, actually if you set it up like the
drone controls in the old 3025 stuff, one crewman can simply handle each vehicle remotely and that frees up the PCs to do command stuff from normal vehicles
you could simply build all the controls into a cargo module and it can be based at the unit's base or be in the cargo bay of the dropship, other techs can pilot recon drones, those Ferrets will make good drones and you can add a remote sensor dispenser to drop around the area

Another reason to keep the Heavy APCs: more cargo!  As 20 ton vehicles, they can strap 20 tons to the roof in addition to space not used under the armor.  10 ton APCs, only get 10 tons plus what's not used.  Since you have mostly 25 ton tanks, it makes sense to have vehicles capable of hauling their shot up carcasses away...

After refits they are 35-40 ton vehicles, but I see what you are saying. Ok. Will keep the heavy APC. Converting the artillery guys as astechs will surely be less problematic than turning them into PBI. We will see what happens Sunday afternoon :)

SESSION 3. Bandits, Ginseng and PPC in Alphecca

Several PC and several dozen NPC were having a major hangover morning while Captain Curd and the major staff (lieutenants and up) were discussing the options for a new contract. One of the Lieutenants was puking in the bathroom for most of the discussion and didn’t say much. The other PC and NPC looked at the options.

A. Deniable target destruction. A merc unit wanted another mercenary storehouse to suffer some kind of damage. Reasons why undisclosed.

B. Escort duty in Galatea. Some mech parts needed to be delivered intact to the purchaser, and they were having trouble with another mercenary unit. It smelled of “trap” from miles away.

C. Problem with some bandits in Alphecca, a backwater Lyran planet 1 jump away from Galatea. The local militia (2 mechanised formations in dire straits) refuses to deal with the problem since it includes at least one mech, probably more and the threat is not THAT massive to the local population. Their only attempts to deal with the problem resulted in several armour assets and some VTOLS destroyed. Since the bandits are not a threat to the major industries or cities of the country, they let them be.

D. Continue with tests of weaponry and remote control for Defiance Industries in a Galatea shooting range.

Being a usual gamer group, option D was discarded in the first 10 seconds of discussion. A and B were interesting, but both were in Galatea, and they wanted to go abroad. Galatea duty is not top notch in your CV in their opinion (I disagree, but hey).

So we played an adventure created by abou, a fellow forum member. You can find it in this link:
https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=57579.0

The players decided to do “adventure” D as well, so they left some resources behind at Defiance Industries’ firing range. This is an excuse to run 2 adventures one after the other if they fancy it :) They agreed to ask Defiance to help repair the Vindicator as part of the payment. 4 Lions, 2 ferrets and an infantry platoon were dedicated to this.

So they went to Alphecca. They landed in Rubekka, one of the island continents of the planet and were met with a local liaison of the continental government (the ones paying for it). He had a grudge with the planetary government not dealing with the problem. “We also pay our taxes, you know”. Given that the central government was not paying, the local population had put forward the resources to hire an external unit. Money could only pay for a mech-less force like theirs, but they hoped that they could still deal with the treat.

The players deployed 6 Lions, 4 Hunters, 2 ferrets and 2 Warriors, 1 infantry platoon in hovercraft, 2 HQ skulkers and 2 Saracens as well as several supply vehicles. The mountainous area was not well suited for hover operations, so they acquired several unarmored jeeps for recon and infantry transport and mounted HMG and other small weaponry on them.

We played a multi-character adventure here. Having 40+ people in the field it seemed strange that the high command echelons would be the ones doing legwork for example, so the players played characters fromn the infantry/recon units as well as the Lieutenants in charge of the operation.

Apparently the bandits had at least one mech. Asking for more specifications it appeared to be a shadow hawk, but some other reports talked about what seemed to be a locust as well.

The infantry and recon unit were used to do legwork and finds out stuff about the bandits in the local area. They did not seem to be abusing the local population THAT much, but were still a pain in the ass. Basically they were going after supplies coming from the mountains in pickups and armed with small weapons. If the local population did not cow in front of bully tactics they would send the mech (or mechs) to do damage to infrastructure. Most of their activity seem to be off world, though. Lately they had also started asking for protection money, and here is where the local merchants banded together to get rid of them.

The HQ were directed to an old Japanese merchant. Supposedly he had info on the bandits, but they were not able to get past the pleasantries phase with him.

In a bar, a trio of the Irian infantry grunts (Allard, Bernard and Carlyle) had a fistfight with a pair of thugs “protecting” the place, and they managed to get information from one of the workers. With that info, there was a successful recon of an old mine complex, where it was determined that there was a significant bandit presence. The tanks were called in, and an ambush was set. The bandits had pickups and a VTOL. Those were destroyed rapidly. After that the identified a Shadow Hawk and the Locust emerged from the premises and there was a scuffle with them. The Locust managed to escape towards the mountains, but it was tailed by the Ferrets at a sensible distance. The Shadow Hawk put up a significant fight and smacked a Lion towards the refit yard, but was badly mauled. The techs are not sure if they can salvage it after the amount of missiles and PPC hits it took.

At this point, the players did something unexpected and instead of sending all their assets in to finish the bandits, they sent a Ferret with speakers and a message of “join us” for the bandits (with the implicit “or die” as a cue). I made them roll for it. 12. The bandits agreed! They found that the bandits had an operational Locust and Stinger. They might get a lance in brief! Both mechs were in need of heavy overhauls, and the pilots did not look like real PROs mechwarriors, but those are 2 mechs! Light and badly aged, but 2 mechs! The rest of the pirate band were around 40 people. They suspect that Captain Curd will send them packing since they look like troublemakers, but hey.

And they headed back to Galatea the merrier.

Yeah, they used sensible tactics for once. I am quite amazed by that, really, since they tend to charge headlong into dragon lairs and orc breeding pits in other games. They ambushed the bandit pickups and then moved to have a quite well planned crossfire against the mechs with the vehicles in a hull down position or out of sight. I doubt this will repeat itself :P

The Shadow hawk is a total loss, but they do not know it yet. But yeah, they have assembled a quasi-lance in less time than I thought. Now they need to repair and contract Mechwarriors for the machines. Not cheap when you already have around 100 people in your unit (around 50 combatants) plus 20-ish combat vehicles and supporting stuff.

“...and with these changes and long range remote controls for the new Lions medium tanks we end up having enough free people to have a second infantry platoon”.

The lieutenants looked very satisfied with themselves after going after the roster of the Iron Fists and the options their new sponsor had opened for them. The only one that looked unsure was chief engineer Roderick Square. He scratched his head and said something weird. “Have we asked the artillerymen about this?”.

A heavy silence fell on the room (and the players looked at the GM suspiciously). “What do you MEAN with that?”. “Dunno boss, maybe they do not WANT to become infantry”.

Fearing what was about to happen, the players convened an (ex-)artillerymen meeting. The result was quite disastrous. Among other things because the PC did not seem to be talking to people but to an asset. (After the meeting I pointed it out and they felt terrible since 2 of them work in a syndicate :P)

The result was that the artillerymen declared a strike AND since the Lions were part of the Defiance Industries contract, but the Hunters were not, they occupied all 6 of them. In a sense they became an infantry platoon, since they took up arms, but did so against their employers. They were menacing to leave the company and do so with their job assets (including the Fury dropship!).

The situation was only defused with heavy negotiation and a promise to keep the hunters operating as regular vehicles. Might be more dangerous but since they were not supposed to be frontline vehicles the crew did not seem to care that much. There was also a promise to make the Hunter complement grow. And a (small) pay rise.

Considering that this could have escalated badly, I think they got away from it quite OK. One of the players was going to activate the lions to fire on the striking/defecting artillerymen (!).

After this funny little scene that lasted for around 1.5 hours of game time, we went to talk with Ms. Palau at Defiance Industries’ offices to negotiate (cough*beg-on-their-sorry-knees*cough*) for more Hunters. She raised an eyebrow, but agreed for the small price of an increase of their debt with the company. “Debt” is a really bad word, so the GM reduced it by calling a favour. They were to escort some Defiance Industries’ supplies through an area of Galatea that was prime territory for ambushes. The Hunters would be coming in a few weeks (once we finish this track). They dedicated 4 Lions, the VTOLs (with infantry in them) and some supply vehicles as well as the 3 Saracens. Half of the VTOLS were riding on the roof of some of the heavy trucks in order to conserve fuel.

The first 2 days of route saw no action or signs of any enemy. On the third day, a barrage of LRM missiles hit the leading Lion told them otherwise. The VTOL pilots must have been sleeping the previous night’s revelry, since they had not seen A FREAKIN ORION, as well as some infantry forces moving LRM artillery pieces to the road. The Orion was not brand new for sure, but it looked and acted perfectly functional. The Lions (controlled from one of the Saracens) returned fire, but with very bad accuracy. The previous night’s revelry must have been epic. The Ferrets took to the sky to try to bring their infantry to the fight.

When they were saying “well, it is only 1 mech and we have superior numbers, a blackjack and a Locust appeared o their flank, followed by a trio of Scorpions. One of the Defiance trucks being hit and going up in flames was the warning to their presence. The 4 lions divided in pairs. 2 of them went after the Orion, while the other 2 engaged the Locust. The VTOLS went after the Orion and infantry as well, with the warrior and 2 of the Saracens tried to keep the Blackjack busy.

Once they got nearer the hangover seemed to lift, and adrenaline kick in. The Lions engaged the tanks. The Locust was made to flee rather fast, and one of the Scorpions was up in flames, but one of the Lions was disabled as well, and one of the ferrets shot down. Fortunately, the infantry had already disembarked and was engaging in a short-range firefight with the enemy infantry.

The fire discipline of the infantry and the unrelenting fire of the mechs on the transports made clear that these were no amateurs, and despite their ragtag dress code they seemed extremely professional. This was a planned ambush for THIS convoy, not a random pirate raid! When the 4th truck went up in flames it was quite evident that they were not transporting the construction supplies that Defiance claimed either. Feeling used, the players fought with more focus, and managed to down the 2 other Scorpions and damage the Blackjack significantly. At that point the enemy retreated leaving 2 Lions, a Ferret and a Saracen smoking, and 2 more Lions needing to be towed home. The infantry was also needing replacements and hospital beds, but not that many.

They reached the rendezvous point a day later and were planning on not so nice word to be told to Olga when they returned to Galatea City.

After the operation, assets are as follows:

OPERATIONAL
1 Manticore
3 operational Lions
4 Hunters
2 Saracens
2 squads of infantry
3 APC
3 Ferrets
2 Warriors
3 Skulkers
Support trucks and J27s

OUT OF ACTION
3 Lions needing patching after the escort duty + 2 Hunters being converted to Lions. Aparently
1 Infantry squad (KIA and wounded people)
1 Vindicator (no Mechwarrior)
1 Locust (no Mechwarrior)
1 Stinger (no Mechwarrior)

Equipment lost so far:
3 Lions
1 Hunter
1 Saracen
1 Ferret

Xavier Curd was making a stone face. Across the table he had his 3 senior armor lieutenants.

“So, you went out last night, had a ravenous bar crawl with some of our tankers, met a mechwarrior from that fighting mech holovid series that you like. What was it? Ah yeah, Fusion Hearts in Steel Skin. After some drinks and a rbar brawl that I have to pay the damages of, you liked her so much that you offered her a contract downloaded from our internal database and she signed it right away? This is how it went?”

“Yes boss”. The characters do not look so grinning and confident in themselves anymore.

“Remind me, what is the name of that pilot?”

“Divine Aweesome boss. Diva for short.”

“So we have a Diva Awesome. And you also agreed to allow her to name our Vindicator Oriental Stupendous Glitter?”

Silence in the room and shifty feet.

“Is she any good?” continues Curd.

“Well…. we guess so”.

“You guess so? At least she is good in your holovids?

“Well, she is not exactly one of the fighting stars there”

Curd raises an eyebrow and, in his mind, punches his subalterns in the face . Does not allow it to show. Not too much at least.

“But she is a mechwarrior, right?”

“She knows how to pilot.”

Curd raises the eyebrow a little further up.

“You see, boss, Diva is one of the starring singers in the cast and one of the story movers. She is really important in the series. But she is not one of the main fighters.”

“Holy Irian.” Curd never swears. So they know that they have messed up.

After a few moments of really tense silence Curd continues. “Well, I guess we are stuck with her for the next (Curd looks at his memo)… eh, 5 years. We better go and hear what our first mechwarrior will be like. Lieutenant Fields, remind me about the present conversation next time you ask for a raise. Remember that Mrs Awesome will be the best paid member of our whole unit, including the dropship captains and myself.”

He would like to yell and berate them for what they had done until he was blue in the face, but apparently the contract was legal AND it had already appeared in the press. And they needed a pilot for the vindicator. Crap.

Yup, some failed rolls in a bar crawl scene ended with that. Next session we will see how good Divine and Glitter are.
They PC also plan for the lance to be called Awesome's Amazings and paint them like My Little Ponny mechs, but they decided not to break the idea with their captain yet.

Does Diva actually know how to pilot a mech, or does she just look great in a bikini. :D ;D
I wish I could get a good grip on reality, then I would choke it.

Richard Fields sees Borja Farm turn the corner of the vehicle bay walking extremely fast. He grabs Richard by the arm and pulls him. In the near distance Roderick Square, the head engineer, yells like a madman. “We should better be going. Roderick is in a very bad mood.”

“What happened?”

“Diva asked him to paint the Vindicator fuchsia with glitter varnish so that she can look good in her new show. He also refuses the name she suggested for the machine”
“Her new show??!?”

“Yeah. Remember the support personnel she added in her contract? They are a recording trivid team. With TV van and drone cameras included. And 2 hairdressers”.

“Holy crap.”

“Yeah. Curd is gonna eat us for lunch when he learns about it. I hear the first meeting of the boss with Diva was not great, and this will not make things easier…”.

----------
Xavier Curd and Roderick Square were looking at the screens of the training center of Defiance Industries. The simulator cameras showed several images of the training pod battlefield. The camera of the newly repaired VND-1 “Glitter” (even if Square refused to accept that name), that of the 6 tanks, and several general views of the battlefield. The Vindicator in the image was a bright pink color, even if the one in the garage was still mate black.

“Well, she is quite good with the PPC”

“Yeah, but she moves… weird. Not bad, just weird. Is the Vindi trying to move her hips in a sexy way?”

It was right. She was. As they said it the Vindicator arrived at a cliff. She put her back to the cliff, a good cover move. And then the 45-ton machine stretched against the cliff bending a knee and a raising an arm above her head while tilting her head at the same time. It was not that she was not gaining good cover doing so (she was actually surprisingly well covered), but it was… disturbing to see it.

“Luckily the trivid annoyers are not recording it”.

During the exercise the Vindicator and her team of 2 Lions piloted by Farm won against the 4 Lion tanks of Fields. The superior targetting and targeting of Farm's team were the main responsible for that than the presenc eof the Vindicator, burt Curd and Roderick and Xavier were quite convinced that this is not their last recruit would see it.

They were right.

Quick resume, since I have been unable to keep up.

The next game seasons have seen the Irian Fists deal with several issues.

1. Train Diva so that she is more integrated in the unit. Mission failed. She *is* a diva and has a running enemity with Richard Fields that has prompted Richard to request NOT being deployed with Diva in future misisons (basically, same player for both characters). Diva still has to face her first real combat assignment.

2. Command dealt with the artillerymen's strike by negotiating to get MOAR normal Hunters from Defiance Industries. And yup, debt kept going up. If Defiance asks for something they will need to say "yes!".

3. The Irian Fists were missing their families. The bad thing here is that the Free Worlds Leagfue is a league of free worlds, but its population is not necessarily free herself, and cannot move freely out of the League. So they needed to go back to irian and retrieve them. HPG traffic between the Fists and their families were heavy, and some were not willing to move out. Communication with some contacts in the local garrisson was also fairly active, even if more discrete. The operation when carried out was mostly successful. The Fury was used to retrieve the people while a contracted aerospace unit (the Lightning Screechers) and the infantry in the ferrets provided cover along with the saracens. The families had to be picked up from 3 different staging areas in the planet and transported to a secure staging area where the Intruder was waiting.

2 of the 3 pickings were easy and uneventful, but the third was intercepted by a light mech mercenary unit that had no moral ties with the Irian fists at all, and the Irians were unsuccessful in driving them out despite the good job of the Lightning Screechers. One saracen and one ferret were lost in the ooperation when their pilots took agressive (read: suicidal) action to save civilians from mercenary fire. That meant that some families were unable to be picked up and were left behind, probably facing some kind of increased scrutiny from the irian authorities as potential troublemakers. Despite the success of the 2 other pickups that left a feeling of defeat in the unit. An immediate operation tu pick up the remaining families was ruled out, so other approaches would need to be decided.

The techs and HQ looked as the Phoenix Hawk's wreck was towed into the intruder. the way the mission had gone was disastrous enough. 5 Lions laid smoking in the field, and only the rapid retreat oif the rest of the incursion's assets had saved them. However, there was a single bright side to the murderous and effective fire of the defending mech force that massacred them. A too eager phoenix hawk pilot had gone ahead too much in front of his companions, and kept pressing them when fire from the Saracens had crippled his Valkyrie companion. That meant that when the Phooenix hawk lost its leg to a PPC shot, it was alone and could be swarmed by infantry and captured.

The HQ hoped that this would allow them to somewhat recover from a really bad mission, where "just a company of green garrison infantry" had turned out to be a reinforced strike lance of medium mechs: 2 centurions, 1 catapult, 1 phoenix hawk and an enforcer. The murderous fire of the 2 Centurions and enforcer, and the supporting PPC Catapult had been too much for the Lions and their supporting Hunters. Their hit and run action to destroy an ore refinery had been turned into an unwanted sluggfest where they lost half their tank assets in one go. Diva had been the target of the enemy fury during the first compasses of the battle, but they turned their attention to the tanks when it became clear that she was not the most dangerous treat.

The vindicator limped into the Intruder claiming the undeserved attention she had attracted and suffered (without complains, she added) but in fact was one of the least damaged vehicles in the force. Diva was quite deft at avoiding damage in fact. Both taking it and dealing it.

So it was a failed mission even if the enforcer should be scrap by now and one of the Centurions would be long months in the repair area with a hefty bill. They were unable to take down their target. Thankfully their finances were well enough (barely) to be able to recover from such a hit. Once. If the bad stuff repeated they would be in dire straits.

Everybody in the unit was extremely happy that the tanks were radio controlled.

Boy is this my kind of Battletech.  Start with some good but common vehicles, labor disputes, good decisions and imagination from the players, realistic modifications for the vehicles, etc. Breath of Fresh Air  over the adventures that have the good guys driving Captured Timber Wolves by the third post  :D .
