So, I came up with this fanfic idea that a bunch of old warships were given to various local Terran governments as party favors/promises to not bombard them.  And these would go on to have various long and noted careers, until the Amaris Coup happens...at which case, their long history might reveal that some of them, not being expeditionary craft, have been trading cargo volume for other things.

Let's start with MNSS Clemenceau.  A block one Aegis, we'll give it the standard coat of Ferro-carbide they all picked up, and replace the white shark launchers with AR10s.  We then consult the big book of French designs and decide that a Tertiary and Quaternary battery are needed-so we're gonna add AMS and anti-fighter defenses.  A lot of AMS, because the Quaternary battery is very important.  Like, 20 AMS per firing arc, that's how many AMS we're putting on this thing.  And pulse lasers and SSRMs for the tertiary battery because Star League Baby!

Next up, the Nigerian Space Craft Al-Sudan, is one of the most comprehensive refits of any warship in the Terran National Navies, because it rips out the original engines and installs new, higher power engines that allow for absolutely absurd 3 G acceleration and enhanced hull framing to take up the slack in the design.  It also adds a small but significant AMS system, just big enough to be a tripwire.  The ship's quarters get a slight upgrade for VIPs and admiralty staff, but in terms of weapons, the Al-Sudan is pretty much just a normal Quixote class frigate-just with enough speed to match a Lola.

You may find the next one less great-because the PRC (Liberal Democracy One Party State since 2023) have the single worst idea for a refit in all the fleets.  You see, they realized around the time that the Soyal class was being floated, that they could fit a light mass driver on their flagship the Cao Cao.  But they wanted to keep people off the tail of the refit Riga class frigate as well.  Their solution was to create a mobile Kessler Cascade by fitting no less than 47 minelaying pods to the aft of their flagship.  Referred to by many as the 'War Crimes Frigate, the Cao Cao also has improved internal framing to brace it's new main gun, but doesn't mount comparable armor to increase it's durability, instead bringing a single light marine company for internal security and counter-boarding.

The upgrade to the Indian flagship has been delayed by accidentally closing MML when the design was finished.  So instead, I'm making the American Vincent Refit.  A class that can be summed up with this quote from the Matrix.

"So what will you need?  besides a miracle..."
"Guns.  Lots of guns."

How about 10 Barracudas instead of 2?  How about capital lasers instead of large lasers?  A couple naval gauss rifles?  HOW MANY GUNS IS ENOUGH GUNS???

Well, about 18.2% guns by wet-mass.  A thousand tons more fuel.  And not a PINCH more armor.

I did warn you, it's a big book!  As for the why-I made a whole RNG chart and the french shipbuilders got 'Slightly cursed' as their option.  So they played a game of Tumblehome for a bit before actually desigining the refit :P.

Given the backstory there are actually multiple options for sponsoring a Russian ship, depending on whether they have the economic clout to do so. You could justify both the oligarch's mega-yacht and the poorly maintained communist propaganda piece!

A minor quibble, I'm not sure the PRC would exist, at least as the PRC, by the time WarShips were around?  Canonically, Republican China annexed Hong Kong, and later when Elias Liao launched his terror campaign, he figured Beijing was a valid target, and it was Republican Chinese commandoes that launched the raid to capture him. It kinda feels like the implication is that the two Chinas somehow re-integrated with the Republicans on top.

Then again, by this point in the timeline, Nationstates themselves would no longer exist having been disbanded by McKenna and their administrations turned into the regional governments of the Hegemony. This is already a major AU for the Hegemony.

Yeah, in this timeline the PRC undergoes major liberalization in 2023, holds singapore/Japan style elections where minority parties get maybe 30% of the vote, and then joins the Terran Alliance before the Deimos Project kicks off.  And then when McKenna takes over, the Communist Party's right wing (by now pretty not communist but unable to change their name for branding purposes) sides with him for nationalist pride and because he promises them a Warship of their very own Soon(tm).

Hong Kong doesn't remain an independent micro-state for 200 years in the face of One China policy from both sides, come on.

And yes, the entire point of this is that in order to get the nation states to agree to McKenna's reforms, he has to placate various power groups, just like he left the House of Windsor on the throne of Great Britain.  James McKenna himself never delivered any of his warship promises, and India got theirs first-and only after he was dead.

And speaking of India, I want to ask you a question:  What's just the nastiest upgrade you can give a Black Lion block 1 to make it a more effective low-orbit brawler?  Well, I thought it over and decided that NAC40s were the way to go.  I could have gone a bit more extreme but I decided to hold back on converting the ship entirely from expeditionary warship to super-BC, and anyways, it was already pretty nasty.  So I got rid of the anti-fighter ACs and put on something with some more kick.  Gauss rifles and ER LLs replace them, greatly increasing the anti-fighter punch.  The AMS grid is pretty leaky, but it would suffice to make it a bit harder to hit.

And if I ever wrote this up, the Lord Varuna, a ship given to a region of 2 billion to assure them they would never be bombed from orbit would do a lot of bombing from orbit with both regular NACs and with their 'special weapons locker.'  Turns out, nukes are easy to come by if you request DOME funding for 'mountain removal charges'.

That's probably because it's an older ship without a dedicated dropship collar, and thus it's required to protect itself a bit more.  And they probably can't afford the all-up protection that a Star League ship is supposed to be escorted by.
