Paint Pen discovery for minis free tip.
« on: 08 April 2024, 13:59:47 »
Hey I decided to share a tip for the general community. I have found that Paint Pens are a easy way to paint mechs. They usually last about one or two lances depending on the size and how much Paint you need to use for the crevices. Great for travel. If you are driving or waiting for some reason they are easy to just pick up a plastic plate and paint.
Easy to combine colors with
I have been working on this on weekends.

The good:
Beginner friendly. Like extremely beginner friendly.
Easy application
Some really good colors: metallic purple, bright OJ, bright green, bright red, metallic red, metallic blue, pink and Black ⚫️.
One coat. That's right one coat. No prime coat necessary.
Other paints will adhere to them.
Much more inexpensive than other methods.
Easy to make parade patterns with that are in Battletech.

Cons: Need to focus on one coat application. Brighter green and green may need a white application.
The white paint pen takes 3x longer than any other color.
The white paint pen will result in lost detail.
Some paints are thicker than other applications.

Overall though I'm pretty happy with say getting $20 sets and just using that set.

I'm really glad to hear this.

I only just heard of PaintPens recently.

And the first thing I thought of w/ them was getting panel lines done.

A couple decades ago a very good painter showed me how he did things like skull eyeballs or armor lines by using an ink pen & letting some of it leak down into the cracks.

This was a total WHAT?!?!?! moment for me, what can I say, I'm not a good painter & I hadn't done much research.

When I saw some kids using paint pens I asked about them & I was like wow, that could be used for more than "lining".

Good to know they work so well on the entire mech.

Sort of surprising that the white covers badly. White is the most opaque color and should cover the best. I suppose to get it to flow properly maybe they have to have a low pigment to medium ratio. (White pigment tends to be very large) Supplementing white pens with white paint or white ink and a brush might be good.

I use acrylic pens at times. Lots of variation in the various brands in both price and pigment density.
