Oh, I see some great potential here!  Heck, actually have the torso of an AS7-D welded onto the turret ring of a vehicle frame.  With most of the engine compartment and cockpit and such pretty much hollow.  Inspire some shock and awe on a budget when the enemy sees it moving around out behind a hill. >:D

I think half a ton of armor is worth it to put the AC20 in a turret, never mind the massive drop in production cost or the transport weight drop
Will try and have Locust and Atlas ones up soon

Looking back, there's room for improvement -- like maybe dropping a ton of armor for more ammunition, and/or tweaking said armor's distribution some more in any case --, but it does nicely demonstrate that you can in fact basically put a Crusader's full armament on a tank no heavier than the 'Mech itself, if at the cost of some speed.

Nice, I like it! How about moving the LRM15s to the front? That will free up 1.5tons for ammo and armor.

Honestly hadn't considered it, but it's an option. If I'm going to front-mount anything (other than a small point-defense gun for tradition's sake, that is), it may as well be the long-range part of my arsenal -- it's only at shorter ranges that the turret's ability to compensate for attempts to outmaneuver me suddenly becomes vital, and LRMs in particular start to suffer at those distances anyway. I'd probably invest the difference in another ton of ammo -- either LRMs for better fire support or else SRMs for the inferno option -- and eight more points of armor reinforcing the front.

Officially, no. However, Tech Base isn't the same as rules level. Total Chaos and other publications make it clear that you have "Introductory" tech vehicles, which have different costs and needs than Tournament/Standard tech vehicles.

Well, "tech base" to my understanding to date is simply either Inner Sphere or Clan. The rules level then governs (among other things) how much of that base's tech you actually have access to. Things like your force's "Tech Rating", if I read the Chaos Campaign PDF right, are then something else altogether...and not necessarily related to the "Tech Rating" the TechManual construction rules would assign to each of your units in turn, either.

So...yeah, it gets just a tad confusing. ;)

Yeah, that's not what I'm talking about though. If you want to purchase a new vehicle, you have to first figure out if it is a Tournament/Standard rules vehicle, or Introductory. The costs for purchasing such a unit are different, depending on the...well, I don't rightly know what to call it. Tech Thingie?! :)

So you can have "Introductory" vehicles. They just can't be used with the Introductory boxed set.  ;D

Okay the other two designs I mentioned earlier, this first one shows you why a Locust is a bad design, this has the same specs but is 1/5 the price and 1/3 the transport weight, so you can easily carry 3 of these for a single Locust, thus if you lose one it's not as big a hit, you still have more scouts and it costs less to replace plus it's harder to mission kill

Yeah, that's not what I'm talking about though. If you want to purchase a new vehicle, you have to first figure out if it is a Tournament/Standard rules vehicle, or Introductory. The costs for purchasing such a unit are different, depending on the...well, I don't rightly know what to call it. Tech Thingie?! :)

So you can have "Introductory" vehicles. They just can't be used with the Introductory boxed set.  ;D

Hmmm...would that mean I could also have "introductory" battle armor? After all, there are some suits around that nominally only use intro-level weaponry... :D

Really, though, I wouldn't quite know how to list that sort of thing. If the intro-level rules don't cover a particular unit type, I can't then very well note said units' "rules level" as introductory, and apparently we don't actually have another convenient shorthand for what we mean here -- if one wants to be strict about it, then technically "intro-level" vehicles do in fact use equipment that's not in the intro box, it's just in the form of integral components (like motive system, controls, and turrets) that kind of sneak in under the radar until they're suddenly supposed to take critical hits or something...which only Total Warfare tells you how to handle. ;)

You hit it in a nutshell. It's one of my issues with the way that units are classified. I always thought Introductory/Standard (or Tournament)/Advanced/Experimental seemed simple. It isn't though, as they have since complicated it. Your BA point is a solid one, and one I've wondered about myself. It's interesting that MegaMek seems to use the whole "Introductory" vehicle thing as well. Perhaps this would have been a whole lot easier if they had called the boxed set a "Starter" box set. :)

Had rules level simply been techbase (Intro/Standard/etc), it would be a whole lot easier. Although, that would lead to interesting questions about Clan "Introductory." :D
