I think the decision of which book to get is best made on the bias of who you are likely to play with.

If your group prefers  D&D or simpler, destiny. Pathfinder up, ATOW. In-between is a judgement call

Really, the rule ought to be "play whatever your group and you like". Like Destiny? Play Destiny. Like ATOW? Play ATOW. Like Traveller, SIEGE Engine, Mekton Z, 5e, Starfinder, Mophidius? Make a Battletech conversion. Like FATAL? Seek professional psychiatric help.
