"Baby Lakshmi" Escort Dropships

Introduction:

Considering the good reception that my Lakshmi-class pocket warships received and their good combat performance, I decided to create a version in a more "realistic" tonnage. In order to satisfy the fans of various factions, I created faction-specific variants along with fluff explaining how they were obtained.

I had a blast designing, testing and fluffing up these designs. I hope that they serve you well regardless of affiliation and inspire you to explore the possibilities inherent in first-rate pocket warships.

As always, a disclaimer: I do these designs by hand; I do not have nor use HMA, so I would appreciate it that if anyone plugs them into HMA, feel free to post the readout in this thread.

Sarienne Class (Lyran Alliance) - the original

Overview:

With the successful performance of the Lakshmi-class pocket warships, the Lyran Admiralty wanted to acquire more in order so supplement their depleted warship fleet. However, the post-civil war economy simply couldn't afford to devote resources to 70,000-ton pocket warships when those construction facilities and materiel were needed for rebuilding the existing fleet. Seeking alternatives, an open call was made among the Alliance's shipbuilding community for designs that could approximate the performance of the Lakshmi II's yet be constructed using far fewer resources.

Several companies submitted designs, but one was of particular interest: Sebastian Verma, owner of Maharajah Shuttlewrights (MSW) in New India - a small surface manufacturing shipyard specializing in smaller civilian dropships and small craft - proposed a versatile spheroid design capable of being manufactured on a planetary surface. His design had been originally submitted for the DWX project but rejected in favour of PSL's Lakshmi design and he saw this as a means of vindicating his vision. With a little political pressure, the LAAF selected the design and recognizing that MSW needed time to upgrade their facilities, granted manufacturing license to two other Alliance shipyards to build two ships each: Las Marias Shipping, Ltd. (LMS) in Ender's Cluster (noted for building long-range bulk carriers, selected for their lowest bid; two ships for little more than the price of one) and Semier Datatron (SDT) in Tharkad (builders of several prominent dropship designs; selected for their fastest delivery estimates).

Capabilities:

Matching the Lakshmi's 4G maximum thrust, the Sarienne class's armour is capable of withstanding a hit from major capital weapons bays without failing. It's primary armament consists of an array of four AR-10 launchers and six CTB-20 "Barracuda" launchers, together capable of delivering a wide array of missiles at maximum ranges, from anti-fighter to nuclear anti-shipping. Backing up the capital missiles is an impressive array of heavy gauss, capable of delivering capital-grade damage on any target. A series of light anti-fighter laser turrets cover all arcs along with anti-missile guns. A pair of Artemis-equipped LRM-20 racks cover the aft quarters, where AR-10's are not present.

The Sariennes carry a compliment of six fighters and two small craft along with enough fuel for multiple sorties. Unlike the Lakshmis, no passenger or marine facilities are present, but crew quarters and facilities are ample and comfortable. The ship itself is capable of long term deployment, though its fuel stores are intended to be supplemented by tankers every five months.

Deployment:

The WoB invasion of Tharkad severely delayed the construction of the SDT ships. Von Sarienne was undergoing engine trials when the WoB fleet arrived in-system. Quick thinking on the part of the crew and SDT administration transferred all costruction schematics, plans and data to the Vonsarienne, along with ammunition and the project engineers, in order to complete the ship at another location within the ARDC. With the liberation of Tarkhad, the Stephan (which had been misidentified as a cargo carrier by the invaders) was quickly completed and deployed.

Von Sarienne is part of an Invader Task Force along with a Buccaneer and a Union CV conversion. Stephan is assigned as escort to the Mjolnir's supply fleet, matched to a heavily modified Star Lord (replacing one collar for sub-capital weapons and other improvements) along with a Vengance CV two Claymore assault dropships and a Mule supply dropper.

Lyran Alliance Sarienne Class (3)

                                Class       Status:  Launch:    Built:
LADS Aiel Von Sarienne  (ED-05) Sarienne    Active    3069     Semier Datatron, Tharkad
LADS Brenda Stephan     (ED-06) Sarienne    Active    3072     Semier Datatron, Tharkad
LADS Adolph Stuttern    (ED-08) Sarienne    const.  Est. 3073  Las Marias Shipping, Utuado (Ender's Cluster)
LADS Mariano Kappatelis (ED-09) Sarienne(1) const.  Est. 3073  Las Marias Shipping, Utuado (Ender's Cluster)
LADS Nijal Salsabil(2)  (ED-10) Sarienne    const.  Est. 3074  Maharajah Shuttlewrights, New India

(1)Kappatelis has a "mirror image" configuration to all other ships of the class due to the
proprierary manufacturing methods developed by the LMS shipyard, which usually builds sub-
light bulk transports in pairs for use within the cluster.
(2)Salsabil is being constructed on the planetary surface using conventional techniques as
an experiment and as an exersise to boost the local economy. As a side effect, the ship
has a superb fit and "hand made" feel as well as numerous artistic touches and detailing,
making it one of the most beautiful ships in Lyran space.
(3)As with the Lakshmi Class, ships are named after important Lyran dropship commanders.

Combat History:

Von Sarienne's Task Force deployed during the capture of the LCS Invincible, keeping WoB reinforcements tied down and away from the site of the main battle.

She suffered minor armour damage but destroyed several squadrons of enemy light and medium fighters. During the battle, a WoB Leopard CV attempted to ram her, but failed and was subsequently incapacitated and captured.

Stephan has yet to see combat.

Magestrix-class (Magistracy of Canopus) – The First Stolen

Overview:

Within days of the LAAF accepting the design for production, MIM agents acquired a copy of the schematics and construction plans. The theft of data went unnoticed until the MAF launched the Kossandra. Despite thorough investigations by LIC and Loki, the actual leak could never be located.

Within the Magistracy, the contract to build the ships was awarded to Majesty Metals & MFG. (MMM), the most experienced shipyard with centuries of experience building Leopard-class dropships and to Nadine Pleasure Craft (NPC), a company that had never actually built a ship but which specialized in refurbishing and converting existing ships at their SL-era repair facilities at the Hardcore L1 point and at their shipyards on the Hardcore surface. Unlike MMM, NPC decided to make alterations to the original design in order to accommodate the lower tech levels of the Magistracy and to better suit their manufacturing capabilities and techniques. Within 18 months, NPC delivered the Kossandra from its orbital yards, followed by the Floral three weeks later (the delay caused by an “accident” which killed the assigned command crew on the planetary surface; Loki’s hand is suspected but unproven) from the surface yard. After trials, the MAF ordered an additional four ships constructed, two under contract for the Outworlds Alliance as part of overtures for a Pan-Periphery treaty and the last two for the MAF navy. A construction accident at the yards severely damaged the yards and completely destroyed the nearly complete ship being built there. Evidence pointed to Loki, but MIM suspected that this evidence was planted by agents from some other source. As a result, all personnel assigned to these ships as crew or building staff were carefully screened for loyalty, a step that may well have protected the nascent fleet from WoB subversion during the initial stages of the Jihad.

The MMM ship (unnamed; the MAF christens their ships at launch, keeping the name a secret in order to fuel speculation and gambling, of which the MAF and the shipyard takes a cut) has been redesigned several times and undergone many changes in materials but has still managed to remain far behind the NPC yards in delivery. Several deaths and disappearances have been attributed to possible assassins or sabotage. Officially, Loki (later WoB ROM) is suspected, but whispered voices say that MMM’s problems might be attributed more to local industrial espionage than to foreign nationals.

Capabilities:

Redesigned to accommodate local availability of resources, the Magestrix class differs significantly from the original Sarienne class, using 180 standard armour canted forward to offer equivalent frontal protection at the cost of weaker sides (2,520 pt. Total, 700/610/610 spread), 520 SHS, no ER or Artemis technology on their weapons, and replacing the AMS systems for HMG’s with a full ton of ammo each.

The biggest changes lie in the primary and secondary armaments: the Sarienne’s four AR-10’s are replaced by a Killer Whale in the nose, a Barracuda aft and a White Shark in each forward quarter (no change in overall missile type allocation) and the Heavy Gauss are all replaced by locally produced AC/10’s, reducing range and overall damage potential but allowing for ready ammo availability and better reliability. All these changes allow for cargo capacity to be increased by 838 tons.

These changes make for a strikingly distinct profile over the Sarienne’s; offering a somewhat elongated profile with additional reinforcement on the nose, quite reminiscent of early WarShip designs. Each ship has been given a unique and distinct paint scheme and crews compete against each other for the best “artistic experience” of their respective ships.

Magistracy of Canopus Magestrix Class (12)

                                   Class       Built:
CDS Kossandra Centralla  (DSD-01) Magestrix   Nadine Pleasure Craft, Hardcore (14)
CDS Floral Centralla     (DSD-02) Magestrix   Nadine Pleasure Craft, Hardcore (14)
CDS Coranna Centralla    (DSD-03) Magestrix   Nadine Pleasure Craft, Hardcore (14)
CDS (13)                 (DSD-06) Magestrix   Majesty Metals & MFG., Duncanshire (15)

(12)Ships named for past Magestrixes.
(13)Ship’s name yet to be revealed, speculated to be Lilandra Centralla.
(14)NPC, Hardcore has vast experience in customizing dropships and jump-
ships, but this is their first military contract. The ship’s appoint-
ments are unusually comfortable and include above-average recreational
    facilities for the crew.
(15)Duncanshire, the Magistracy’s most experienced shipbuilders, have had
no end of trouble bringing the ship to completion, going far overbudget
    and way behind schedule.

Victory-class (Federated Suns) – stolen from the thieves

Overview:

The theft of the plans by MIM operatives did not go unnoticed: Davion’s MI3 (Elilectronics Intelligence) intercepted a the transmission of the schematics as they were passed from one operative area to another; unable to determine who initiated the transmission (it was piggybacked in commercial traffic) or its ultimate destination (they were unable to trace it after it was retransmitted) and considering the post FCCW political climate, MI3 passed the information to their superiors and remained silent as LIC went ape trying to find out where the leak took place.

As the AFFS were desperately seeking to rebuild their strength, detailed plans for an easily built pocket warship seemed a godsend; the design was taken in secret to a naval architect for a drastic alteration of its external appearance and four ships were ordered from two different experienced shipyards: Tengu Aerospace and Federated-Boeing Interstellar of Galax. Local problems at Galax have delayed the launching of the Tikonov and have forced some minor changes in their passenger/crew accommodations.

Capabilities:

The Victory class matches the performance of the Sarienne in every way except its secondary armament: replacing the Lyran-centric Heavy Gauss Rifles with the darling of Davion designers: RAC/5’s, at a 1:1 ratio with a staggering total of 10,080 shots between them. In order to keep the hotter weapons from overwhelming the fire control system, a lighter computer array was combined with 168 additional double heat sinks to allow constant fire from all quarters simultaneously. 739.5 additional tons of cargo space were gained from the redesign, despite the shorter overall length.

Federated Suns Victory Class (4)

                               Class     Status:  Launch:    Built:
FSDS Capricorn Rift  (ADD-01) Victory    Active    3071     Tengu Aerospace, Sarna
FSDS Kafr Silim      (ADD-02) Victory    Trials    3072     Tengu Aerospace, Sarna
FSDS Latexo Moons (6)(ADD-03) Victory    Active    3071     F-B Interstellar, Galax
FSDS Tikonov (5)     (ADD-04) Victory A  const.  Est. 3073  F-B Interstellar, Galax

(4)Ships are named for naval battles where the FedSuns emerged victorious.
(5)Tikonov has been the target of sabotage and protests and so short-term
accommodations for a company of conventional marines and a platoon of
battlearmour have been provided on board.
(6)Latexo Moons has been assigned as a training ship for Armstrong Flight
   Academy’s warship program.

Beautiful Flowers-class (Draconis Combine) – the gift horse with braces

Overview:

When MI3 obtained the plans for the Sarienne class, they were cooperating with the ISF in a classified operation. As the ISF agents had found out that the MI3 operatives had obtained some kind of data, MI10 (with the blessings of the First Prince) included the plans as part of a secret intelligence data exchange. The ISF intended to simply keep the plans on file for when their navy finally faced a Sarienne (if ever), but the timing coincided with several political needs that required providing naval support to the Second Star League and to the FRR Exile movement. Unwilling to open DCMS shipbuilding advances to third parties, a fully developed set of plans revealing no secrets of the Dragon was perfect; A suitable alternative to the Lyran Gauss was required, but DC bay-mount Gauss Rifles were unsuitable in their stage of development for the class, so the Admiralty used a well developed alternative: Naval-Grade LRM-20 racks with advanced Artemis T&T equipment with enough missiles for 36 minutes of continuous fire from all its batteries. In keeping with DCMS doctrine, four additional fighter bays were installed along with eight second-class accommodations for the additional bay personnel and an extra 7 tons of cargo to stow extra supplies.

The new class was christened Migoto Kusabana, or “beautiful flowers” and two ships were originally ordered; one from the prestigious Galileo Instruments (GIS) yards and one from the new Rising Sun Yards (RSY) above Avon, built in place by the Smoke Jaguars and later captured and refit by DCMS and Star League personnel. Two months after the keel for AD-56 was laid at RSY, a second ship from the yard was ordered. This second ship, originally designated AD-57 was “loaned” to the FRR Exiles to serve as their flagship and was redesignated PW-01 while keeping its original name. Her senior officer compliment is completely comprised of DCMS officers and staff and most of her crew are FRR midshipmen and recent graduates from the Aerospace and Interstellar Institute of Midway, awaiting the day when they can “free their homeland from the yoke of the clans”.

Capabilities:

The change in armament and addition of more fighters has affected the way that this ship’s mission profile is viewed. Seen more as a command ship for assault dropship armadas (as opposed to a warship escort or surrogate warship), the flowers are not seen as vital parts of Admiralty doctrine. The only changes in appearance are minor cosmetic modifications and the large box-like “wings” that house the LRM launchers. This lack of dissimilarity has led Lyran observers to be suspicious of the origin of the design, but no proof has yet come to light.

Deployment:

Fire Tulip serves as training vessel at Midway and until the dissolution of the Second Star League, Panther Lily and Snow Orchid were assigned to the SLDF and used as dropship escorts and command ships in areas not patrolled by warships.

Draconis Combine Dangerous Flowers Class (7)

                              Class      Built:
DCDS Panther Lily    (AD-56) Flowers    Galileo Instruments, Schuyler
DCDS Snow Orchid     (AD-58) Flowers    Rising Sun Yards, Avon (8 )
FRRS Fire Tulip (9)  (PW-01) Flowers    Rising Sun Yards, Avon (8 )

(7)Ships of this class are named for flowers with notorious literary history.
(8 )New repair yards built by Clan Smoke Jaguar and captured by DCMS.
(9)On loan to FRR Kungsarme along with DCMS “advisers” as senior crew.

Harmony- class (Capellan Confederation) – Shield of the Knights

Overview:

When MIIO handed over their part of the data from the information exchange between MIIO and the ISF, they never dreamed that one of the ISF representatives was a double agent for the Maskirovka, who diligently copied the data and passed it on to her handlers. To be fair, the data on the Sarienne was incidental to the truly valuable data, but along with other lesser facets of the “prize” was passed along the chain of command and sent along to where it would do the most good for the Confederation. In this case, it was to the Bureau of Naval Procurement, who were trying to replicate the SL-era Pentagon escort dropships to better protect the CCAF’s Feng Huang cruisers. After suitable physical alterations that made the ship resemble a tall pagoda and a redesign to suit the availability of components in the Confederation, an initial order of three ships was made, named after famous speeches made by past Chancellors: the An Chung was named for Ilsa Liao’s 2813 “Harmonious Loyalty” speech on the aftermath of the Chesterton Disaster, which rallied together the CCAF and reestablished the trust of the people in the Chancellor; the Yung Jing was named for the “Eternal Mirror” speech made by Aleisha Liao in 2412 justifying her Ares Conventions to the CCAF; the Tieh Tieh celebrates the strength and beauty of the Capellan warrior woman in Tarlak Liao’s 2942 “Iron Butterly” speech rallying the CCAF in the face of near-defeat at the hand of the AFFS.

Capabilities:

Typical of Confederation designs, standard plate was used instead of advanced armour composites evenly distributed around all quarters and single heat sinks replace the advanced double strength systems, requiring 169 additional tons of them in order to process the entire heat output of the ship. Notably, standard gauss cannon are used instead of the heavier Lyran models, offering harder-hitting power at long ranges at the expense of sheer power at knife-fighting ranges.

Capellan Confederation Harmony Class (10)

                               Class      Built:
CCDS An Chung        (DDS-01) Harmony    Rashpur-Owens, Capella
CCDS Yung Jing       (DDS-02) Harmony    Rashpur-Owens, Capella
CCDS Tieh Tieh (11)  (DDS-03) Harmony    Earthwerks, Ltd., Ares

(10)Ships named for speeches made by past Chancellors.
(11)ex-Martial Unity. Renamed after the Warrior Houses protested.

Magestrix-class (Outworlds Alliance) – Sharing the Spoils

Overview:

As mentioned in the Magestrix class, during the diplomatic overtures to create a Pan-Periphery Alliance, the Magistracy agreed to build two Magestrix-class “dropship destroyers” for the OA as part of an overall aid package. The ships were built to the point of space-worthiness, with armour and weapon systems installed but with no ammunition and just enough fuel to make a journey to the OA world of Ramora for final fitting and outfitting by local artisans. The coming of Clan Snow Raven effectively ended the hopes of the Pan-Periphery Alliance taking place within the immediate future.

Capabilities:

Identical in every practical way to the MAF version, the OA Navy has staffed their ships with some of their most experienced officers, engineers and crews. Once they entered an alliance with the Ravens, Clan advisers are assigned to both vessels and HarJel technology is installed as well, improving overall protection and giving these ships an immeasurable edge in combat against any other opponents.

Outworlds Alliance Magestrix Class (16)

                       Class       Built:
OAS Praxton  (DSD-04) Magestrix   Nadine Pleasure Craft, Hardcore (17)
OAS Valasha  (DSD-05) Magestrix   Nadine Pleasure Craft, Hardcore (17)

(16)Ships named for planets within the Alliance
(17)Constructed for the OA by the Magistracy, both ships were delivered
bare with appointments and fittings to be completed locally. Final
fitting and cosmetic work was done by private contractors on Ramora.

Loyalist-class (Free Worlds League [Loyalist]) – Baptized in Blood
Kristen-class (Free Worlds League [WoB]) -

Overview:

WoB Rom lived up to its reputation in securing the data on the Harmony from the CCAF after the modifications were made. Having faced the Lakshmi class in combat, nearly losing a warship to one, the FWLM jumped at the chance of getting a ship capable of facing a Lakshmi on near-equal terms. Four were ordered; two ended up in Loyalist hands, two in WoB hands. The pagoda-like embellishments are removed, but the overall appearance resembles that of a bloated railroad spike.

Capabilities:

Based off the Harmony class, the FWL designers fitted the basic Capellan design with proprietary Light Gauss Rifles and adds infantry facilities (12 4-trooper BA bays & 48 BA marines for the Loyalist; 6 6-trooper BA bays & 36 BA marines for the Kirsten). The lighter armour belt still has both classes better protected than many FWL warships, which relegates the classes to supply train escort duties assigned, of course, by the “warship jockey” admirals in the navy.

Free Worlds League Loyalist Class (18)

                                     Class       Built:
FWLDS Black October (19)   (DSD-01) Loyalist   Kallon Industries, Loyalty
FWLDS Christopher & Janos  (DSD-02) Loyalist   Selasys, Inc, Loyalty (20)

(18)Originally, ships of this class were to be named for birds within the
League, but since the Jihad, that naming convention has been abandoned.
(19)Ex-Chango. Named changed to reflect the chemical attack of October
    25, 3068 on Atreus.
(20)Ex-Loyalist (a songbird on Oriente). Ship was originally laid out
at the Kallon yards, but the keel and engine were moved to the
Selasys yards, where she was finished on the tenth of August, 3069.
Renamed after the slain children of the “false” Captain-General
Thomas Marik. When launched, she accompanied him into exile.

Free Worlds League (WoB) Kristen Class (21)

                                            Class     Built:
FWLDS Redemption of the Lost (22) (DSD-03) Kristen   Deller, Bingham & Fouts, Atreus

Tesla-class (Clan Snow Raven) – Crossing Over

Overview:

The first taste the Ravens had of the Magestrix class pocket warship was during a confrontation with the Valasha, when they faced off against a three-Carrier CV task force; within two minutes the Ravens realized that they had bitten off more than they could chew and requested hegira. Since then, relations between the Ravens and the Alliance have vastly improved, and one of the first things the Ravens did was request a tour of their new pride and joy. A later offer to upgrade the armour, sensors and software also served to permit the Raven Scientist caste to reverse-engineer the design for their own use. The design was provisionally named by the scientist caste and the development names have been kept for the time being, but the individual names are expected to be changed in view of the losses suffered during the initial stages of the Jihad.

Capabilities:

The Magestrix class has been improved from the ground up: Advanced clan ferro-aluminum composites with HarJel, enough DHS to keep firing all its weapons without difficulty, a return to the original AR-10 Lyran configuration, upgrade of all AC/10’s to clan UAC/20’s, all ML’s upgraded to clan ERML’s, HMG’s returned to AMS configuration and replacing the LRM’s with ATM’s. The external appearance is completely different and reflects CSR’s vast experience with aerospace assets and research. Well trained crews improve performance and improvements in cargo and launching doors. Curiously, the fighter compliment was kept at six, presumably to carry three specialized points, as opposed to a star of similar fighters.
