Overview:

The sixty-four Resolution class Destroyers are what many in the Concordat think of when the word WarShip is used. These intrepid vessels were the mainstay of the defense of the Taurian Concordat for more than two hundred years. Although they were eventually eclipsed by the heavier and more powerful frigates, cruisers, and battleships, it was the Resolutions that won the heart and soul of the Taurian people.

First launched in 2379, the Resolutions were easily a match for many early Davion and Liao cruisers--which then led to those powers acquiring excess Hegemony ships and designing new and improved classes (such as the Davion class destroyer) of their very own to compete. Although old and outdated by the time of the Reunification War, the Resolutions proved themselves in combat time and again, shattering Star League advances--and paying a horrendous price in doing so.

Against the Star League, the Resolutions were not facing lightly armed and armored Liao and Davion ships from the Age of War, they were forced to directly confront Terran Hegemony battleships, and these small men o' war had neither the guns nor the armor for that task. And yet the crews of the Resolutions never broke, they did not run, even in the face of impossible odds. Instead, they bore down on their opponents, and through sheer tenacity and audacity sometimes managed to drag a Hegemony capital ship down to Hell with them.

One of the Star League naval officers put it into words after the conclusion of the war: "You couldn't help but admire them for their courage and their willingness to die in the defense of their homeland--and their stalwart dedication to take you with them. In the end, they ran out of ships, they ran out of 'Mechs, but those magnificent bastards never ran out of elan."

Capabilities:

The old Resolution class ships massed 410,000 tons, making them extremely small even for an Age of War destroyer. That small mass, on the other hand, allowed these vessels to attain a maximum thrust of 3-g's, although like the Warlocks and Wildcats before them, they suffered severe vibration problems at accelerations above 2-g's.

The KF Drive Core was a KF Millennium Engineering 186 and provided standard performance. Not quite as robust as the smaller Millennium 86 of the Wildcat, the 186 was nonetheless an extremely capable jump drive. Sub-light acceleration was provided by a quartet of GE-Westinghouse KVG-99 transit drives. These powerful engines required massive amounts of fuel; accordingly the Concordat installed more than fourteen thousand tons of fuel--enough to theoretically allow the Resolutions to cruise at 1-g for a standard year.

The original Resolutions carried 430 tons of Jessup Composites 232/b standard armor, but all were eventually refitted prior to the outbreak of the Reunification War with the Jessup Composites 331/f Improved Ferro-Aluminum. This heavy armor sheath provided cruiser level armor protection for this light destroyer and made the Resolutions some of the toughest destroyers in history.

Up to three hundred officers, crew, marines, and passengers could be embarked aboard ship. Two contra-rotating 95-meter diameter grav decks provided space for these men and women to retain their physical and psychological health during long deployments. Sufficient stocks of food, water, and life support were supplied to allow for deployments of up to one standard year in duration. 20,500 tons of spare parts was assigned to the ship, along with cargo space for 21,243 tons of general storage.

Like the Wildcat class Escort Destroyer, the Resolution class Fleet Destroyers embarked eight aerospace fighters and four small craft in two bays, along with thirty Marines. Although based upon the design of the Wildcat hangers, pilots were leery about the placement, as the grav decks were rather close astern of the launch and recovery decks, complicating flight operations.

Armament was impressive for these ships. Each arc mounted one Jankowski Mk II Class 20 Naval Autocannon with 50 shots, one Martin Gordan Blinder Class 45 Naval Laser, four Aurora Missiliers Deathscap LRM-15 launchers with 50 salvoes each, and four Hyades Weapons Consortium Retaliation Class 10 Autocannon with 50 shots each. Like the Wildcats before them, the Resolution class vessels did not mount the bulky and unreliable ammunition transfer systems of the time, resulting in an inability to move ammunition from the magazines of disabled weaponry to those guns still functioning during battle.

Capital missile armament consisted of two launchers mounted in each of the fore- and stern-quarters arcs. On the original Block I Resolutions, this was a pair of Norman Raytheon Javelin launchers for the Nike (later Barracuda) missiles. Starting with the Block II, one Javelin was replaced with a Norman Raytheon Harpoon launcher for the White Shark capital missile. In either case, each capital missile launcher was provided with a magazine containing 30 capital missiles. By the time of the Reunification War, all Block I vessels had been refitted to the Block II standard.

These ships were the first Taurian design to mount a dedicated point-defense array, consisting of eight five-gun clusters of small lasers, one per firing arc. Although capable of engaging just one missile flight at a time, these point-defense guns did improve the survivability of these ships and proved extremely useful during the Reunification War when the use of nuclear-tipped missiles by both sides became a common occurrence.

Sufficient heat sinks, power amplifiers, and auxiliary generators were installed to allow the Resolutions to make full use of their available firepower.

The Resolution class vessels were powerful and capable ships well able to fight above their own weight class. During the Reunification War, these ships gave their last full measure of devotion to the cause, with all perishing in the conflict.

Battle History:

The Battle of Robsart has been described as 'an orgy of blood, a duel with sub-machine guns at ten paces.' It was here that the heart of the Taurian Fleet was torn out in the largest confrontation of WarShips prior to the Amaris Coup.

Dozens of Resolutions were involved in the three-day action, but the action of Task Group Scott stands out from all other engagements. Task Group Scott was a scratch group of five Resolution class Destroyers (Relentless, Restoration, Royal Oak, Implacable, and Insolent) placed under the command of Captain Heather Scott aboard TCS Relentless.

During a lull in the battle on the second day, TG Scott was guarding the approaches to Robsart when the sensors aboard each ship detected a lone Monsoon class Battleship attempting to flank the Taurian forces. Escorted by a Lola and two Vincents, the SLDF forces far outgunned and outmatched the Taurian ships. Nonetheless, Captain Scott transmitted a report to Fleet Command and immediately launched her attack.  She ordered Implacable and Insolent to engage the escorts, while the remaining three vessels dealt with the Monsoon.

Although the Taurian ships tried to keep the range open to prevent the battleship from using its heavy broadside guns, soon enough a maneuvering mistake brought Royal Oak just into range—and a full broadside left her drifting dead in space, spilling atmosphere into open space.

With her two remaining destroyers, Captain Scott pressed the attack, despite their own heavy damage—for her weapons had savaged the thick armor of the Monsoon, and Implacable and Insolent were returning to the fight, having disabled the Lola and driven off the two Vincents. The four Taurian ships nipped in, tearing bites of armor from the Monsoon like a pod of Orcas attacking a dying whale, but even in her final moments, a Monsoon was a fearsome foe.

Insolent erupted as a battery of naval lasers tore through her side and detonated one of her magazines—causing Implacable to have to take evasive action straight into range of the main broadside battery of NAC-35s. Captain Scott, her Relentless relatively untouched, interposed her ship between Implacable and the Monsoon, suffering hit after hit, while Implacable's crew regained control and sped out of range.

Scott's flagship was breached in scores of compartments, her power systems on verge of failure, and the still living Monsoon turned to present her full broadside—a broadside that would have annihilated the ship completely.

But then, out of nowhere, came a hail of capital missiles, naval lasers, naval PPCs, and heavy naval autocannon. Unseen by either combatant locked in the death struggle, the Taurian Flagship, TCS Samantha Calderon, had at long-last arrived. Her single broadside broke the back of the Monsoon, and Scott's destroyers closed in for the kill, pouring fire into the shattered hulk until it detonated.

The Calderon, ordered to return to Taurus before the end of this pyrrhic confrontation, blinked her running lights in salute and continued on to the jump point home.

Captain Scott and her crews managed to patch enough systems for her Task Group to rejoin the Fleet in orbit over Robsart. The following day, she and every vessel under her command died during the final Star League assault against the Taurian defenders.

Upon returning to Taurus, Captain Helen Vickers of the Saucy Sam told reporters the story of TG Scott and their attack on the Monsoon. "It was the craziest, bravest thing I have ever seen,” she said. “They were only destroyers, but they threw themselves on that battlewagon like rabid dogs and were pretty well chewing it apart before I ever got into range. I think even without me, they would have finished her off just fine. No, ma'am," she answered the reporter. "I'm not the hero here, they are. Captain Scott and the men and women who followed her into Hell—those are your Taurian heroes."

Six years later, one of the final Calderon class battleship to be commissioned into service was christened TCS Heather Scott in honor of that officer.

Variants:

Throughout their long lifespan, the Resolutions received nearly constant upgrades to their electronics and communications systems, and each Block I vessel was refitted to the later Block II standard. Each also received the new IFA armor package prior to the Reunification War, designated the Block III upgrade. Other than these scheduled refits, there were no major modifications of the design.

Notable Vessels & Crews:

Resolution, Agile, Ardent, Arrogant, Avenger, Brave, Brazen, Brilliant, Cataphract, Champion, Charger, Courageous, Daring, Dauntless, Defiant, Fearless, Ferocious, Furious, Fusillade, Gladiator, Glorious, Havoc, Implacable, Illustrious, Impregnable, Inconstant, Indefatigable, Independence, Indignant, Indomitable, Inflexible, Insolent, Integrity, Intrepid, Invincible, Irresistible, Janissary, Lancer, Majestic, Onslaught, Phalanx, Raider, Rambler, Ranger, Rapid, Redoubt, Regent, Relentless, Renown, Repulse, Resolute, Restoration, Restless, Revenge, Rifleman, Royal Oak, Royal Sovereign, Royalist, Spartan, Terrible, Undaunted, Victory, Warrior, Zealous (plus eight vessels lost during the Age of War)

Deployment:

Standard deployment of the Resolutions was in divisions of two ships. One Fleet destroyer division was directly attached to every Heavy Cruiser and (later on) Battleship Division in the TCN. In addition, Light Cruiser divisions on independent service were also assigned a division of Fleet Destroyers, while still more unattached divisions patrolled the Concordat's long borders.
