Ngoverse/"The Administrator" I need another one!
« on: 24 May 2020, 19:46:31 »
3155-3165.  What is needed:

2.5 million tons of science and exploration capacity, capable of supporting a small taskforce with supplies and repair, heavily armed, but not battle-ship grade firepower in spite of battle-ship grade size and make it expensive.  Pile on the sensors and electronics to ridiculous levels.  this is an exploration base under military flag, intended to support deployments of 5 years or (Potentially) longer.

the "Lead Ship" in the class already has some scenes in the story (LCS Beagle) and the second vessel is named Discovery

speed isn't a priority with this-at least, sublight speed, but it does need at least 1 gravity standard thrust with a top limit in the 1.5 to 2 G range, it needs a gravity deck, and it needs to be armed-but not excessively.  comparable firepower to a light cruiser on a dreadnought's hull sounds about right.  the big requirement is to be an exploration/survey base with a maneuver drive and a compact jump core.

Too cliched. Endeavour and Resolution though would be good.

yes, LF batteries would be good.

Ruger

I kind of think if they get up to four of these, Endeavour and Resolution will probably be there.

what makes me giggle to myself, is the idea that the BIGGEST ships the Lyrans are building, are purpose-built Science and exploration ships, while their most common design is a nasty little short-range cutter that is like a spacegoing U-boat with a small flight deck.

why?

what is the "Lyran Stereotype?"

Assault 'mechs, big, big, big ass tanks, the bigger and heavier and outright nastier the better-and here they are, their biggest military vessel is one devoted to peaceful purposes far from active war zones.

When Sharron Ngo publicly requested a Battleship that reflected Lyran values in 3145 Julian McQuinston, submitted the specifications for what would become the Frederick Steiner Battleship. The vessel was a technological marvel that used every trick that Semier Data Tron developed during the construction of the Antoinette Greer habitat, a massive 1.9 million ton O'Neill Cylinder that quartered over 70,000 people and led to the success of the Rhodes industrial area in the Duran system.

The octogenarian never expected that he would develop a long lasting friendship with Sharron Ngo. When she wrote to him about her dream of exploring strange new worlds and of five year missions into the unknown Julian took it upon himself to start development on a "Dreadnought Class" KF core. He knew that a proper exploration vessel would have to be close to the Newgrange in size and profile and that the technical aspects of a core of that size might not be achievable.

It took Semier Data Tron working with the SDT University on Tharkad a year to develop the required extruding process to build the core. The entire assembly was super cooled so that the core never exceed 7 kevlvin at any point during the seven month extrusion process.

Smaller prototype examples of the drive were tested to destruction, the drives proved to be no more durable then regularly built drives but when the drives were damaged through abuse repairs were found to be significantly easier. Even recasting of the drive core (a technique pioneered during WoB buildup) was found to be considerably less complex using these drives.

When the Archon authorized the development of the Beagle in 3150 McQuinston was ready with a proposal for a proper exploration craft.

Armed with the many letters that Sharron had shared McQuinston took a leave from the Semier Data Tron Board to lead the project personally.

The Beagle pulled parts from the Frederick Steiner parts bin at every opportunity, the weapon batteries were lifted directly from the Battleship along with its impressive layers of Lamellor Ferro Carbide protection.

Every known scientific and military sensor was included in the design. Two HPGs to allow for multiple simultaneous communications links, a Naval Comm-Scanner Suite was included along with a Naval C3 system.

The KF-Drive controller of the Frederick Steiner was heavily modified to allow for ten drop ships and a massive two million ton pressurized repair bay to bring even the Antoinette Greer through hyperspace.

A lithium fusion battery was included in the design as a common sense feature for exploring unknown systems.

To support the craft a battalion of fighters were included as well as 20 small craft, billets for a regiment of battle armored marines were included along with passenger quarters for 3000 scientists, engineers and support personnel.

Eight 250m grav-decks were installed to give the many science labs, hydroponics bays and quarters a wide range of simulated gravity.

Unlike most vessels that run their decks at 1G the Beagle will frequently change the spin of its decks as needed to facilitate the mission needs.

The KF-Drive was modified to allow for Jihad style "super jumps" and the equipment to fix and recast the burnt-out core was included in the repair yard facilities.

After the Beagle's first deployment the ship had some specialized pieces of equipment installed to enhance its already impressive abilities an improved version of a SLDF Caspar ECM system and using technology gained from the Federated Suns protectorate of Taussen an Autonomous Tactical Analysis Computer was installed.

The enhanced computational power of this computer system allowed the Beagle to include some very special passengers on their missions and was theorized that it could be linked to the ships twin HPG systems to block and incoming jump by interfering with its emergence field.

After the refit of the Beagle a plaque was installed in the auxiliary KF control room it read "In memory of Julian McQuinston 3064-3157 Empathy was his greatest asset."

When the Design call for the Beagle class Exploration Vessel went out, Ioto industries and Bowie Industries took it as a challenge, given their history with the Moljnir Class Battlecruiser. Looking at the given specifications, they focused their design on endurance and the ability to transport the massive amount of personnel, supplies, and support vessels a long duration exploration mission would require. The resulting vessel is as much a mobile space station as it is a warship, and acts as a hub for a small fleet of dropships and small craft.

At the core of the vessel's operations are the Ten grav-decks, each two hundred and fifty meters across, providing 1 gravity accommodations for labs, medical spaces, and crew support. A large unpressurized Repair yard allows for support of vessels up to one million tons, allowing it to maintain all its embarked compliment of dropships as well as most of its escorting vessels. thirty six Small craft allow for flexibility in resupply and exploration, while twenty four dropship collars give it the transport capability just shy of the old Potemkin class, and allow it to carry with it a plethora of defensive and exploration dropships. The crew compliment has been provided with spacious quarters to maintain morale on long duration missions, with a large number of passenger quarters allocated for scientist compliments and to allow rotation of the crew off escorting vessels through in a form of "shore leave". Extensive scientific instrumentation has been fitted to the vessel to allow it to perform research operations across multiple fields.

Defensively it carries seven and a half thousand tons of ferro-carbide, providing heavy protection, as well as a potent point defense array of ninety six laser Anti-Missile System, arranged twelve per arc for all aspect protection. Firepower is light for a vessel of its size, and focused primarily on endurance. Forty Four Class 45 Naval Lasers, arranged in batteries of six per arc save for the aft, which mounts only 2, provide the main offensive firepower. In the nose and forward flanks this is supplemented with one dozen Whiteshark missile launchers, arranged in three batteries of four. The only weapons using ammunition, these are provided with eighty missiles per battery, divided between standard rounds and Nuclear tipped Santa-Anna's, as per standard current LCN doctrines.  Augmenting this is an antifighter armament of sixteen each Extended Range Particle Projection Cannons and Large Pulse Lasers in each arc. to handle this heat heavy armament three thousand Double Heat Sinks have been fitted.
The vessel's fighter compliment is a mere thirty six fighters, deemed sufficient by the design team given the non-combat focus and the ability to bring dedicated carrier dropships on the vessel's docking collars.

Knocked...right..out..of....the park. SO good.

Thanks, I tried to give you all of the weird tech plot hooks.

I did consider the interconnectivness unlimited improved jump drive but I can't figure out if the drive is damaged on every jump or every jump over 30 LY and since the ship travels in a fleet extra range isn't something that I felt was worth more then the WoB system that would be used as an absolute last resort.

And I wanted to add some extra difficulty to building a "biggest" KF Core possible to the fluff.
