Vesper Light Scout Car Davion/Various
« on: 08 February 2019, 16:34:49 »
I thought this made a nice alternative to bug 'Mechs, or at least a much less expensive alternative.

Code: [Select]
Vesper Light Scout Car

Mass: 10 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Motive Type: Wheeled
Rules Level: Advanced Rules
Era: Succession Wars
Tech Rating/Era Availability: D/X-D-D-A
Production Year: 0
Cost: 123,375 C-Bills
Battle Value: 195

Power Plant: Erlichman PowCel 60 Fuel Cell Engine
Cruise Speed: 86.4 km/h
Flanking Speed: 129.6 km/h
Armor: Foxe Type 1 Standard Armor
Armament:
    1 Hovertec SRM-2
    2 Kicker Machine Guns
Manufacturer: Erlichman Engineering
    Primary Factory: Lucius
Communications System: Wayne EchoComm
Targeting and Tracking System: Wayne BraveTrac

Overview:
Erlichman Engineering has been better known as a manufacturer of civilian
vehicles such as their Lindy light personal VTOL and the Otter III watercraft.
Near the end of the third millenium, the company decided that they needed to
diversify into the combat vehicle market and produce an inexpensive yet
effective vehicle that made use of their expertise in fuel cell powerplants.
Starting with a wheeled chassis, the engineering team were tasked to design the
vehicle while keeping it as simple to manufacture and maintain as possible.
What the team came up with was seen as a scout unit that could do the job of a
much more expensive 'Mech in certain situations.

Capabilities:
The Vesper is unusual for a combat vehicle in terms of both its light weight
as well as its fuel cell/electric powerplant.   With only a single crewman, a
Vesper is often lost in the background due to its low profile and silent
operation.   The  Erlichman PowCel 60 generated enough energy to propel the
little armored car at speeds of over a hundred KPH, yet is easy to repair and
runss on what is essentially just hydrogen and oxygen.   While fuel cell
powerplants lack the overall range of their hydrocarbon-fueld betheren, the
fact that the vehicle can be refuield with water helps to extend its range
tremendously.

A Vesper is at its best when it goen unnoticed by its enemies while it keeps
mtabs on them.   Often lost in the background clutter, a Vesper can be mistaken
at range for a civilian vehicle.   The semi-recessed turret on top can give lie
to that appearance when raised to unlimber a pair of Kicker machine guns.   The
Kickers are very heat-efficient and while they don't deal a great deal of
damage they are vicious against unprotected infantry and unarmored vehicles
alike.   For light combat vehicles and some 'Mechs, the little vehicle mounts a
Hovertec SRM launcher.   Though it only launches two missiles at a time, when
loaded with Inferno rounds it can give light 'Mechs something to worry about.

Like the rest of the vehicle, the Vesper's electronics are simple, robust,
yet powerful.   Capable of burning through both interference as well as
jamming, the Wayne EchoComm and BraverTrac enable a Vesper driver to find the
enemy as well as keep it in sight.

Deployment:
The Vesper was first seen in Davion units, especially in the Chaos March
where its inexpensive nature has made it a fisture in many garrison units.
The successes of the Vesper has made a name for it, and as a result has been
purtchased by a number of customers outside of Davion space in need of
inexpensive scouts.

Deployment somehow lost its hard returns.

The vehicle is nice, but it really needs another half ton of armor.  Fractional accounting would allow you to drop the SRM ammo to half a ton (and recover sufficient weight from the turret to PPC-proof the rear too).

I activated fractional accounting and only got 0.2 tons back; you need at least .5 tons to add more armor.

Now, I added an extra 5 tons to the weight, and this is what I got.   Unfortunately, I lose the overall inexpensive nature of the 10-ton chassis.

Unfortunately, SSW doesn't implement Fractional Accounting 100% correctly (it should give back tonnage for turrets and control gear).  And you should be able to add armor by point with FA checked in SSW.  I know I can...
