generally you'd want at least 1 world that is habitable by humans without much technological aid. doesn't mean it'll always be a nice place to live, but if you can breath the air, get clean water, and can cultivate terran (or at least human compatible) crops without having to resort to the products of a developed industrial base, you can make a good go of things even if you lose most of your advanced technology. societies without that sort of fallback option tend not to do all that great when cut off from easy resupply.

We may also see two MACs one in the Capellans and one in the Draconis Combine.  Similar to how there are 4-5 Eridani Light Horse factions in the 3150.  As for units like the Tau Ceti Lancers unless there is a full blown (Free Worlds League style) civil war I doubt we will see a huge number of Capellans going merc.

It takes time, effort, and resources to switch the lines over to producing something else.  The Wolves are short on all of those right now.  One change (adding Clan CASE) would make the Shockwave a decent medium trooper.  Surely that’s quicker and more efficient than retooling the line to build the Stormwolf or something.

Edit: what’s up with this text size thing? I have no idea why the forums just arbitrarily change the size of text some time, but it’s been going on for years. What causes it? Why can’t it be fixed?

I'm not aware of any issues with text size.  It might be an issue with your browser?

Give me a couple weeks to paddle around that lake, explore, and camp, thank you.  Seriously, thank you to the universe.  (I'd bet the mosquitos will carry you away if you don't have the good spray.)

I wonder what the first explorers thought when they mapped that one out for the first time?

Edit: Having worked in surveying and such, I can picture the first cartographers telling the explorers and surveyors that they have to go back out and draw up new notes on the lake because "there's no way it can possibly be a circle".

Aren't Horses a bit far away physically to be of concern to Wolves for at least a decade?

As for conservativism Horses are very liberal in terms of ruling the planets in their domain but in terms of internal Clan life they would be quite conservative precisely because of this clean separation

Fan Fiction / Re: War of Light

Spacing was according to guidelines proposed on the webpage. It was double spaced and while the paragraphs were not boudle spaced, that's 'cause it said not to do so. As I said, it comes up compacted since I merely copy/pasted it and it comes out that way on the forum. Guess I'll take the time to space it properly sometime then, if I wan't people to be able to read it here.

It wasn't so much a suggestion as the fact that there's no one to root for in this story and, well, that's one of the points of it. More sympathetic characters were a bit pushed off the main track as the word count quickly imposed itself.

That and some shortcomings in the written english department...but I'm not english, hadn't written anything worth mentioning in english for 11 years when I wrote this piece, and don't have a good text writting software. I use open office and have issues with the modules for auto-corrections. Short comings were inevitable, hoped to be able to do a good enough job  with the language but didn't.

Thanks all. I'll ask again for help once I re-organize the text.

The Periphery / Re: Surviving and thriving in the Deep Periphery?

In addition to Allen's comment, I'll add these...

1 - When a colonial expedition is initially formed, they most often have identified at least one suitable colony world, usually there will at least be signs that others worlds are near by.  This is not guaranteed, of course, many a colonial effort was woken up by reality of getting somewhere a few hundred light years away only to be either disappointed by what was actually there, or just plain old doomed.

2 - Some colonial efforts were as small as one jumpship and whatever it could stuff into its attendant dropships.  Some are composed of several ships like the Axumites as you mentioned.  Developing orbital repair facilities for jumpships is going to be more effort than the colony can muster on its own in most instances.  The Axumites can affect basic repairs on their ancient jumpships, but if a helium seal blows out, or a nav computer fries, they lose that ship, for example.  Most Deep Periphery powers need outside help for high-tech options like that.  Bringing effective industrial capability that doesn't need 6 or 7 centuries to get rolling requires a large effort at the start.  Most Deep Periphery realms were not founded by such large efforts, nor were they even close...  But luckily there are stronger powers that will sometimes lend a hand in exchange for trade rights for resources, or strategic considerations like landing, repair, training on their worlds, etc...   (Hello, Word of Blake!  Let's make a deal...)

3 - HPG's... If Comstar or WoB finds your realm, they will often offer to build an HPG facility but take care regarding what they want in return, much like with the orbital yards mentioned above.

Interesting thread!
