Tufana, the new Pegasus
« on: 26 January 2011, 18:23:00 »
I am a huge fan of Hovercraft, even with the Total Warfare changes.  My personal favorite for ultimate pest is the Pegasus.  I think the role of ultimate pest has been replaced by the Tufana our of TRO 3085.  It's faster, heavier armor, though it only has a MML and a narc, three tons of ammo gives you plenty of options, and the Narc can help ruin somebodies day depending on who your company mates are.

The more I look at this thing, the more I like it.  Anybody use this on a board yet?

There's an iNarc version, too. Different sort of fun there.

The Tufana is a good one, in both variants.

It can show the usefulness of the (i)Narc system, which is IMO one of the most understimated piece of equipment under TW rules.

I haven't had the opportunity, although I'm expecting good things out of the Tufana.  I'm unconvinced of the expense vs. using a much cheaper Royal Zephyr or Scimitar (TAG), but since neither one is being built by the Regulans, making their home-grown variant fast as lightning is not a bad option.

I recently enlightened some of my Battletech members to the benefits of Narc when we were fighting in in Summoners (Thor). They earned a new respect for the little Narc Beacon launchers and what they can do for your LRM and even SRM units. I also like the little Tufana and what it can do and I always respect a unit who can wield Narc effectively. Since fighting them can be very deadly if you underestimate them, which a lot of players I know seem to do.

The Tufana is a great unit in the context of a domestically supported Regulan Hussars.  The Regulans, with their traditional love of LRMs will get alot of use out of the Tufana.  The flexibility of the MMLs make for interesting interactions with units like Trebuchets, Ostwars, Patriots and Warhammers.  I can recall Regulans using either JES II or JES IIIs on Atreus during Operation Homecoming.  Lots of potential there.

Being able to load some infernos will also help round out the arsenal.

Outside that context, it's still a good unit in terms of speed, armor and electronics.

The Tufana's main configuration seems like it could be useful, although the lack of ammoless weapons worries me. The iNarc variant is much more my style, and also strikes me as a much more useful unit overall. It's probably the best us of iNarc I've seen to date.

Drop to an MML 5 and use the 1.5 tons for a couple of lasers.

I'm not worried about the lack of energy weapons. The Tufana is very much a tactical spotter, meant to operate as part of a larger force., if it manages to completely empty its ammo bins, it has more than accomplished its mission as a spotter/strike craft, and should probably return to base before its luck runs out.

Exactly. Its main weapon is the NARC/spotting gear. The MML is just a bonus.

If it manages to empty its MML bins before being slagged in a major engagement, considering the mix of spotting equipment it has, I'd be mildly surprised anyway.  Narc, artillery, and semi-guided LRM counters all begin with the same first step: Neutralize the spotter somehow.  Of the three hovercraft I'm aware of that mix Narc and TAG, the Tufana is the most lightly armored by a fair margin; the Zephyr and Scimitar are approximately the same but the Zephyr puts another four points on the turret the Scimitar spreads around the body locations.  It's not so noticeable on the front plates (25 vs. 29 or 30) but on the sides, rear, or turret, it's very evident.

The reason is that MML launcher.  Zephyrs and Scimitars only have 5 tons of other equipment.  On the plus side, the Tufana is faster, and unlike the Zephyr, Narc is in the turret, increasing your movement flexibility, although exposing your sides is not a good idea in a hover.

I'm not a big NARC guy, I'd rather it had an old-school LL there, but other than that I like it a lot.

Narc, used properly, can be a nightmare.  Remember, it's not just Artemis IV, it can also make nailing someone indirectly a lot easier.  Now, I prefer semi-guided LRMs myself since they're easier to incorporate into a force and have somewhat better benefits, but Narc is not to be underestimated and it's easier to come by.
