Help finding Retrotech produced in the Jihad?
« on: 04 May 2024, 01:32:37 »
So, I help finding finding Retrotech units produced during the Jihad.

I've tried the MUL; it wasn't a really effective way to find them, but I used the filters to specify (unit type), (technology), and (Jihad), but the only ones I found were the Rook and Hawkwolf.

I tried looking in MML, doing advanced search with (Primitive), but looking through it all I can find are the original Primitive units, not the Retrotech.

I've had the most luck looking for Retrotech manufacturers - finding one unit and tracing it back to the manufacturer.  So far, I have 4-5;

Rim Motors-Commando
Osaka Heavy Metrics - Ymir, OstWar
New Hessen Mechworks - Battleaxe, Rook
Hope Industrial Works - Hawkwolf, firebee, and Dervish

I think Vandenburg Mechanical Industries builds some, but need to check again later - time for bed.

The Objectives series of PDFs lists lots of RetroTech manufacturers for each faction.

You need to set Availability Era to Jihad on the MUL, instead of Intro Era.

Hmm.  Ok - I think I get it.  I set it as 'Production era', not 'availability era'.  Much better, 44 units!  Thanks, MadCap.

FYI.

Production Era is the single Era when it was first produced.
So all SLDF era units will show up in SLDF but not later.

Availability Era is every single era where they can claim that some of them were around, regardless of if it was in production or not.
Just if they existed at that time.

Ok, I seem to be wrong, again.

'Availability' set to 'Jihad' seems to bring lots of units through the filter, but they don't seem to be IN PRODUCTION during the Jihad.

So, resetting the filter to 'Production era'->'Jihad' - but this can't be the complete list. (Pic related)  What am I missing?

Alright, I think I've got it.  I had to search for the word 'Primitive' on Sarna, then chase down individual mechs and the companies manufacturing them.

Mind you, there are a couple with no links, articles with no links (or broken ones) and articles that contain information that they have a factory producing Primitive units (and names them) but no company name.

Now, all I have to do is make the list, and fill out a second list of domestic Primitives for my project.

I'll post a list of mechs/companies/locations for the next guy, later.

I'm curious.

What did you find wrong with the list from the MUL when you selected the following?

Tech = Primitive
Availability = Jihad

That should give you anything that was available in the Jihad.

And by default, since I'd think most Primitive tech was "Extinct" prior to the Jihad, if it shows up again its because its "In Production".

As I mentioned above the "Production Era" field is only for the first era that something is created, its Introduction Era, not every era its in production.

I'm not sure, but when I followed MadCap's advice I got the longer list and this looks exactly like it.

Mind, I'm sure I did it the hard way, but I wanted the company/world/affiliation as well.  I think I can work it in, but I'll have to see.

Lesnovo, Free World’s League

Shadow Hawk (55 tons)
  Nimakachi Fusion Products Limited
Lesnovo, Free World’s League

Wolverine (55 tons)
  Nimakachi Fusion Products Limited
Lesnovo, Free World’s League

This has me curious: the MUL has all three of these go extinct after the Late Republic era, presumably because Nimakachi of Lesnovo gears up to produce something else when the Blackout hits, but I'm not able to find out what. It's possible they went back to IndustrialMechs, since that's what was originally built there, but I don't know that that's likely, given the wider series of events at the time.

I suppose it's possible they upgraded the lines to standard Battlemechs, at which point the Wasp line is an easy conversion, at the same tonnage and engine rating.  The Wolverine, though, uses a different size engine between its standard and primitive versions, and the primitive SHD-1R Shadow Hawk is only 50 tons, so it's even less of a direct conversion of the line.

For some reason I thought there was some fluff somewhere in a Republic product that did say a lot of the Retro did go away post Jihad when it was no longer "needed".
By either 1 of the 2 reasons you have.  Revert to Industrial or Upgrade to Intro.
For the most part it was reverting to support "Stone's Peace".

What your probably seeing is that it took till the end of the Late Republic for the models in circulation to go extinct again over time.

Similar concept to how it took till the 2nd SW for a lot of SLDF designs to go "extinct" even though the factory making them was nuked in the Amaris Crisis.

I'm not sure, but when I followed MadCap's advice I got the longer list and this looks exactly like it.

Mind, I'm sure I did it the hard way, but I wanted the company/world/affiliation as well.  I think I can work it in, but I'll have to see.

The MUL does not provide factory data. That's what the Objectives series is for.

For some reason I thought there was some fluff somewhere in a Republic product that did say a lot of the Retro did go away post Jihad when it was no longer "needed".

It's in the Objectives series, which I'll again say answers just about every question this thread asks. I don't remember how detailed they get on this front but they do discuss the shutting down and/or retooling of RetroTech factories.
My wife writes books

"...finally, giant space panties don't seem so strange." - Whistler
"Damn you, Weirdo... Damn you for being right!" - Paul
"...I was this many years old when I found out that licking a touchscreen in excitement is a bad idea." - JadeHellbringer
"We are the tribal elders. Weirdo is the mushroom specialist." - Worktroll

Brought up because I don't own the Objective series.

Okay - thank you all, but I think this is settled.

10. Copyright and Quoting Other Sources
This message board will not be used to distribute, or facilitate distribution of, unauthorized or illegally obtained copyrighted materials. This includes posting a link or even just references to websites or resources that distribute such, whether it happens on the internet or not.

If you post materials from other websites (including news sources), books and/or newsgroups:

Never quote more than a few lines from any source
Give credit to the original author
Provide a link to the source web page, where appropriate
Summaries of news articles are acceptable and in fact preferred, with links to the original article included.

Some recent posts have got an awful lot of information. "A few lines" over and over again is pushing it.

To be specific.

Lots of this:

Can you clarify if you are saying........

You can't quote the MUL?
Or
You can't quote Sarna?

If your going to quote put a link to the Sarna or MUL directly?

3053: Star Colonel Rexor Kerensky: The Silver Wolves

Update my post with an example. It's the huge amounts of factory data.

Add Marian Arms who began producing the Icarus, Gladiator, Emperor and maybe the retrotech Centurion 9H during the Jihad.
