(Answered) Liftoff Thrust Restriction
« on: 13 October 2018, 05:47:46 »
Page 88 of TW used to have a line about units needing a Safe Thrust above (not equal to) 2 to take off.  Errata 4-4 deleted this sentence, and didn't replace it.  As written, this implies a unit with a Safe Thrust of 1 (0.5 G) can take off in any mode (horizontally or vertically) from any planet.  StratOps is silent on a hard limit, but Errata 2-1 does insert a section on page 72 requiring a fuel point per 0.5 G of local gravity for vertical take off.  This could be interpreted as an implicit limit for vertical liftoff, but seems to permit Maximum Thrust.

Questions:
1) Can an Aerodyne unit with a Safe Thrust of 1 liftoff (horizontally, in atmosphere), regardless of the local gravity?
2) Can Maximum Thrust be used to liftoff?

Hi Daryk.  You said the removal was replaced, but there was something added at the same time:

“A horizontal liftoff takes 2 Thrust Points, and places the aerospace unit on the appropriate hex of the atmospheric map at Velocity 1 heading in the direction the landing strip was oriented on the ground map, and may not spend further thrust points that turn. The unit is not subject to Gravity (p. 80) this turn.”

Does that address your concern (forgive me; I don't know much about aero and am running it by you quick).

I missed that on the following page of the errata, thanks!  That does answer question 1 above (as "yes"), but not question 2.  Can Maximum Thrust be used to lift off (either vertically or horizontally)?

Yeah, we'll be errataing TW to say that max thrust is okay on takeoff.  The Torrent bomber can't work without it.
