Dirtbag BattleMech Design Thread

OK, so, this is tangentially-related, but not the same as, the Dirtbag Militia concept, or the Bubbamech design concept.  It's something I thought up when looking at the fluff text of the Cronus, and how they were originally cobbled together from busted 55-ton Shadow Hawks, Griffins, and Wolverines.  It's also related to problems that Errant MechWarriors may experience with upkeep on their designs.

So, here's the basics on a Dirtbag BattleMech:

1. Technology base is, for the most part, Introductory or Primitive.  Dirtbag 'Mechs either represent old BattleMechs that have been patched together with bailing wire and duct tape over the decades or centuries, using what materials are on hand, or newer construction on a lower technology base.

2. Construction:
  • Chassis type is Primitive Industrial, Primitive BattleMech, standard Industrial, or standard BattleMech.  No endo steel, since that represents a higher tech base needing orbital infrastructure that Dirtbag Periphery worlds, mercs, Errants or pirates can't keep up repairs on.
  • Armor types are standard/heavy industrial, regular industrial or commercial.  Patchwork armor is certainly allowed.
  • Heat sinks are single.  No fancy double heat sinks for you!
  • Engines: ICE, fuel cell, fission and standard fusion are allowed, in regular or primitive forms.  This is obviously a bit of a departure from BubbaMechs.  But, don't get too cheerful, yet.
  • Standard jump jets can represent existing jump jets.  Prototype jump jets represent kludgy replacements, poorly-maintained originals, and are probably more fun.

6. Weapons:
  • Rifles (loading mechanisms for autocannons require better metallurgy)
  • Standard machine guns
  • Standard flamers, vehicle flamers, fluid guns and sprayers
  • Rocket launchers  (LRMs and SRMs are too fancy)
  • Prototype small lasers, medium lasers, large lasers and PPCs (not necessarily prototypes, but either lower quality production or kludgy patched-together repairs on originals)
  • Blazer cannons (they're inefficient enough already, and give you access to a headcapper with the loss of the AC/20)
  • Unpowered melee weapons, like hatchets, swords, retractable blades, and shields.  No vibroblades, luminescent or otherwise

I'm certainly open to additions or modifications of the above.  Thoughts?

Here's my take on the Wolverine, possibly bending requirements a bit:

First, a fission engine. Because why not. Limits speed to 3/5 though. Jump capacity isn't provided by jets but mechanical jump boosters. You don't oppose flinging a 55-ton 'Mech with radioactive engine into air with springs, do you?
Armor is industrial-grade plate, 13.5 tons of it.
Armament: Heavy Rifle with two tons of ammo, a vehicle flamer with one ton of ammo, and four rocket launcher 10s for some endurance.

I just had a vision of an Atlas with no weapons but mechanical jump boosters. It jumps quite a long jump and smashes a 'Mech by "landing" on it.

Introduced a little late, and still have those fancy reloading mechanisms, but they're crap enough that why not?

Is that a Zeus or are you just happy to see me?

Likely based on some poor bastard's pride and joy at the very edge of what might be considered Lyran Space. Its slower than a standard Zeus due to the much smaller (and cheaper) engine. It's coated in as much Industrial Armor as the frame can take (Even then it squeaks when turning corners). The right arm is dominated by 9 Ten-Tube rocket launchers with an additional 3 launchers in the right torso. The left Torso sports what is likely a 'fell off the back of a dropship' find in a VERY hot running Blazer cannon (which sometimes is used to cook dinner). The left arm is dominated by the 'slugger' giant metal baseball bat. Used mostly to ward off potential suitors to the daughter of the owner of this contraption.

Crusader-3L based.  Swap the twin mediums for prototype versions, throw a third in the head.  Drop half the machine gun ammo, but add four more machine guns.  Armor swapped for cheap commercial-grade with the same allocation.  And rocket launchers. So many rocket launchers:  11 RL-10s, 4 RL-15s, 2 RL-20s.  Few more heat sinks for good measure.

Following the theme of the Griffin, the Awesome can also fire both Blazers if it's standing in water.  In place of the Small Laser, it has three Machine Guns to keep those pesky infantry off...

And I just realized I've every weight class except Heavy... hmmm...

The engineers contemplated removing the alpha strike button, but some maniac shrugged his shoulders and said, "It's not like it can automatically shut down... one button will leave the MechWarrior plenty of time to hit all the overrides..."  ::)

If it survives firing off ALL THOSE ROCKET LAUNCHERS, it can still run and fire that lovely Blazer Cannon all day long...  :drool:

It definitely makes it more reasonable, because it's in the same ballpark as the prototype large laser and prototype PPC, though the PPC probably still has an edge.
