Overview:
Symbols are vital when building an empire.
In the late 3050s when the Star League reformed, Black Hawk Mechworks was
contacted by representatives of the newly-formed League in order to engage in a
bold initiative. The main thrust of this initiative was the development of a
standardised selection of 'Mechs based on the ancient Star League Defence Force
designs, but using the latest in battlefield technology in order to create a
state-of-the-art 'core' for the new Star League's armies. Equal parts
propaganda effort and arms development program, the initiative had barely
completed its initial design phase when the second Star League was disbanded.
While the designs were largely complete, they languished without a prospective
purchaser for years until the mid-3080s when the Republic of the Sphere
expressed an interest in funding the concept; seeing it as potential fodder for
legitimacy for the new protectors of Terra. With an injection of fresh funding,
and even more technological developments to employ, the existing designs were
tweaked and refined, and a new range of Battlemechs was born.
Capabilities:
The revamp of the Black Knight for the Star League Redux line of 'Mechs draws
from the 'Clanbuster' variant produced by Comstar in that it mounts a massive
Hatchet in the left arm. Designed primarily for close-range brawling, the use
of Triple-Strength Myomer allows it to both close remarkably quickly for a
Heavy 'Mech mounting a Standard Fusion Engine, and to deal terrific physical
damage at point blank range once it engages the enemy. Its ranged weapons are
quite characteristic of the Black Knight concept; several mid-range
high-penetration weapons (in this case a trio of Snub-Nose PPCs) supported by
an array of lasers for additional close-range support. An uncharacteristic
improvement, however, is that the BL-SLR's heat dissipation capacity is very
much up to the task of handling constant fire from its main weapons. 16 double
heatsinks allow it to fire the PPCs while constantly running and remaining
heat-neutral, while the quartet of lasers dotted around its torso can easily be
used to spike heat levels to the point where the improved movement and
damage-dealing capabilities of the TSM kicks in. While it does carry some
anti-infantry capability in the form of a Small Pulse Laser, it is otherwise
almost entirely geared towards anti-'Mech combat (a nod to the perception of
the Black Knight that, all things being equal, in a one-on-one battle with
another heavy BattleMech the Black Knight should always triumph), and therefore
somewhat mediocre in facing combined arms forces, the BL-SLR is nonetheless a
fairly efficient design; and one that can deal terrifying damage while still
remaining quite mobile for a 'Mech of its size.
