My thoughts exactly.
The J-27 could leave the ammo trailer with it for an additional 8 tons of firepower, or if it was in a particularly dicey area that might be overrun, the tractor itself could stay with it and provide it's cargo bay of 3 tons to feed the breach on the cannon, as well as provide alternative ammo loads, such as smoke, fletchette, or cluster, and getting the hell out of dodge when things get messy.
