The Mandalorian Discussion Thread
« on: 11 November 2019, 08:43:45 »
Ladies and gentlemen, as promised, this will be your one-stop-shop for all things to do with discussing The Mandalorian, which premieres on Disney+ on Nov 12.

To serve as a refresher, because of serious, recurring problems in the all-purpose Star Wars discussion thread, any posts here will be monitored very closely. The mods understand and respect that many of you are extremely passionate about the Star Wars franchise, but those passions do not give you license to ignore the rules of this forum. We expect everyone who posts on these boards to treat each other with respect, regardless of differing opinions.  Considering how difficult that proved to be in the other Star Wars thread, I strongly encourage everyone to refresh their memory of the forum rules: https://bg.battletech.com/forum-rules/.

Finally, this thread is for discussion of The Mandalorian and, while it is inevitable that some comments may necessitate referencing other facets of Star Wars media, there is going to be a very low bar for what is considered off-topic.  If you're going to bring the OG trilogy or the Prequels or the Sequels or the comics or whatever else into the discussion, it needs to relate to the new series. Discussion about Rise of Skywalker is strictly off-limits.

Looks very cool to me. The design of the armour alone is getting huge points, plus the casting of one of the supporting characters gives me the giggles.

And as long as he doesn't do anything dumb like fall into the Sarlacc pit three times, I'm onboard with this.

Watching the latest preview at least on two separate occasions the Mandalorian deflects blaster shots using his shoulder plates. Why don't the stormtroopers get armor like this since the ones they wear doesnt stop anything?

That stuffs reserved for the actually competent troopers assigned to units in the choice posts in the Core systems.  That's also why the visible troopers can't hit anything - the last ones that barely meet cutoff get posted out in the boonies where most of the films take place.

Is there any way to see it besides subscribing to Disney?

Wait for it to be released on dvd/blue ray/4K.

There's something oddly hypnotic about Werner Herzog's delivery, isn't there? "Bounty hunting is a complicated profession."

I hear we're getting a new TIE called the Outland TIE based very heavily on this concept art from Episode 7:

Werner's got a mix of the right attitude and the right voice and it's trippy.  His narration in Grizzly Man really helped the atmosphere of that film.  I won't get D+ (as tempting as it is) but I'd love to see how involved he is in Mandalorian.

I enjoyed the first episode, but until the final sequence it was almost self-consciously reminding us that it was Star Wars every 30 seconds or so.  That continues into the end, but at least it's balanced out with more of a plot and less time spent on setup.

Those last couple of minutes definitely have me wanting to keep watching though. And the production art over the closing credits were great.

Loved it as well.

I was quite impressed they were able to keep to near movie quality production values with the budget they had - though his first bounty (the blue guy) just screamed "Star Trek alien".

I'm hoping at some point they explain just how the hell the fob is able to locate it's target

After only one episode IG-11 is right up there with K-2SO and L3-37 as my all time favorite droids.

Most of the music wasn't working for me though.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. A very action-packed, "show, don't tell" style. The last shootout reminds me of Iron Man 1, unsurprising given Jon Favreau's involvement.

9/10
-0.5 for the music being a little too heavy-handed for me.
-0.5 for Pedro walking a little awkwardly.....we don't see his face so his body language is essential. He doesn't walk like he's comfortable in combat gear that he's been wearing for years/decades. I think that's mostly a costume department issue, if anything. He moved really well in his Red Viper armor during his fight with The Mountain, so I don't fault the actor here too much. But once I saw it, it REALLY stuck out to me.

Agreed the "bounty hunter locator fobs" seemed gimmicky too.

Pity they dont stream all the episodes at once like Netflix, so I'm gonna wait till it finishes and then binge it. So for now I'll bow out of this thread.

Watched it last night. WOW! Just wow! They nailed it, it felt right, looked and sounded right too. And interestingly its seemingly set after Endor.

I thought it was very good. Some of the CGI was dodgy (especially for $12 million an episode), but overall I give it 8/10.

I have more faith in Star Wars being told in Television style / TV Episodic Style than in film form.
They have time to tell the story and do research as long as someone riding herd on their writers not going out control.

I think biggest issue they may face is that their inbetween times of big event film/arcs.  That's sort way Battletech Jihad was when Dark Age was happening at same time.

The next episode drops Friday, with a new episode dropping every Friday thereafter.

Only 8 episodes this season it seems.

Only 8 episodes for this season?  I just read up that's 40 minutes per episode, 5 hours and odd minutes of show.  I hope there more episode per season beyond this one unless just initial run of the show.

Watched it.

I loved it.  I don't think I've felt this way about anything Star Wars since Rogue One.  If they can keep this up this will be an epic series.

I found myself wondering why he was walking back when he had to ride there.

Other than that it was a solid episode.
