What if, a "Great Turtle", but less overkill on defense?
« on: 01 December 2024, 08:27:53 »
I always thought, what if, a "Great Turtle", but less overkill on defense, and more offensive orientated?

So, Hollis Incorporated saw the designs for the Great Turtle, utilized their prior experience in building Xanthos, and created the "Xuan Wu", or "Black Tortoise" in ancient Chinese mythology...

After slimming the original design down, the Xuan Wu weights in at 95 tons compared to the Great Turtle's 100 tons. This allowed the powerplant to change into a very common Pitban 285 Standard Fusion Engine.

The designers at Hollis maintained the Torso Cockpit design, but the Endo Steel structure were replaced by a Reinforced Structure, and the signature Harden Armor were replaced by Standard Armor.

For offensive purposes, Hollis imported 3 Clan-tech ER Large Lasers and 3 Clan-tech ER Medium Lasers from Clan Sea Fox merchants, along with a packaged Targeting Computer, and placed them on a 360° Turret structure. A whooping 22 Clan-tech Double Heat Sinks also had to be bartered from the Sea Foxes to fit inside the confined interior.

When I first saw the Angel, I was thinking Stealth Armor... ;)

I wished, but too much heat, not enough crits.

I'd be inclined to shift from reinforced structure to hardened armor.  These give similar effective damage absorption/ton, but given a choice I'd rather take damage on the armor.

Swapping 3x ERLL -> 2x ERPPCs also seems plausibly reasonable since it lowers overheat and adds hreadcapping potential.   You do lose 2 from max range.  Alternatively, 2 ERML-> MPL also saves 6 heat.

Of course you'll have more crits and space at 100 tons.

Leaning Lagrange's way.  If you're buying premium goods from Clanners, you want all the love letters the enemy sends your way to be spent on the armor, not what's underneath.  All the same, this is a much more serious threat to enemy mechs than the original Great Turtle.
