A Bloodhound with a Bloodhound
« on: 07 October 2024, 14:46:06 »
Be honest, when was the last time you thought of the Bloodhound?

(Probably today, when you saw JadeHellbringer's article about it, right?)

So anyway today I abruptly realized that it was a tragedy that we never got a Bloodhound.... using a Bloodhound. So I made one. In addition to rejiggering things a little bit to replace the Beagle probe with the Bloodhound probe, I added a C3i to work better in Blakist formations and configured it better for its supposed anti-insurgency role. The SRM launcher is now a standard model with a two ton ammo bay (so you can have anti-personnel ammo without giving up anti-armor capability), and the ER Small laser is now an ER Flamer. To make up the extra weight, two heatsinks were removed, we got a small cockpit, and I managed to cram ferro fibrous armor on it (part of the reason for the small cockpit)

Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

I suggest light FFA and an XL gyro instead of the standard FFA and small cockpit. Larger risk of gyro damage is preferable to a permanent PSR penalty IMHO. Even saves half a ton!

Incidentally; CASEII? TC?

LFFA instead of standard FFA would save 7 crits.

Had some similar ideas in my own design.  I didn't want to put a C3I on there and also dismissed the idea of including VSP becuase I didn't want what I felt would be a more WoB mech.  I also wanted to mix a little bit of each of the printed variants while including my what I felt was lacking to make it a more comprehence scout and spotterd while still doing the original job of being an anti insurgent mech.

kinda breakign the theme of this thread, in not mounting a bloodhound probe. but i noticed that after 3136 the keystone factory that was the main production site is in Wolf Empire hands. so i decided to play around with a "C" conversion. something the mech strapped wolf empire might put out while they refit the place to produce clan designs and more extensive C refits. so the chassis is pretty much left as is with IS tech (basically using up existing stockpiles of parts), but the weapons have been swapped around.. Clan ER mediums for the lasser, and an ER flamer in the arm for anti-infantry. all tried into a targeting computer to make them even more effective. in an oddity, the missiles replaced with an MML-5 pulled from stockpiles originally used for Thunderbolt -10M production, supplied with a single ton each of SRM and LRM ammo and clan CASE. it's electronic warfare gear has been pulled to mount a watchdog CEWS, giving both active probe and ECM capability. to top it off a supercharger was fitted to give it boosts of extra speed. to fit the supercharger and targeting computer however two DHS had to be removed, leaving it only 12. this reduction in heat dissipation does not notably reduce it's capability in the anti-mech role, particularly in the hands of clan pilots used to running heat curves, but does make it somewhat less effective in an anti-insurgency role. the Wolf Touman however has assigned it primarily to direct combat roles.

edit: and here is a hypothetical "ideal anti-insurgency" design, the kind of thing that might have been the on paper concept before the good idea fairy visited too many times. basically the B1-HND but with standard SRM (allowing for variant ammo), a machinegun for anti-infantry work, and a pair of remote sensor dispensers to augment the mech's ability to detect enemies attempting to move combat forces around covertly. (the remote sensors also give it an advantage the active probe can't in being able to pick up non-armored infantry targets.)

this makes it less of a fast strike unit and more of a patrolling unit. it can lay down a web of sensors around a region that insurgents are believed to be operating in, and either hit any targets that pop up itself or direct its lancemates towards them, depending on the level of enemy forces. one would imagine that someone afflicted with the good idea fairy would decide using the sensor dispensers and monitoring the sensor net would be too complex for most FWL mechwarriors, and pushed for the inclusion of the Streak SRM system to help increase the unit's endurance in the field. resulting in the need to drop the MG and ammo for the ER small laser to make it fit.
