the discussion about the legends version of the rebellion vs the current take on it had me thinking.
IMO the legends version of the rebel alliance was telling a story more akin to the American revolutionary war vs the British, wheras I get the feeling that the new story take on it is more like a modern insurgency.
that's not to say they both weren't true to a certain extent, but the old version the rebel alliance was a combination of day to day folks that had sympathy for the fight against the overarching Imperial government, and if they could get away with it certain nominally loyal groups would stab the empire in the back when possible. The story of the X wings in the Legends canon, was that Incom a nominally loyal Starfighter manufacturer came up with the next generation space superiority fighter, but while the general design specs were set by the Empire, it didn't fit with the emperor's intended Tie fighter arsenal. so he rejected the final design, Rebel sympathisers then helped the rebellion retrieve everything needed to begin mass production of the Xwing design.
in the grand scheme of things the Xwing really isn't all that different from the tie interceptor and or the die defender, they are just different emphasis, for example a tie interceptor is faster, but packs similar firepower to an Xwing, but is more fragile (no shields) and more maneuverable
its why in the alphabet soup that the Rebellion uses the Awing is typically intended for a similar role to the tie interceptor even though it has somewhat less firepower. but its speed, maneuverability and durability are similar.
