Bad choice challenge.

Design a BAD battlemech.  Something just genuinely comprised of 'looks good on paper, performs horribly in the field'.

Worse than your opinion of the SHD-2H Shadowhawk.

Suggested angles: mobility of a heavy with the armor of a light, too much ammo for too few weapons, the wrong heat-sinks for the weapons and movement load, etc. etc.

bonus points for using more advanced tech than is reasonable.

I am thinking something along the lines of using a XXL engine, stealth armor, and single heat sinks.  I give it then a bunch of missile launchers with ammo everywhere with some high heat energy weapons.  Give it TSM and a super charger and if there is room jump jets. 

The mech will be fast and I assume hard to hit and looks to be designed to bring up the heat but with the stealth armor and engine the mech will likely blow itself up.

With this thing I wanted a bad battlemech but not one that would destroy itself. The Super Charger technically works (Hell, alpha strike at full run puts it at +1 heat) but no one (in their right mind) would ever buy one, hence its a bad mech.

In all honesty this version isn't that bad. It only has 10 rounds of shooting, has 3 different ammo locations that could blow it up and is a 3/5 mech with no options beyond 15 hexes, but still got great armour. Fortunately(?) the upgrade has a solution to all those issues:

Of course, I just gave generic splits for the ammo...personally, I'd use 2 tons of the 5 tons of LB ammo for cluster rounds, and I'd use 4 tons of the LAC ammo split evenly between armor-piercing and precision with the rest either all standard rounds, or maybe two tons of standard rounds and 1 ton of flechette (edit: or flak)...

The problem is, I now want to build that in MegaMek and drop it into a congested city map, just for fun ...

Things that I have learnt through clicking too fast on 'Move Done' on MegaMek: Double-check the CF of the building before jumping onto it, check artillery arrival times before standing in the neighbouring hex, and don't run across your own minefield.

How about a mech that is using compact engine, gyro, reinforced structure, 1 ton of hardened armor on the head, and the rest ferro lamellar on a 100 ton mech as much as possible?  Give it some jump jets and maybe the watchdog CEWS along with armoring all important parts of the mech (for example the gyro and engine).  I would also give it a hatchet or 2 with TSM.

The mech would look good since it would have good maneuverability for its size and be the toughest mech around.  At close range it would be a monster but it is difficult for it to get close if anything pays attention.  More importantly I do not think it could hold very much weaponry even clan energy weapons but it would be worth looking into it.

It may never die but will it be an effective mech of war?

Man, this is a hard one; I just can't intentionally make a bad mech. But how about this one?

Somebody got the idea in their head that bigger is better ( hmmm, lyran?  ::) ), so they put the single biggest engine they could find, an engine better suited to dropships and put it in a mech. Add TSM and a retractible blade (an overengined assault mech with a retractible blade but no hands ...   :P ) and there you go.

Found it!  If a MechWarrior just holds down the triggers, it can fire through all five shots for both AC/20s before hitting 30 heat.  Whether its armor will last that long is a completely different question...

Actually... If you strip the lasers, extra SHS, and 8.5 tons of armor from a standard Hunchback you can fit a second AC/20 with the original engine... ;)

I'm thinking over 4M C-Bills is a little rich for Quickscell's blood... you can do an AC/20 at 40 tons with either 5/8/0 or 4/6/4 movement and acceptable (if not maxed) armor for under 3M...  The 5/8/0 model even uses the same engine as the original Hunchback, making it a logical cheap replacement.

The concept was to have as many minimally effective, ammo-dependent weapons and equipment which each an entire ton of ammo devoted to them.  This worked for the machine guns, but maybe not for the ACs.

The Battle Hawk arguably fits in the "Dare to design..." challenge. I've used it to great effect bodyguarding LRM boats.

An exercise in minimalistic design, the Hwatcha is a super light raiding mech with a Catapult-like appearance (reverse joint legs with missile pod arms).  The main use for the mech is to make skirmishing "bombing runs" in small packs, using its rocket launchers to devastate a target, then leave once its payload is "dropped".  The small laser is an atherthought hold out once the rockets have been used.

While some commanders may favor the cheapness of the mech, it has a bad rep amoung mechwarriors.  They see it as not much more than a metal coffin, offering little to ensure the pilot actually gets home.
