Rip-and-tear. Grasshopper "Bastet"
« on: 18 September 2018, 10:30:24 »
Inspired by Lucho's terrifying Sabre Cat.

Edit: I could swear this thing should have a jump range of 7 hexes due to the wing. Is this a SSW bug, or am I not getting something from the rules?

Overview:
The Bastet was a radical modification of a Grasshopper performed by Caph native
Isis Shoka to compete in the Class 6 games on Solaris in the post-Jihad era.
Shoka became class 6 champion early in 3090 with it. She became the champion
with the lightest mass since Kelly Metz took the Class 6 championship in 3067
just prior to the Jihad.

Capabilities:
The Bastet makes good use of the Grasshoppers durability while enhancing its
mobility. Shoka used the engine from a scrapped Lyran Blitzkrieg to push the
speed of the Bastet from the stock Grasshopper's 64 Kph to over 80 Kph. She
also used the engine capacity to add a jump jet.

Normally this would have extended the jump range to 150 meters. Shoka added a
partial wing to the Bastet inceasing the 70-ton 'mech's jump ranger to an
incredible 180 meters.

Shoka completely remade the weapons complement. Gone is the head-mounted LRM
launcher. The large laser has been changed to an extended range model, and been
moved inboard to the torso. One of the medium lasers has been removed, and the
remainder replaced with ER models salvaged from Blakist mechs destroyed during the
liberation of Solaris.

The remaining mass was used for the Bastet's real party piece. Shoka
re-engineered the Grasshopper to use triple-strength myomer. She also replaced
each of the hand actuators with a battle claw.

Battle History:
The frightening combination of jump range and physical attacks made the Bastet
feared in the Open division of the Solaris games. Though it took her over a year
to perfect her use of the Bastet, Shoka eventually made it to the top of the
Class 6 rankings.

The Bastet was terrifying, but not without its faults. The lack of long-ranged
firepower meant that Shoka was often forced to close with her opponent as
quickly as possible. Shoka became skilled in the use of cover, and so she was
largely able to mitigate this.

The Bastet also mounts no weapons capable of firing into its rear arc. This was
ultimately what doomed Shoka and the Bastet, as she was ultimately lured into a
fight with a Liao stealth-equipped customized Thunder in the tunnels beneath
the Ishiyama arena. A pair of shots from behind by the Thunder's
ultra-autocannon was enough to spell the Bastet, and Shoka's doom.

Interesting idea. Claws, Partial Wing, and TSM, you're going to make the Jade Falcons jealous  :D

Another possibility is to leave the 280 engine and add six IJJ. You'd have a slower ground speed, but with a 180m jump it's not so necessary. Another issue is the heat curve. Balancing the heat for the TSM is going to be tricky.

Minor quibbles though. This is an interesting variation of the Grasshopper

Partial wing only nets +1 jump on heavies and assaults.

The thought did cross my mind.

I thought about that, but a) I was inspired by your use of Mechanical Jump Boosters and wanted to play with a wing, and b) I wanted the higher speed when under TSM. I might re-do it though since I forgot about the effectiveness of the wing dripping at higher tonnages.
