"Limited" Refit Challenge

Hello All, 

Based on several other threads about how often you allow customization, I started a little project to design a unit based on stock mechs with random/limited amounts of customization.

I'd like to see if the community can come up with something better than I can so far.


For this challenge you must start with a Stock TRO-3050 Inner Sphere Mech   (Everyone's favorite selection of craptastic upgrades, lol)

Actually, you have to start with,  2 of them,  same chassis or different, doesn't matter.


Each of these mechs gets a different kind of customization limit however.


Refit #1 is restricted to Class-D & only 3 items can be upgraded.


Refit #2 is restricted to Class-B & only 1 item can be upgraded.


In each case you can use Inner Sphere Tech from Total Warfare for the upgrade.


The goal is to get the "Best" out of each of these upgrades.


What tech you choose & what chassis you start with is up to you.



My current "best" options that I can work out at this point are to use the Enforcer-5D for the D/3 upgrade & the Hunchback-5M for the B/1 upgrade.



Refit #1  (D-3)    Enforcer-5D
Upgrade 12 SHS to 10 DHS
Upgrade MPL
Add 1/2 ton of Ferro

Its the best I could come up with given the limits of the # of weapons.    I'm tinkering with a couple other options still, but so far I like the Enforcer for its fit in the lance.




Refit #2   (B-1)     Hunchback-5M
Replace AC/20 + 5 Shots w/ Ultra-10 + 20 Shots

This one was hard to "maximize" because the restriction to a single weapon swap limited how "good" of an upgrade you could do.
I normally avoid a crap chassis like the 5M but in this case it was almost a default to it.
I think this one works well because it fixes the ammo issue, increased Range, and keeps firepower at a similar level.
Gauss would have been a nice option but the B-limit stopped me from changing HS/Armor amounts.




If it helps choices, both of these mechs are in the same lance & the remainder of the lance consists of the CO & XO in 70 & 40 ton mechs respectively.

For the D refit challenge I've picked the Grasshopper 5J. How they managed to screw this one up so thoroughly a mere 9 years after they produced the 5N I have no idea, but three changes are enough to undo it.

1. 22 SHS to 14 DHS, use the freed tonnage to install an ER PPC and an extra medium laser.
2. Rip out the Streak launcher and it's ammo, replace with 3 MLs in the same crit spaces.
3. Remove the AMS and it's ammo and stick a pair more MLs where they were.

The result can fire both the ER guns and walk or fire all the MLs while jumping and be heat neutral. Honestly it's one of the "boring energy boats" that some people complain about when talking about customs, but the 5N was that already so I'm not at all guilty for this one:

As for the B refit it's a lot tougher, I think everyone will be hard pressed to beat the canon Panther 9K to 9KA "downgrade". My entry is for the Hoplite-4D, which had the opposite problem to the Panther; loads of spare heat sinks.

Remove the LBX AC10 and ammo, replace with an ER PPC and 2 MPLs where the gun was and 2 MLs in place of the ammo. An ER PPC with single heat sinks isn't the best, but if you've already go them you might as well use them. Given another D refit I'd have loved to have added jump-jets to match the Grasshoppers movement profile, but such is life:

Gotta kick things off with my favorite, as much of a clunker as it is, so I am going with the RFL-5M for my Option #1 refit! The changes are pretty straightforward and seek to turn the design from a support platform into something that might be able to close with and fight a Clan opponent. The old ultra ACs and their ammo are traded out for a single LB10-X autocannon and two tons of ammo. (I also shifted the large lasers over to one arm, purely for aesthetics. You can keep the left arm laser in place and still fit the new cannon.) The engine was upgraded to a 300 XL to get to the next level of movement and ferro fibrous armor was added in to make the most of the remaining weight that is being thrown into giving this thing some real protection. Now we’ve got something that might be able to make more of a dent in a Clan opponent!

The Option #2 refit was actually much harder. It is so tempting to not only swap a weapon, but then add armor or heat sinks or something similar. As maddening as it was, it made the challenge fun. So, in the spirit of fun, the UM-R63 gets an upgrade! I swapped out the LB 10-X autocannon with something more useful for such a slow ‘Mech: an LRM 20 with two tons of ammo. Now you have a semi-mobile turret with actual ranged punch!

Take a RiFL-5D and stripoff all of the right arm-mounted energy weapons and 4 heat sinks and replace with LB-10X and plenty of ammo and CASE. Add 1.5 tons of armor with weight savings. it's a 5S without the jump jets, basically.

Charger CRG-1K1

Take a stock Charger.
Replace the armor with 9.5 tons FF
Replace the weapons with 3 medium lasers (H, RT, LT)
Add TSM

Two headcappers on the punch table, and something for the Kurita military to do if ancient battlefield salvage is rebuilt or some obscure noble shows up with the family mech; turning it from an absolute lemon into a somewhat useful mech without having to replace the engine. Remember to turn off 8 heat sinks the turn before you get in range with the lasers.

edit - I know that the thread specified 3050, but the 3025 charger is just begging for an upgrade.

Crusader 4BR

Move the ammo out of the center torso into the CASE'd side torsos, and the SSRM2s from the legs into the torso so when it gets up close it can kick and use them at the same time.

The -1k1 charger saw recent action. It chased a Ryoken prime all over the board for a few turns, then punched it's head off.

I really need to catch up on the Classification of items, but for the first one, I would do the Quickdraw-5M...the changes would be as follows:

1) Drop 1 DHS
2) Upgrade SRM-4 (OS) to a standard SRM-4 with a ton of ammo (in the CASE'd torso section)
3) Add a half ton of armor (2 pts each arm, 2 pts CT, 1 pt CT(R) and 1 pt each R/LT would be my preference).

I would also prefer to make all medium lasers face forward...but not sure if that change is allowed for this challenge...

Another one I'd like to do for the first one would be the Shogun-2F...again, not sure if these changes would be allowed for the limits imposed, but here goes:

1) Drop 5 heat sinks, and switch rest to doubles
2) Add two tons LRM ammo, add a pair of medium lasers in each side torso
3) Switch armor to ferro and increase by remaining tonnage (puts you at 259 points of armor to a max of 263).

For the one item change, that's more difficult...maybe this?

Axeman-1N...switch out AC/20 with two tons of ammo for a Gauss Rifle and 1 ton ammo?

Or maybe this?

Trebuchet-7M...switch out NARC with 2 tons ammo for SRM-6 with two tons ammo?
