Picked up the  Rigil Kentarus touring the stars Ebook. And it got me thinking. I do love me some post-Jihad/early Republic fun.
First batch of stuff - TO&E and more stuff to come

Journal of Butch Ballantine
Pollux, Terran Terran Protectorate (former Word of Blake Protectorate)
27 May, 3080

A couple weeks ago I was contemplating... well, looking down the barrel of early retirement.
We’d made it as far as Pollux, desperate to make our way to the newly reopened Mercs’ Star, Galatea, when we pretty much ran out of money.
Defeat, paying our ransoms and then some hefty bribes to keep us ahead of vengeful Regulans had left us just about skint. And worse, unable to pay back some high interest loans graciously extends to us by glorified legbreakers in 5000 C-Bill suits.

So, at Pollux’s nadir jump point in the Terran Republic, or whatever Stone the Liberator is calling his new kingdom, we were ready to take a vote - disband or try and outrun our creditors. Disband was looking like a good option, at least a lot of the crew were feeling that way. Word was going around Stone would trade cash and even citizenship for Mechs or weapons and I was rapidly thinking I was about to loose the whole unit.
And what equipment we had! My Awesome was still missing an arm, Hui’s Jagermech couldn’t move under its own steam. And the Hector was running on electrical tape and prayers. Making our money situation worse, the water pumps has stopped working so no one has showered in a couple days.

About an hour before the vote, we got a call and my XO Sanders patched it through to me in my ready room. I’d been sitting in there in the dark - all the bulbs had blown and we couldn’t afford to replace them, so the tiny cubicle was only lit by the light of the monitor.

Insanely, it was an offer of work. Here, in Stone’s new republic. A mining firm on Rigil Kentarus was having problems with outlaws raiding their facilities. Said the government was not doing anything to stop them.
I’m a pretty mean Four Card Drax player and I do not like to show my hand early. But the elephant in the room was clearly that they were dangling a contract over the head of a lance that could only field two working Mechs backed by an infantry platoon about ready to quit.
But then the corporate type came out and said it, Xstra Mining Holding would cough up enough of an advance to hold off our creditors and pay for a week in Pollux’s Waytani, Inc repair facilities.
After I fronted the Hector’s Mechbay and the gathered unit with that offer, the vote went my way.

So that was it. I don’t think I believe in fate or divine providence. You don’t live through fighting the Clans, getting through the Chaos March and then the Wobbje camps AND then the Jihad believing in much more than yourself.
But as we drifted free of the Pollux orbiting repair yards, bound for the Jumpship. I was starting to reconsider.
Clearly... I’m an idiot.

They came for Townsend a little after midnight. He was sitting in the main room of his tiny apartment in the hideous, brutalist block. All of the off white towers were scheduled for demolition as soon as some sort of centralised government could get working and it showed.
The heat had never been connected, the water flow was erratic and the whole block was about half finished. Outside the road was a mix match of pockmarked, pot hole littered styles. And there wasn’t a working street light in four blocks.

The point man blew the hinges off the cheap door with a rapid volley of shotgun slugs, sending the splintered frame somersaulting through the bare apartment, shedding chunks of chipboard and steel hinge.
Townsend was already behind cover. His enhanced hearing had picked up the body armour clad men on the stair well, long before they’d blow his door.
He’d pulled the table down to cover him as he’d dropped into a sitting position in the far corner.
As the fist gunman entered the room, Townsend took him in - cheap flak vest over black fatigues, decent but old optics - night vision and range finder crammed into one bulky plastic package perched atop a beanie wearing head. The AX-22 was a souped up model, with rail rigs for attachments like a 40mm grenade launcher and obviously “liberated” from the former Blakist armoury.

Locals in other words.

“Amateurs,” Townsend hissed. In a second he was up, slamming one booted foot into the gunman’s knee, he caught the big man as he fell and wrapping one arm around his throat. The other drew his 7mm Thor from its shoulder holster and aimed it at the second man.
His cyber heightened reflexes made both shooters look sluggish and he almost laughed as he covered the second gunman, now frozen in the door way.
“Next time Rahmon wants a meet, he can just send me a message. Not send his goons around,”

Five minutes later, Townsend was being escorted downstairs by those goons. They had allowed him to dress before hurrying him down past locked steel doors. In this day and age on Rigil Kent, you kept your door locked and didn’t look out and involve yourself in other people’s business.

The street was a patchwork of styles, road bumps and pot holes. The scene occasionally illuminated by search lights from the nearby Jade Falcon compound.
But outside Townsend’s apartment tower a Scorpion light tank idled, a Sleipnir APC sat just behind it, it’s back hatched dropped.
Meanwhile, another dozen gunmen stood or crouched nearby.

As two of the men escorted Townsend to the rear of the carrier, there was long rattle of distant gunfire.
“This is the post Word world, eh?” He asked no one.
Three blocks over, a Jade Falcon star of Mechs stood guard over government property. Erstwhile allies of Devlin Stone, still here protecting property.
Here, unpaved streets were populated by gangsters who drove to meetings in light tanks and collected tribute from ordinary citizens.

It wasn’t like any APC Townsend had ever been in. His training brought to mind the stink of grease and unwashed bodies. Instead, this vehicle was clean and sleek. Monitors crowded every available space and a lounge and throw pillows dominated the usual crew set up. On my high tech gadgets had been strewn casually across the bay.

Rahmon Was waiting for him, of course. The fat bastard looked as content as a shark, settled on a lounge chair. Faintly, Townsend felt the APC begin moving.

“You’ve not kept your end of the deal, Townsend,” he said. The giant man hoisted a crystal decanter of something amber and took a slug.
“This makes Me very disappointed. Almost disappointed enough to inform the government of the location of a former ROM officer.
“I’m sure they’d like that. A lot.”

The gangster offered a squinty smile that never met his washed out blue eyes.

Townsend sat. The slight motion of the APC made standing feel uncomfortable.
“Our deal is complete. You wanted equipment... my associates provided. You wanted a safe pirate point to move your merchandise that the Falcons wouldn’t notice... my associates set it up.”

He settled back into the overstuffed chair.

“We have upheld our end of the bargain. Now, we need to re-purpose our resources. Elsewhere.”

The big gangster seemed ready to argue, leaning forward.

“But,” Townsend continued.
“In a week, there will be an opportunity for you. Off world mercs are in bound.”

Rahmon smiles, taking a slug of his drink. “And how does that affect us?”

“Kill them, ensure they don’t mess with our plans and their equipment is yours.”

But the elephant in the room was clearly that they were dangling a contract over the head of a lance that could only field two working Mechs backed by an infantry platoon about ready to quit.
I am sucker for stories like this and a small-scale combat of few Mechs and maybe a few squads of infantry or tanks thrown into the mix.

Looking forward to 'more stuff'!

Thanks guys!

Mia,
I still don’t know why you’re requesting all these ancient docs! As your course supervisor I have to tell you I don’t know how it’s going to help your work on early Republic politics and the early formation policies.
Anyway, here it is. Hope it helps!

Documents provided to Sydney University, Terra, PhD candidate Mia Eckmann under the RAF’s Freedom of Information Act policy, 3129

Force assessment: 3 Royal Windsor Regiment, Windsor Militia 3080
(Currently garrisoning Rigil Kentarus as part of the Archon’s Coalition General Order 111-6)

The 3rd Windsor was loaned by the LAAF to Devlin Stone in mid-3078, serving as one of the many mop up and rear area security forces following in the wake of OPERATION SCOUR as it pushed to a final confrontation with the Word of Blake on Terra. Numerous militia units drawn from House Steiner, Davion, Kurita and even the Clans participated in similar duties, with some assigned on a long term understanding, while others were rotated home.
The 3rd Windsor took up station on Rigil Kentarus in July 3078 after that World was liberated and is expected to remain there.

Rigil Kentarus was liberated by coalition forces following a bitter campaign that saw the defenders use liberal amounts of nuclear and biological weapons. The assault began on 20 May and concluded two weeks later.
However, problems for the coalition didn't stop with the liberation of the planet; the bulk of the allied forces who liberated the planet were Clan units drawn from Clan Ghost Bear, Clan Jade Falcon and Clan Wolf, and the three Clan blocs promptly divided the spoils from the campaign up amongst themselves via Clan trials, ignoring the protests from the non-Clan elements and high command.
After staging their Trials of Possession with Ghost Bears forces and Clan Wolf's Delta Galaxy departed Rigil Kentarus, leaving elements of Clan Jade Falcons' Alpha Galaxy.

Anticipating that the remains of the 7th Falcon Eyrie would eventually return to Clan space or be used by Stone elsewhere, the 3rd Windsor were sent to garrison Rigil Kent.

Morale: While spirits have been buoyed by the recent arrival of families from Steiner space, there’s no denying morals is low. In fact, most troops regard their recent reunions as proof the Archon will leave them on Rigil Kent and this has caused considerable friction among those keen to stay and help raise a new nation and those wanting to return to their Lyran homes.

This is has only been  exasperated By having to work with their erstwhile allies - not only the Falcon cluster, but the battalion of DCMS military police who arrived on world about the same time.
There’s a grudging commitment to work together between the Kuritan and Steiner troops, while both sides can barely contain their disdain for the Clansmen.

Readiness: The 3rd remains well equipped and relatively well motivated, despite its morale problems, which is a testate to strong leadership and a recognition that people of Rigil Kent desperately need them.
The militia unit has already shown its mettle in several clashes with on world insurgents and local bandits and while its not suited for crowd control (where the Kuritans have shined), the unit have so far avoided mass bloodshed or a PR disaster when dealing with recent food riots.

Composition: The 3rd Windsor is primarily equipped as a “jaeger” light infantry regiment and on its home World was employed as an alpine force, equipped to undertake long marches in cold conditions, scale Windsor’s imposing mountains and conduct deep penetration attacks in adverse weather.
Realising there was little cause for the unit’s specialisation, command set about mechanising as much of the regiment as possible upon reaching its garrison post. As of 3080, all headquarters units and the first company of each battalion has been totally mechanised, using a mix of Lyran and salvaged Blakist vehicles. The Beast Riot Vehicle, formerly a mainstay of WoB Protectorate Militia forces has proved especially popular.
Mechanising has allowed the 3rd to operate a variety of field guns and towed artillery for the first time, bulking out its single battery of integrated Sniper artillery guns.
The 3rd’s third battalion is unique in that it has been designated a Fallschirmjägerbataillon - paratroopers who can be quickly transported by fixed wing aircraft and dropped from the air. While most mainline LAAF infantrymen go through at least some parachute training, few militia troops get the chance, and the third battalion’s candidates undertake a lengthy jump course before going on a gruelling selection course that involves survival training and tactical exercises.
Most of these paratroopers will go onto to cross train with mainline LAAF special forces or commando units and it’s not often for its best and brightest to be poached, such as the case of Colonel Shane Welsch, who previously commanded the 3rd Skye Commando Regiment during the FedCom Civil War.
The battalion’s first company is now trialling a variety of light vehicles to determine if they could be transported by air and dropped.

Complementing the 3rd is the battalion of LAAF combat engineers. Though combat engineers have a separate reporting structure in the Lyran military, Engineers will integrate with any regular unit to get the job done. Currently, this oversized battalion made up of unexplored ordinance technicians, bridge builders, construction crews and specialists, is tasked with rebuilding Rigil Kent.
The sappers have come under attack from insurgent forces several times and now rarely deploy with out an escort from the 3rd.

Additionally, while totally seperate from their Lyran counterparts, the 19th Benjamin Auxiliary under Chu-Sa Hohiro Takeda has proved adapt at keeping the peace in the bombed out and gutted cityscapes of Rigil Kent.

Leadership: Colonel Maximilian Brandt commands the 3rd and is a dedicated and hard working officer who has probably kept the unit together on Rigil Kent by sheer force of will.
Enlisting in the AFFC just prior to the Clan Invasion, Brandt served as an infantry platoon and company commander and battalion XO with the 9th FedCom RCT and was repeatedly decorated for bravery. However in the wake of the FedCom’s fracture he soon realised he’d been too vocal in his support for Victor and by 3059 had been transferred through a series of backwater duty stations and assignments. A year later, he accepted a reserve commission in his wife’s home world of Windsor and settled down to run a sporting goods store, catering to those seeking to ski and hike in Windsor’s beautiful alpine regions.
While content to stay a reservist, he was finally lured back into full time duty as the Civil War heated up, a champion skier and dedicated hiker and mountain climber, the father of four passed the gruelling paratroop selection course at 35, despite being the oldest candidate in the class, and took over the battalion.
In 3076, Colonel Brandt volunteered his regiment for an off world posting as part of the push on Terra. Since arriving on Rigil Kentares, the wiry Lyran has tried to build a rapport with his Kuritan and Clan counterparts, with mixed results - although telling the Jade Falcon officers he fought on Twycross alongside Kai Allard-Liao did a lot to build respect.

Hauptmann-Kommandant Georgia Bradford-Rothe is a radically different kind of officer, compared to her commander.
This beautiful blonde is more at home at monied gatherings or regal balls and her name and her family’s distant relation to the Duke of Coventry has proved useful in gaining access to both.
It also helped this would be “social general” gain her rank at a young age. That’s not to say Bradford-Rothe is a poor soldier - she is incredibly fit from a lifetime of competitive downhill skiing and is tactically astute... but she just finds it all such a bore. While working her way higher up the ranks of the militia suited her as a distraction, she was less than thrilled to be posted off world to a war zone where no one had time for parties or clubbing. Still, she knows coming home with a few medals won’t hurt her reputation.
Bradford-Rothe leads the 1st Battalion and is the third in command after the XO Lt Colonel Waters

Leutnant Herman Schneider is unique in the Lyran army in that there’s little chance of him being promoted, and he’s fine with that. A career infantryman who enlisted at 16 in 3049, Schneider has bounced up and down the enlisted ranks and through units since then. He’s been a staff sergeant major in frontline outfits on the Clan border and he’s been a corporal with the-then mostly ceremonial 1st Royal Guards on Tharkad itself. But a penchant for drink, brawling and the company of women likely to give you a variety of social diseases have seen him bounced around repeatedly.
During SCOUR, Schneider was serving with the 23rd Arcturus Guards during the assault on the Tokyo Castle Brian. Already badly wounded in both legs, he figured he was dead anyway when a Blakist grenade landed in the bunker he squad was holding, throwing himself on it.
Somehow, Schneider survived and was promoted to Leutnant - usually a stepping stone for academy graduates before being commissioned - but a lengthy hospital stay and rehab on Terra meant he was left behind when his comrades rotated home.
He was assigned to the 3rd as it moved to take up its new home but his superiors are unsure what to do with the old warhorse who holds an unusual rank. He’s assigned as Bradford-Rothe‘s driver for now, in the hope he can impart some wisdom on her.

The Windsor Militia's tasks include guarding the world's last Pizza Hut

(Sorry, that was stupidly in-jokey. Couldn't help it)

Ahem. Interested to see where this is going, but nice to see a profile on a conventional/planetary unit for once. They rarely get much love.

Orbit above Rigil Kentarus
3 June 3080

Voice one (FedSuns twang, male): I’m assuming those alarms aren’t good news.
Voice two (Female, husky): You’d be correct, Butch. We’re getting pinged something fierce.

The blaring alarms die off.

Voice two: We’re being hailed.

Voice one: Put it through on the... big screen.

Voice two: You’re still not getting the hang of things up here on the bridge, are you?

Voice three (haughty male): Attention, unknown Leopard-class Dropship, this is Star Captain Aton Von Jankmon of Clan Jade Falcon’s 7th Eyrie Cluster. You are now being scanned, stand by to be boarded and searched for contraband.

Voice two: They’re deploying fighters... and looks like a shuttle.

Voice one: Falcons... great.

Now I understand why those Falcons were so touchy. And so keen to search our ship. This place is madness, pure madness. A low key insurgency, that’s not as low key as our employers made it sound and a whole battlefield of salvage inviting bandits, pirates and anyone else hankering for high end military grade hardware, sitting out there in the wake of OPERATION SCOUR.
We got talking to one of independent captains out here as we burned in. She said the Clanners divided up what they needed after beating the Word defenders but let most of it to rot. The Falcons still here are apparently too snooty to take it, despite being massively depleted.

Typical. This started complicated. And it’s just got more complicated. We hadn’t even broke atmo when the central government on Rigil Kent hailed us. Things have got very bad in the capital and they’re briefly nationalising us to clear the spaceport. I’ve got no idea what we’re wading into.

Later...

Well, good of them to feed us intel half an hour before we touch down. There’s a convoy of vehicles carrying much needed supplies - food, clean water, medical supplies and most importantly, portable air scrubbers - into the capital. But satellites have spotted a lance or so of bandits Emerging from the old battlefields and bearing down on the convoy.
We’re going to play escort.
The militia only has a scratch force available, so we’ll do the heavy lifting. Meanwhile, the Jade Falcons are content to sit on another continent.
Better saddle up!

Hi guys, apologies for the delay in the new instalments. But, some of the content just didn’t feel appropriate in the wake of the things that are happening across the US. I thought about it a lot before posting. I guess, what I’m trying to say is that none of the below is intended to mimic, detract from or attack the Black Lives Matters protests or their message. Below is some words about big stompy robots, nothing else.
Anyway....

Six Delta: Church Street clear, moving down Danks. Nothing on Danks.

Three Delta: Zero Delta, this is Three, we got movement! Lots of movement!

Zero Delta: Calm down, Three. Tell us what you see?

Three: On Sun... lots of host... do...

Zero: Say again, Three Delta. Say again your last? Come on, kid, tell me what’s happening.

Three: -ounded! The LT’s down, lots of hostile. They.... oh fu...

Zero: Three Delta, please respond.

Six Delta: Zero, this is Six. I see ‘em! Lots of irregulars moving on Three’s position, most of them armed, others burning stuff or trashing buildings. There’s... Jesus, there’s a lot of them.

Journal of Butch Ballantine

I’d see the devastation of the city as we made our final burn in. First from the bridge and then when I strapped into my Awesome, via a feed to my secondary monitor.
We were spiralling down on the drop port, maybe 10 klicks out of the city. The whole facility was new, built by the Lyran engineers when they took over garrison duties: Clusters of pre-fab and temporary buildings and big open launch pads.
It was new, but built in the grave of the old port - the Word had lured in a whole Ghost Bear cluster and then unleashed nuclear hell, glassing the port and killing all the Clanners. Rumour had it, they’d also killed themselves too - but no one seemed to know if it was on accident or purpose.

The main highway and Maglev tracks ran due east to the city centre. Out that way I caught a glimpse of gleaming new towers and spires as the construction efforts began. The camera hadn’t shown it, but I knew they were surrounded by acres of ugly, brutalist mazes, hastily thrown together apartment towers and damaged buildings that had somehow survived liberation.

And between those buildings and the space port? Those two islands of rebirth?
Death. Decay. Ruins. The left overs of the brutal nuclear holocaust and carpet bombing involved in liberation.
I could see at least three fires burning in that no man’s land as we disembarked. Dark, oily smoke reaching into the night sky. Militia VTOLs buzzed over the rows of gutted buildings and razed ground, spotlights darting among the rubble.
There was the occasional burst of gunfire or rattle of single shots, proving people actually lived out there.
Some of those residents were waiting for us at the main gate as we approached. While, the gateway was well fortified by militia infantry, a sudden flood of humanity emerged from the cluster of nearby lean tos and shacks, rushing them as the gates opened.

I hear a volley of shots but the ragged crowd kept coming - until they saw us. Four gigantic metal forms moving toward them, saw through crowd disperse back to their makeshift camp. Or at least get out of the way, I felt several rocks bounce impotently off my armour and could hear the guards screaming for the reforming crowds to disperse as we moved out.

It was only then did I learn, we were flying solo for this one.

Warhorse One: Command, this is Warhorse, we have departed the space port and we’re heading north east to link up with the convoy. Where can we expect to meet our support.

Command: That’s a negative on support, Ballantine. Our forces are tied up across the city. We have mass riots in effect and we’re taking casualties.

Warhorse: So, we’re supposed to ride out and rescue this convoy by ourselves?

Command: That’s a Roger, Warhorse. Out.

GAME SETUP
Recommended Terrain: Light Urban or Heavy Urban (see p. 263, TW) Set up two mapsheets with their short edges adjoining.
To represent the damage done to the city during the liberation and subsequent chaos, replace all building hexes as follows: Light and Medium buildings become Rubble hexes, Heavy buildings become Ultra Rubble hexes (see p. 39, TO), and Hardened buildings become Light buildings.
The Defender selects one edge of the map to be his or her home map edge; the Attacker’s home edge is the opposite end of the map. The Attacker sets up his forces before the start of play while the Defender’s forces enter the map from their home edge on Turn 1.

Attacker: Ballantine’s Lance

AWS-8T Awesome Butch - Butch Ballantine
JM6-S Jagermech - Heston Hui
ENF-5D Enforcer - Beatrix Montaigne
GRF-1DS Griffin - Castro Wilson
Ballantine’s lance start at their map edge on turn three.

Additionally, the lance is escorting a convoy of Burro II Super Heavy Cargo Trucks. To determine the size of the convoy, roll 1d6 plus 1.
For every two trucks, the defender receives one Motorized MG infantry platoon.

The convoy and any attached infantry start at least two hexes from their map edge and must then begin to move towards the opposite edge.

Defender: the defender’s forces consist of the following, two Goblin Infantry Support Vehicles and
Motorized Heavy Infantry (see p. 209, Technical Readout: 3085). For every one convoy vehicle deployed by the Attacker, the Defender may field one infantry platoon.

Plus:

Turkina C
This unit receives 1 point of damage for every 5 tons of mass, distributed randomly in 5-point (or fraction thereof) groups. Do not roll critical hits, even if internal structure is damage

Gurkha
This unit receives 3 points of damage for every 5 tons of mass, distributed randomly in 5-point (or fraction thereof) groups. Determine one critical hit to a random location, as well as any possible critical hits suffered from internal structure damage. Disregard any hits that would immobilize or destroy the unit, including cockpit/ crew killed hits, ammunition hits, and destroyed motive systems/ engines and gyros.

Initiate
This unit receives 1 point of damage for every 5 tons of mass, distributed randomly in 5-point (or fraction thereof) groups. Do not roll critical hits, even if internal structure is damage

The Attacker sets up his or her units in hidden positions on the map before the first turn.

Optional Bonuses:
+100 Artillery (Defender only): The Attacker may call on four Thumper barrages (one per turn); the gun is two turns away (see p. 179, TO).
+200 Surprised!: The Defender has a -2 to his or her Initiative roll for the first four Turns.
+200 Dusk/Dawn: Use the Dusk/Dawn rules (see p. 58, TO).

OBJECTIVES
1. All mine! (Attacker). The Attacker captures one or more of the convoy’s transport trucks. If any Attacker unit enters the hex occupied by a truck, that truck may not move out of the hex as long as the enemy unit is there. Capture is achieved by an Attacker infantry or vehicle unit spending one Turn in the same hex as a truck without engaging in combat with any other unit. Once this has been achieved, the now-captured truck will attempt to retreat off the Defender’s home edge. The Defender can recapture a truck using the same procedure. (Reward: 75 each)

2. Gotta go! (Defender). The Defender moves one or more of the convoy’s transport trucks off the Attacker’s home edge. (Reward: 100 each)

3. Kill ‘em! Cripple or destroy at least 75% of the enemy’s combat forces. (Reward: 300)

Both sides are operating under Forced Withdrawal rules (see p. 258, TW), unless negated by special unit rules (see pp. 6-7).

AWS-8T Awesome Butch: Ballantine’s Awesome started life as a stock 8T, manufactured on Savannah in 3001. Presumably making its way into Word of Blake hands via a defecting FWL warrior, Ballantine captured it on Scituate in 3072, while a member of the Devlin Stone’s nascent revolution. Ballantine kept the assault Mech throughout his service with Stone’s Lament and later Liberators and managed to take it with him when he mustered out following the liberation of Terra.
To replace damaged equipment, he swapped out both large lasers for standard PPCs, downgrading one of the LRM-15 racks to a 10. The head mounted small laser is upgraded to small pulse laser at the expense of half a tonne of armour.

The Awesome has the following quirks: Command BattleMech, Accurate Weapon (LRM-15) and Non-Standard Parts.

You have a quirk accurate weapon LRM-15, but you no longer have the 15 as it was replaced by a 10.
How does that work.
I wish I could get a good grip on reality, then I would choke it.

It’s still got one - the 8T mounts TWO LRM-15s. I swapped one out for a 10 rack to make more room. The remaining 15 launcher is still there.
The 8T mounts an LRM launcher in either torso, the left launcher only was swapped

Oily smoke, lazily wafted into the night’s sky as Townsend lowered his range finding binoculars. From his perch, atop of of the few still standing high rise buildings on the West Side, Townsend had watched the whole bitter scene.
Using the field glasses to scan again, he zoomed in on the row of twisted and burning vehicles on the city’s edge.
It was supposed to be easy - he’d fed all the relevant data to Rahmon‘s men and the gangster’s scratch force had come boiling out of the gutted buildings, ready to seize the convoy.
It’d been easy until those bloody mercs had shown up.

He shifted his view to where the mercenary Mechs and their convoy were moving towards the space port, now partially screened by a row of low,  gutted buildings.

First, the huge Awesome had ripped into the armour - it’s PPCs and seeming wall of LRMs tearing Rahmon’s tanks apart. Then the lighter merc machines had rushed forward, covering the convoy as they battled it out with the Gurkha and Initiate. For a second, Townsend thought the criminal troops had it, until that bloody Awesome waded in again.
Now two of Rahmon’s Mechs lay face down in the rubble and the big Turkina had been forced to flee.

And what had it netted him? Nothing! One supply truck crippled, but the merc Jagermech had seen to it - waiting for the crew to jump out, it had lit the truck up, ensuring no one got its cargo.

Townsend tore off his filter mask with a feral snarl as he stepped back inside the roof top office. Furniture and equipment was strewn about the place - only the items too bulky or Damaged to bother looting - and he had to step carefully as he approached the main stairwell.

With that failure, it was probably time he made himself scarce for a while.

Journal of Butch Ballantine

We did it. And all at the cost of just one truck. The militia boys looked a cross between eternally grateful and sheepish to the point of embarrassment when we rolled back in.
Just to prove there’s no rest for the wicked, as soon as we got back our actual employers contacted us. We’ll be providing close security for their facilities on Ripen Minor. So, we’ll be lifting off for the moon in a couple hours.

ATT: Loremaster Brian Pryde
FROM: S/CPT Darius

Loremaster,
As per your recent request for further information on the newly arrived mercenaries involved in the recent convoy attack, I tasked our Watch operatives with digging up more data.
I have now compiled the following report.

I will note, Loremaster. This report took considerable time and effort to compile, highlighting how thin our Watch resources are spread. Perhaps, if I could be assigned additional help - even a handful of Freebirths?

Image shows a head and shoulders snap shot of a darkly handsome man, jet black hair pulled into a tight pony tail and sporting a full, thick beard. Both are lightly streaked with white and his skin is darkly tanned, suggesting long periods on hot worlds.
A thin scar traces down from the right side of his forehead, around the eye to mar his cheek.

Bruce “Butch” Ballantine - Loremaster, I had to spend considerable effort to discover this mercenary’s real first name, he seems determined to go solely by “Butch” - is a FedSuns native of New Aragon and served with that world’s Borderers regiment when it took part in Operation Bulldog.
After helping end the sickness that was Clan Smoke Jaguar, Ballantine rotated home but soon became disgruntled with the state of his nation as the FedCom Civil War broke out and resigned his commission.

The next word I discovered about Ballantine was his work as a gun for hire in the so-called Chaos March, a series of news reports put him on Hsien, Epslion Indi, Liberty and Arboris, typically leading lance or Demi-Company sized units. In 3066, he seems to have joined the Always Faithful mercenary regiment on Hsien.

This is was poor timing, it seems, as the locally employed Faithful were destroyed by the Word of Blake-backed Hsien Hotheads as part of the annexation of that planet.

It’s years before I could find any sign of Ballantine after that, until he emerged as a member of Stone’s Lament during the formation of the Kittery Prefecture. Despite being his allies, Devlin Stone seems reluctant to share any details about those who broke out of the Word of Blake camps with him and formed the original Lament. As such, we have little concrete information on Ballantine, except that he was detached to the still forming Stone’s Liberators in mid-3077 to make up combat losses.

We know Ballantine fought on Terra and Mars, but there’s little information to hand on why a decorated member of Stone’s personal command would shun the limelight and leave abruptly in 3079.

Following his departure, Ballantine eked our a meagre living as a mercenary in the fractured former FWL until now.

The image shifts to show a blurry black and white shot of the Rigil Kent star port. An Awesome can be seen walking across the concrete apron. Behind it, a line of light vehicles are moving down the extended ramp of a Leopard-class Dropship.

While operation on the edge of Free Worlds League space, Ballantine managed to recruit his current crew - a full Mech lance, supported by approximately a platoon of infantry, along with support elements.
