Our TV is at last broadcasting "The Pacific" on a non paying channel. I must say, I'm disappointed. I even nearly dropped out during the Melbourne episode, but hanged on. Right now, we've just had the battle of Peleliu, and I'm still somewhat disappointed. I just can't get attached to the various characters, despite the lengthy attempts to give them some psychological depth. It can be that the series is too explicit on that matter : Band of Brothers managed to carve well detaiiled characters without resorting to that...
I'm also not that happy with the combat scenes : they're certainly extremely violent (some details are especially gruesome), but -that's the wargamer speaking I guess -, they do not seem to make any tactical sense like in Band of Brothers. Except for the mad dash across Peleliu's airstrip, that's always the same machine-gunning at close quarters. I've rewatched with a lot of pleasure "Band of Brothers", I'm not sure that, after watching the last 3 episodes next sunday, I'll give "The Pacific" another look.
